His wild, ruffled hair combined with his monkey tail displayed a feeling of playful mischievousness to tie in with his confidence, and the cosplay friendly jeans and shoes gave him a sense of relatable-ness where I felt like I could probably meet him and become friends with him in real life. Overall, I just look at him, and I see a guy that I'd really like to have as a friend; someone who knows how to have fun, and is confident enough to let that fun carry him into whatever trouble may await. Again, I may be missing some things, as I rarely pay attention to designs or costumes, and I don't have nearly the eye for detail that Twiins has, but Sun's the only character that I've tried to create a similar costume for with one of the characters in an original novel I'm working on. I love Adam's outfit too. Part of the reason it sold it for me was like Blake he's a beast from the Shadows. They were partners. The use of the board jacket and usually having the camera from a lower angel made him feel tall, scary, but calm. Adam's design and usage through the animation were great. Adam stopping before completing sheathing his blade felt like "Oh shit it's over" Also, I don't know if you noticed but it looks like Penny's bow is only holding up a tiny bit of her hair. It's like when you don't know how to do a ponytail and her hair is too short for one so it's just very cute.
Her desk gun is one of my favourites too. When she first showed up on screen I thought, “wow! She looks amazing! Like someone who wears high fashion but doesn’t go too crazy.
Personally, I like Sun’s design in the first 3 volumes. It brings simplicity onto the table and still manages to show his outgoing and fun personality. It also gives me a sort of summer vibe which I feel like Sun’s favourite season would be Summer
An interesting thing is: Monty himself said that he wanted the designs for the characters to be easy to cosplay or modify for cosplay. That is something I liked about the early costumes. Most were in fact not that hard to make or assemble for cosplay. Heck Yang's original design was based on Tifa Lockhart from FFVII in her Advent children design. You even see some of the stuff Yang does is similar to Monty's Dead Fantasy series' Tifa movements
Weiss' Snow pea outfit is probably my favorite. It's simple, fits the character, and managed to actually make a good looking outfit using white as a primary color. Although I really like her manga design by Miwa Shirow is amazing and does a great job of adding a little bit of blue without making it her main color. Also love Blake's Volume 6 outfit when she takes off her Jacket. It makes her entire outfit black which conveys her color very well while also having her pale skin contrast the black. I know it doesn't really count as it's own outfit but that's probably my favorite design for Blake.
Maybe its just me, but I also pick up "hoof"-like elements from Pyrrha's design, which would be a neat nod to Achilles being trained by Chiron who was a centaur. Maybe it's a bit outside your wheelhouse, but I'd love to see you do a look at the atlesian "military" designs and specifically how atlesian characters are armored, weaponed and helmeted and how it's different from other media.
I absolutely agree with Pyrrha having the best design, though personally it would have been better for her sword arm to have the armor and her shield arm to have just the glove, practically speaking. Though that's just my opinion.
I think all the volume 2 alternates are spot on tbh, they're definitely some of my favourites. I also really like Blake's original volume 1 outfit too, it just looks good. I know next to nothing about colour theory tho so it could be horrible.
honestly I could go on for hours about how much I adore emeralds original outfit but it's just so perfect; it fits her character so well, it has really great use of color and it just looks so pretty overall. every time I think of good character design i just automatically jump to emerald because it's just that good
I love Oscar's farm design because it looks really good on him. Makes him look like he works really hard at his farm. But I also like his new green outfit. It really looks cute. Shows that he has transformed.
Omg I can’t believe it took me until now to realize that Pyrrha doesn’t hold on to her shield she uses her semblance to attach it to the metal on her left arm! Ugh the attention to detail on her design was everything!
Emerald and Pyrrha have my favorite designs. One of my favorite parts about them are their contrasting eye colors that really make them pop from their main colors.
I love Nora's Mistral design with every cell of my body. I can't even explain it, its just so cute and displays her personality well. I'm not good with design or explaining design but its all just too good
One of my personal favorites is definitely Yang Hunter outfit, that outfit gotten me more serious into thinking about character design. Something that's always stumped me is trying to make an outfit combat ready. Do you have any advice on that or what are Somethings that make you feel combat ready?
