I remember being really little I remember Richard straker he had lovely way a very kind gentle friendly voice since I was little I've have learning difficulties and anxiety his voice make me feel calm I would like to say thankyou you are a star ⭐
AKA The Big Dick! Decent bloke. A gentleman from a different era - when stuff like this mattered. Though I feel a little bit hypocritical as I was one of the 2nd gen of announcers that 'moved in' at the end of the 80s into the early 90's. Then EVERYTHING CHANGED forever...
I did a session with David Miles in 2000 as I wanted to get the BBC Voice . He was charming . My dad was a broadcaster for the World Service for 30 years so it was all rather nostalgic.
Richard Straker was a superb announcer. He had a very soothing and reassuring style with exactly the right pace. The current team of BBC announcers lack sophistication and charm and are feeble by comparison.
Fast forward to the present day and ITV don't even bother and pre-record all their links which i think personally just removes the magic out of continuity announcing. Then and now, We've seen during breakdowns that there is somebody there to take us through some music apologizing along the way before we return to the programme and that's the only thing done live by ITV continuity. UTV's Julian Simmons recently talked about moving from in-vision to out-of-vision continuity recently saying that it's all the done 'the ITV way...' Here's that interview ruclips.net/video/6KgdOZVTMSo/видео.html
This caused so much anger on the other side of the glass. He tried to imply that he did everything which was only true during Schools and OU. THey used to call him Dick Stroker
Why are the mixers round like that and not just flat? whats the point of that? like ive seen loads of mixers that are flat, seems like added cost and effort whats that for?
They're called quadrant faders, and they replaced rotary knobs in the 60s, before the flat linear faders were invented sometime in the early 70s. I guess the engineering department of the BBC just liked to stick with what they knew, that vision mixer looks like it was a good 10 years old in 1987!
And Strangley when you operate those faders you can till by the 'feel' exactly how far up or down you are while looking at the picture monitor. Very useful at times!!

I arrived at the end of the 90's and was still in awe at people like Andy Cartlidge and Malcolm G-E

Him and Bruce Hamil provided the best bbc announcers

So there wasn't a proper close to that particular edition of Open Air then?
Richard Straker is the name of one of the vampires in Stephen King's book Salem's Lot.
Incorrect. He was a human servant.
