  • Of course there are some extremely successful college dropout who are going to tell us college isn't worth the investment. And for some of us, that might be true. But major decisions like whether or not to seek a college education can't be boiled down to a simple binary.

    You are absolutely right Simon. As an individual who is going back to college again for further study, I can completely relate and understand what you are trying to say. In a real world sometime you are too scared to ask questions, give your opinions specially at work when you are somewhere at the bottom of the chain. You are too scared of peoples judgement. After a long break I’m going back to college again as I am not happy where I was. Just after a months in college, I feel like I am improving on these things and I can truely express myself infront of tutors, ask questions fearlessly without being judged. I am learning and practicing some practical stuffs that you really need once you are in real world.

    Simon is awesome as usual and makes one ponder. The question of our times is what is the right age for college ? And the question before this one is; have we made formal education extend into too many years stealing the time to actually implement skills and perform ? Reminds me of the gurukul system of Indian education, which was shorter and trade (skill) focused. Then you may continue to specialize and upskill.

      Word. It's pretty much the only reason I liked college, and the only reason I'd consider going back. Really regret listening and trusting people like my father for so many reasons-boomers are clueless. Grew up teaching myself advanced stuff on my own while also having tremendous social anxiety, and people like him never really advised me about anything, and wouldn't answer when asked. He has a weird inferiority complex he projects on me I suppose.
      After all the things I've said online at this point-and I didn't really have a choice anyway, plus the vast majority of it is true/accurate, particularly after a certain point-yeah, I'm realizing it's offensive to me that people put you through this crap while you live out a fucked up Ender's Game scenario.
      Was always uncomfortable with the party culture, though my roommates were cool about that stuff and it was good times just drinking and playing games, for the most part. Shame they never reply when I reach out, but oh well.

    • @seankelly8906
      @seankelly8906 2 года назад

      @@sallysun2646 your remark here seems a bit too absolutist though. You'll also meet highly influential people nearly anywhere, whether you go to college or even graduate high school, when the conditions are right I figure.
      I'm sure I've tried to pretend otherwise (just like with some other things about my childhood) because I figure it's the done thing for men, especially straight men, that we're supposed to act like we slay the p in college and it was all just a raucous time of fun, (and some parts definitely were, I'll admit. But especially back then, and maybe even more now despite how I share a lot more online and in person, everyone gets the wrong idea. Eg if I listen to Elliot Smith's "pictures of me," I'm actually thinking about it mostly abstractly. Most of the songs whoever's telepathically transmitting to me are actually extremely confusing and depressing to me if I'm being honest, and I can't tell wtf they're really trying to say.) but none of that was really true for me. Emotionally, it was very depressing, even though I hadn't gotten into harder drugs yet. (And contrary to what people say, at least for me, I've only periodically used opioids, usually during transition periods, like senior year of high school when my mom yelled at me literally every day to ask out this one girl I knew since I was maybe 7, whom I liked despite that bullshit. But that causes one-itis and really made college tough. Especially since I see she has been scheming with my mother on the whole gay agenda bullshit. Figured that out thanks to some new people I've met-always wondered why certain people left my FB long before I said much of anything controversial. Everyone goes away in the end.)
      But I still busted my ass, learning things well above the level most would, independently, because I tried talking to the advisors to challenge me more, doing it the right way, and it was futile. I became very withdrawn, but in terms of academic and scientific, intellectual development, it was a great time. Roommates were very strange to be especially during my senior year, but look I was actually happy being in my room, till my senior year anyway, (and hanging out with certain friends in particular, who yeah to this day, it's complicated, due to maybe relatively trivial things that I still have a lot of guilt over, but which everyone has apparently talked about without ever talking with ME about them...) and so what if over time I skimmed a decent amount of alcohol from their abnormally replete liquor cabinet, while later getting into watching TV? That mostly happened senior year when the new roommates, the guy in particular, were really strange. It's like the gay agenda stopped or let up for a while, after freshman year, but picked up again with this very large and frankly scary guy being unduly aggressive towards me.
      So yeah overall I'm actually fine with not seeing many of this people today. A few (some of whom I'm surprised are still FB friends, quietly observing I guess) I've been meaning to reach out to but yeah, I remember pretty much everything, and there have been many confusing patterns.