For the world of RWBY, I'd say "don't worry about it too much". Ruby, Weiss, and Blake start out by wearing normal clothes, and the only reason Yang seems slightly more protected is because she's wearing leather. Fusing fashion with fantasy seemed to be the bigger priority for Monty. However, things you can do to help your characters feel more safe is to add minor elements of armor-like additions. Leather materials, multiple layers, wrist/arm guards, protective boots. If you feel you're still struggling, I'd suggest wander around the final fantasy wiki and take a look at some of your favored designs there. Final Fantasy tends to use more "normal" clothes as well, and can help offer more variations and options that you could use for your own designs.
Late reply but I would suggest being mindful of their combat style. Pyrrha's asymmetrical vambrace is a good example--she shields with her left arm, so it's more protected. A character who fights mostly hand to hand will want gloves or possibly some wrapping on their wrists, a character who uses a lot of kicks needs good boots, and an ambush-type character would prioritize stealth. A more mobile character would need more fitted clothes that wouldn't get in the way, etc. Also keep in mind the tools/gear they would need; a sniper character would likely wear eye and hearing protection, which can easily be worked into a cool design. Tl;dr: What parts of their body need the most protection given their fighting style, and what design elements would hinder or augment their abilities?
My advice is to put a lot of focus on where you draw the eye to. Generally for a fighting outfit you'll want the focus to be on the arms and legs, which you can do with stuff like bracers and shin guards or with striking contrast between the limbs and the main body. I would also make a point of mentioning range of motion, the degree to which a character is able to believably move their limbs without having to distort their outfit will do a lot to impact how the audience will perceive their fighting capability. Don't weigh down the joints too much, keep more solid elements on the more long and solid stretches of the body like the ribs and the long parts of the limbs. Apart from that, just avoid exposing skin in inappropriate places or bundling a character up like the little brother in A Christmas Story, and you otherwise have a lot of freedom to do whatever you feel like
I really do wish the insides of Cinder's shoulder coat was red. It's what's holding it down from being closely tied with the Mistral outfit in terms of quality. I do like Adam's old design more as well. The older design made him feel like a yakuza samurai leader, like he would be standing beside Oren in Kill Bill while fighting vengeful blonde women. The timeskip design invokes a 'mercenary for hire' vibe which isn't as cool
14:37 you were talking about her shield arm being more protected with the greave and the shield itself. In the concept art there was a note for her to have it that way too because she can use her semblance to attach her shield back to that arm via the magnetism of the shield and the metal greave on her arm.
My all-time favourite design in rwby is Ruby's outfit. Emo red riding hood with big scythe? GOD, THAT'S SO COOL. And it is this cool while still staying simple! Honestly, her outfit alone was the main reason I picked up this show. I just wanted to look at it longer.
I think one of my favourites is Nora’s v4 outfit. The heart shaped hole is a little weird and would have been better as some sort of print, but otherwise I think the outfit works really well, and I love the silhouette of it. A lighter shade of blue would have been a better contrast with her hair too, but the darkness helps bring a balance to an otherwise very bright and pastel design.
One of my favorite's is Jaune (Atlas) since, as you mentioned in another video, it shows a natural progression with his armor becoming more protective and practical. My favorite part about it though is how knightly it looks. I hope in the future he gets a helmet, maybe one that can retract into a collar as a nod to his hoodie. I just really like helmets and it would really complete the knight aesthetic.
My top favorite design is definitely Winter Schnee! Kinda expected her on this list because I think colour theory and knowing what kind of character she is, definitely fits
I’ve started drawing again and my favourite thing to do is design my friends DnD characters, and I got loads of great tips from watching your videos. So thanks! I’ll attempt a top 10 but I haven’t watched certain volumes in a while but here goes. 1. Ren (Mistral) 2. Ruby (Atlas) 3. Jaune (Atlas) 4. Yang (Volume 2) 5. Cinder (Mistral) 6. Kali Belladonna (I think she only has one outfit) 7. Weiss (Mistral) 8. Pyrrha 9. Adam (Vale) 10. Winter (Atlas) Apparently I like long dresses. Winters new outfit looks very sleek and cool, I just wish the Ace Ops didn’t look identical to her. Weiss mistral outfit looks like something Weiss would wear and doesn’t look cumbersome when she’s hopping around on her glyphs, I just hate that they washed out that nice shade of blue with hideous yellowy lighting. Kali had a lot of colours on her but I love the black and white combo with the little pop of gold detailing.
