8:30 I've never seen a CFI do this, and I love it- not simply leaving it in an unusual attitude, but returning to wings-level to show how wrong the signals are. I mean, if the airplane is twisted on three axes it's easy to ignore the disorientation, but if you are disoriented in level flight it's obvious something is wrong.
One of my favourite parts of flight training was unusual attitudes. Looking forward to when I do aerobatics and the unusual attitudes associated
Nice!
@jacbob5824 I was a airborne. So it was a lot fun doing them.
Absolutely love my flying eyes. We mainly wear the Bose A20s in the military, flying heavies. Crazy durable, look good, and feel even better!
Sweet! I swear by my Flying Eyes!
Right now I'm studying for my CFI check ride, and I'm diving heavily into the FOI. I just finished reading about how as an instructor, you should hold every student to the standards in the ACS, but that you have to view each student individually because no one person is alike, and no one person learns the same way. It's so cool to see that in the real world. I never really struggled with Unusual Attitudes, but Jonathan did ever so slightly, relying on his body signals, and I'm sure this is a common error that PPL students make. This video just shows how crucial the FOI's are in Flight Instruction. Great video as always!
The body signals can be quite sensitive, for sensitive pilots. For me it was a struggle to get used to unusual attitudes practices as I was feeling stomach sick 🤢 after each maneuver ! But! It just took more practice to automate the process and then practice more.
This is a great lesson. I was doing VFR with a now airline buddy and we were flying back from Tampa to Kissimmee in my plane at night. We ran into some clouds at 4k ft. Eyes immediately went inside the cockpit until we were out again but for that minute or two we were in some big clouds with no outward visibility. You just never know honestly. Taking off at night into the dark abyss is like this as well. Taking off in Venice towards the water is black.... nothing to see around you. Good video here!
In the blue - power through.
In the brown - power down. I’ve said it every check ride. Tells the DPE you know what you’re doing even though your power changes may not be as extreme as full power or power idle.
Interestingly enough. I did not have to learn this for my Sport certificate. I learned it on my own though. BTW: I passed my Sport about 3 weeks ago.
Love my Flying Eyes. Unusual attitude recovery, not so much. Unusual attitude recovery on partial panel/gyro fail even less.
EDIT: Good news, everyone! Flying Eyes support confirmed to me that they're actively working on foggles.
Wish I could hire you as my instructor I feel like I would learn so much from you.
In Europe this kind of training is not required for a PPL but I wish it were. We did a little bit of actual IMC and separately unusual attitudes but not simulated IMC and unusual attitudes combined.
wish I was a younger person. I worked for the the Air Force and NASA and raising a family I could never have afforded it. But was always a dream!
If you want to learn to fly, even to just get to that first solo, and you can find the money, just do it! I started at 58y.o. and it has changed me soooo much. It's an amazing thing to do.
i had no issues doing my unusual attitudes, and recovery.. my instructor had me fly with my head down, and eyes closed (with him paying attention, obviously), and he was frustrated at how well i could control.
A great episode, Lew thanks. I'm about to take my skill test, if it ever stops raining, so this was an excellent refresher.
Fantastic video!
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it 🙌🏻
My PPL DPE had me close my eyes and do what I thought was a standard rate turn. She had me open my eyes once we were at a 45° and dropping nearly 500fpm. She said it would be a trust exercise but it was a pretty solid way to get myself in an unusual attitude
That’ll get you every time.. good way to practice unusual attitudes.
Considering you are basically simulating IMC with *no* reliable instruments, I would be willing to call 500 fpm near enough level flight! In your typical light aircraft, 500 fpm is about 3 degrees off horizontal. Not too bad (imo), if and while, say, you are troubleshooting which instruments to believe.
@@Rodhern well she clearly didn't want it to get into a dangerous attitude. Just enough to take about 1 1/2 seconds to look at everything and figure out what to do. It only took a few seconds to get that out of whack. Imagine actual IMC disorientation
@@coasternut3091 True! And an illustrative example. Thank you for sharing.
Flying Eyes Foggles! Yes please!!! Sign me up
They are great!
@@LewDixAviation Does Flying Eyes have foggles product line?
What iPad and case is he using? I want something that holds the pen like that.
I have a question, being pilot has always been a dream of mine but one thing that I think might restrict me is my height I’m 6.4 still growing at the age of 16 do you think my height will pose a problem?
Lewis! How can I train with you?
🐐
If he takes his baseball cap off, maybe his headset will fit and sound better. That said, I do like flying eyes.
This video is like a burst of creativity. Absolutely brilliant!