    • @seankelly8906
      @seankelly8906 2 года назад

      @@sallysun2646 overall, college is kind of a waste of money. But then everyone loves to call me ecssssentric, my whole life, when I've known who I am and was the whole time.
      Might be exaggerating a little, (and being a loner, I don't even know how to compare myself to others much anymore) but when I'm in a good place mentally, I can learn like maybe 2 years of graduate work experience (with focus usually on more depth than breadth; why I'm not a big fan of certain fields like CS, where resources primarily neglect the former, and are just bad about the latter) in as many months.
      I've met apparently very bright people who possibly seem very worried about not having gone to college, (but I can't tell what they're really anxious about, which is what really worries me, as I don't know but it seems like I contributed somehow. Have a lot of theories, but yeah. Don't necessarily assume I'm interested in them romantically either; probably said too much identifying info here but oh well, been doing that for a while.) but I don't know, sometimes those with the most potential have unusual paths in life. I used to (still kinda do lol) beat myself up about never feeling like I'd done enough, wasting time watching even just an hour or two of TV, thinking I was losing my mind due to complex factors, honestly related mostly to trauma from my parents, older brother, that girl I mentioned, etc. But obviously I wouldn't be thinking this much about everything all of the time (I've got a lot of questions about that song...) were that the case. I can see when others might be similar.
      Reminds me of how some friends played YOLO by The Strokes a lot. At this point I figure screw it, I might just learn something new like playing the drums. I'm done with letting my parents and others just drive me into the ground with burnout. How the hell would they have not realized I'd certainly become suicidal joining the military, especially at this point? (Frankly I think they do know, as recent events suggest they are intentionally trying to push me to and probably off the edge. Just have the balls to admit it though. A lot more I could say, but I'm done fraternizing with enemies. There are only a few I think I can trust at this point.)

    I think college is the foundation of education. The basics, English maths, science. You need those basic items. University in the UK is the greatest achievement, because you are on your own. No hand holding. You can go to lectures, or don't. Sink or Swim. That's why most degrees are referred to as a Discipline. That's what it teaches you. Responsibility, discipline and achievement. I also think that is why a lot of companies want a university degree as a key requirement for any role. On the other hand, yes if you are naturally entrepreneurial, then you would be hustling by that age anyway so it doesn't matter.

      @@amyrenee1361 parental influence is important too. Simon never mentioned it, but as a parent myself, and a professional in my field, I would seek to recognise where my children's strengths lie and encourage them to follow a path which would suit their natural strengths. I think education is a great foundation, but also agree that too much academia is sometimes detrimental to one's wallet and life.

    The financial burden in some countries is such a pity - it causes the decision to be made, at least in part, on monetary concerns. Which in turn equates to return on "investment". And so the less applied courses of study start to fall by the wayside.

    What is one of the problems with studying in some high schools and universities is the limit and the options for what to choose as a profession, and you find yourself choosing it not necessarily because you love studying this class but because there are no other options. you need to study and get university degrees to be valued and appreciated by society and get a decent salary. it causes you to lose money and be stuck for many years with this profession that you don't love until you realize you need a change. Internet is the best source to learn in today's world. There are so many successful people on RUclips like you(simon), sadhguru, tom bilyeu, tony robbins.
    I also feel there is so much negativity in schools and colleges. They make you so stressed about things that are useless and i don't like it. Life is too short to waste time in things that don't grow you, serve you and make you happy.
    So im not going to college and im happy :D

    The "Great Resignation", where people are reassessing what they really want from work and switching to jobs which align much more with their values, is also causing people to reevaluate their opinions of college. A degree isn't strictly necessary to succeed in life, and in many cases the only reason to get a degree is to satisfy the arbitrary requirement for one that employers use as a filter to lower application numbers. That can be sidestepped in a number of ways, including becoming self-employed.

    The answer is rather simple: What kind of profession do you want to have and does that profession REQUIRES you to go to college?"
    If you want to be a doctor you might probably have to.
    Other stuff, you'll need to educate yourself properly ... plenty of that going around. And beyond college, you need to learn every day, both for professional and personal reasons.
    That's why I write a 'wisdom' manually in a book everyday. What did i learn on this day. And for today, it will be about college as written above I think

    I hated college after 2 classes and never went back (I have ADHD). I did 3 years of electronics in Tech School during high school and that led me into job after job. I wound up as a medical service engineer and later a technical consultant and made a healthy 6 figure salary WITHOUT a degree. I also had a free company car for almost 20 years. I started investing in my 20's and retired very comfortably at 55. I think college only teaches you the data you need for a job, but zero social, interpersonal or behavioral skills. And most degrees don't even prepare you financially for the real world. The education system is, was and will continue to be broken and inefficient, sad to say.

    Half of things you just mentioned are taught in classical education to highschoolers.
    so 60% of what you get out of college you could get in most private schools, or homeschooled with a classical curriculum.
    College is literally only beneficial for those who need a degree to do the job they see their abilities playing out the best in.
    Had public school not forgone all the ways that helps teens decipher what their innate abilities are.. then maybe we would have less kids dropping out.. not finishing.. switching half way etc.
    The education system in our country is just shameful.