0:50 I really hate being this dude but I don’t if it helps his case that his PFP is Yang and Blake. I could rant about how underdeveloped blmb is but I would rather not be cancelled because they think I hate a LQTBQ ship but I’ll admit I really did ship Qrow and Clover a lot not really an excuse but still. Again I wasn’t trying to offend anyone and sorry if I did but just speaking from my heart. And this also seems really childish.
Man, the season 2 alternate outfits were my favorite ❤️ their dance outfits were amazing, too (minus Yang’s- it wasn’t even her color). The first thing I ever modeled from scratch was actually Yangs Hunter outfit 😊 I just loved it so much!
What I love about Pyrrha's design is that she looks the most warrior-like and battle ready, compared to the majority of the others who look like they chose fashion over function.
pov, your literally the only one who "likes” cinder so your happy someone said something nice about her (cause trust me i dont have anything nice to say about her either)
really awesome list! Although not my favorite design, I thought Blake's vale outfit was really nice! I liked its french inspired design, as well as its use of white to help identify her body. Super sad to see how roosterteeth didn't improve blake's outfits in volumes 4-8 tho ;-;
I really thought Jaune's first look was a great example of what the show was going for with trendy mideval outfits. Of course his hair is in his eyes, hes meant to be a little rough around the edges because he's dreamy (until you meet him).
3:53 YES IKR?? I frikin LOVE neons atlas look. I was obsessing over how nice it was for a while xp 9:54 yeah its confirmed ily lmao Idk if u can tell already but im listing as i watch. ALSO just saw which is ur number 1 andiwanttomarryyounow Hope the joke doesnt make u uncomfortable oof sori lol
this was really great! I always love your style/design videos/comments because it's not something I usually see people talk about (or if they do they rarely have the words to elaborate). I definitely agree Pyrrha's is one of if not THE best design. I also really like all of Ruby's outfits (even her pajamas are adorable!!) I know people make fun of her poofy sleeves and belts but I find it kind of adorable and unique and charming. I also really love Blake's vale design and Weiss's atlas design. I agree Weiss's braid is chunky and weird especially in the engine but I actually like it in the concept and poster art, and I've just gotten used to it. I know people don't like how her royal blue is only on the jacket but I don't mind tbh, and I don't really mind the lack of white either. It's just cute. Also I have a huge thing for Winter's atlas looks, especially in volume 8. I hate her torso, the belt kind of just goes through a hole in her jacket(???), but overall I love the colors. Raven's pretty cool too
While I'm sad we didn't get to see the first design for Oscar here, I'm also VERY glad that Oscar in total didnt make the top 10 worst so I'm happy right now
Pyrrha is a spartan and her look pays very good homage to their actual look (not 300) ill be honest Monty was to new to story telling and made a huge mistake with removing her. yeah there are lots of problems but this is a major one. they should have gotten rid of miles self insert tbh. i will make my own re-write/re-animated rwby og story and ill be sure to listen to the people that make those long form essay review videos on story telling. expect something in maybe a year or 2 but ill work as hard as i can to give a good story, something i would hope people will give a chance. yeah I'm going to make myself a self insert harem protag but i promise you will like what i do... maybe? no pre spoilers!
Imma be honest, I can understand and very much respect all other choices, but I just... Don't understand Velvet. She is one of those characters that just to me, doesn't look like she is wearing actual clothes.
I'll be honest, I like Neon's Volume 3 outfit better than her Volume 7 outfit. Maybe I'm old-fashioned but I really am not a huge fan of the buns. From a story perspective, it kind of makes sense that they'd make her hair shorter and more difficult to grab onto, considering that she's in the military; a combat profession. But from an aesthetic perspective, I don't actually have any problems with her original outfit, other than thinking some roller blades like in her new outfit would help to make it look a little less old fashioned compared to her other design have those old roller skates instead. I don't hate her Volume 7 outfit; I just don't see what makes it better than Volume 3. I guess that's just how opinions work.
Team RWBY’s vol.2 alternate outfits are some of my favourites. I quite like Blake’s vol.4 outfit, the white trench coat, tank top and boots are a pretty neat combo. Ruby’s ball dress is also pretty good. For the villains Roman looks the best for me, trench coat, gloves, bowler hat, ginger hair and eyeliner are great. Emerald’s vol.2 outfit is a close second for the villains.
i can agree with that. Emerald personally has my favorite design, and she got the second best spot lol. And the number one pick makes sense. Honestly its so interesting to see Monty's original drawing next to the actual concept art.
I think you should have had vol 4 Jaune somewhere on the list. It took what you like from his original look and amplified it. Like Pyrrha the waist cloth has purpose, being both a tribute to his fallen partner and a clear reflection of Jaunes growth. It felt like the natural evolution of his design and perfectly matched the evolution of his character arc. I thought how he changed his weapons made them look more visually appealing and less generic (straightening the double arcs on his shield for example). And the tributes found in the outfit made the design feel more impactful. Jaunes entire look pays tribute to the things that have defined him, his partner and possibly first love (the sash and weapons), his simpler origin (the basic-ish armour and sweatshirt), but also his history in all the arcs that came before him, since most elements of his design are old fashioned and came from the outfit his heroic grandfather wore. It feels like a blend of the classic Knight and the teenage boy. Honorable, and slightly goofy and incredibly genuine (basically all the best parts of Jaunes personality) Setting aside arguments about the hair, I would say it is a near perfect design. Near perfect because Pyrrha is still Queen, but arguably part of the top five, or at the very least the top ten.
0:50 Ya know, I think that comment would have been okay if they didn't straight up say you weren't allowed to have the opinion you had 😅. We love the sharing of subjective opinions in a RESLECTFUL manor that doesn't try to invalidate other people's subjective opinions.

Everyone else: outfits, accessories etc.
Ironwood: HOT
You know...
I would f*cking love if you did a whole video on color theory and character design! I mean, you don't HAVE to... But, it would be nice! 😏
That roast of Pyrrha at the end made me choke on my drink 👁👄👁
You’re not wrong tho
It’s incredible how Einlee’s designs are either incredible or horrible, no inbetween
I love Adam's outfit too. Part of the reason it sold it for me was like Blake he's a beast from the Shadows. They were partners.
The use of the board jacket and usually having the camera from a lower angel made him feel tall, scary, but calm.
Adam's design and usage through the animation were great.
Adam stopping before completing sheathing his blade felt like "Oh shit it's over"
Also, I don't know if you noticed but it looks like Penny's bow is only holding up a tiny bit of her hair. It's like when you don't know how to do a ponytail and her hair is too short for one so it's just very cute.
Gonna just say it before I even view this.
Coco Adel.
My absolute favorite RWBY character. I hope she makes it q.q
glad I'm not the only one :>
I hope we get to see team CFVY again in the show at some point
@@theshtposter I heard that the CFVY book takes place in Vacuo so maybe we get to see them next arc along with team SSSN
@@carm_ar oh yay
I know it doesn't really count as it's own outfit but that's probably my favorite design for Blake.
never realized until this video that monty was just as good with fashion as he is with battle choreography 😂
For me Ruby’s Vol 8 design is my favorite, probably cus her hairstyle is eye catching to me.
honestly I could go on for hours about how much I adore emeralds original outfit but it's just so perfect; it fits her character so well, it has really great use of color and it just looks so pretty overall. every time I think of good character design i just automatically jump to emerald because it's just that good
I love Oscar's farm design because it looks really good on him.
Still my favorite design is yang's Hunter outfit.
It's hand down the best.
For the longest time I've always found Roman's outfit to be very pleasing to the eye
Apart from that, just avoid exposing skin in inappropriate places or bundling a character up like the little brother in A Christmas Story, and you otherwise have a lot of freedom to do whatever you feel like
glad i wasn’t the only one who remembers weiss’ black and white coat look haha, i personally really like neo’s design.
I love Pyrrha, Adam and I personally like Neo’s Vale outfit but very good choices here
15:09 The timing on this was perfect.
My favorite design would be Ren Mistral outfit
14:37 you were talking about her shield arm being more protected with the greave and the shield itself. In the concept art there was a note for her to have it that way too because she can use her semblance to attach her shield back to that arm via the magnetism of the shield and the metal greave on her arm.
My all-time favourite design in rwby is Ruby's outfit. Emo red riding hood with big scythe? GOD, THAT'S SO COOL. And it is this cool while still staying simple! Honestly, her outfit alone was the main reason I picked up this show. I just wanted to look at it longer.
Wow I really thought you were gonna add Cienna to the list! You seem to love her character design so much
I think it's a bit too complicated to make it onto the list
Glad I’m not the only one who thinks the Hunter look is Yang’s best, though I’ve always looked at it as beige rather than yellow.
beige is a shade of yellow
Yangs hunter outfit was my favorite was so happy to see it made it in the top three
I think one of my favourites is Nora’s v4 outfit.
Raven's design is one of my favorites, which may or may not be due to the fact that I'm in love with Omen
1. Ren (Mistral)
2. Ruby (Atlas)
3. Jaune (Atlas)
4. Yang (Volume 2)
5. Cinder (Mistral)
6. Kali Belladonna (I think she only has one outfit)
7. Weiss (Mistral)
8. Pyrrha
9. Adam (Vale)
10. Winter (Atlas)
Apparently I like long dresses.
Same, I also thought his comment was super immature and the fact that he was attacking people over a fictional relationship makes him look even worse.
@@kelsyhua8988 let’s hope he doesn’t find this

Man, the season 2 alternate outfits were my favorite ❤️ their dance outfits were amazing, too (minus Yang’s- it wasn’t even her color).
The first thing I ever modeled from scratch was actually Yangs Hunter outfit 😊 I just loved it so much!
Great list. It makes me want to rethink some of my designs. I'll admit I'm a bit guilty of trying to put more red in Ruby, and it doesn't always work.
It's an easy trap to fall into.
What I love about Pyrrha's design is that she looks the most warrior-like and battle ready, compared to the majority of the others who look like they chose fashion over function.
I'm so mad pyrrha was such a good character
Kicking in _Bein' Friends_ for Penny was a very good song choice. It just _fits_ her.
pov, your literally the only one who "likes” cinder so your happy someone said something nice about her
(cause trust me i dont have anything nice to say about her either)
I loved this! And thank you for mentioning Pyrrha and Emerald as I see them as top tier too. My favorite is probably Raven.
my all-time favorites are Ruby's Atlas, Yang's Hunter and Weiss' long version of her mistral (atlas?) dress
1:11 RETURN TO MONKE......whoops wrong one
What is a king to A GOD.
Pyrra seems like a fusion of Wonder woman and Artemis from DC comics.
And yes, Red is the best colour indeed.
really awesome list! Although not my favorite design, I thought Blake's vale outfit was really nice! I liked its french inspired design, as well as its use of white to help identify her body. Super sad to see how roosterteeth didn't improve blake's outfits in volumes 4-8 tho ;-;
I was obsessing over how nice it was for a while xp
9:54 yeah its confirmed ily lmao
Idk if u can tell already but im listing as i watch. ALSO just saw which is ur number 1 andiwanttomarryyounow
Hope the joke doesnt make u uncomfortable oof sori lol
My top 3 would have to be any of Neo's outfits, Qrow (and raven are tied) and Blake when she went home and into town
this was really great!
Raven's pretty cool too
I'm a slut for Top 10 videos, so this was a very fun video indeed. I do agree Pyrrha's design is *chef's kiss*
I'm a simple man
I see coco, I LIKE
This description of Emerald aged well
Ruby's atlas.
Yang's vale.
Raven.
Qrow's atlas.
Mercury atlas.
Oscar's V6 outfit.
Jimmy's atlas.
Ruby (Vale) is absolutely ADORABLE! She's always been iconic.
Yeah my favorite design is Neon's V7 look and I'm glad it was at least included on the main list.
While I'm sad we didn't get to see the first design for Oscar here, I'm also VERY glad that Oscar in total didnt make the top 10 worst so I'm happy right now
Gosh, I hope I don't bring bad luck with this comment, but Im really happy to see Twiins upload so frequently now :DDD
Gnarled Monky's Paw finger curls
the pyrrha hate at the end holy moly 😂
Pyrrha is a spartan and her look pays very good homage to their actual look (not 300)
ill be honest Monty was to new to story telling and made a huge mistake with removing her. yeah there are lots of problems but this is a major one. they should have gotten rid of miles self insert tbh.
i will make my own re-write/re-animated rwby og story and ill be sure to listen to the people that make those long form essay review videos on story telling. expect something in maybe a year or 2 but ill work as hard as i can to give a good story, something i would hope people will give a chance.
yeah I'm going to make myself a self insert harem protag but i promise you will like what i do... maybe? no pre spoilers!
Damn, my girl Nora almost made it...
I agree with the list though!
Remember When you can still see the Red, White, Black, Yellow in team RWBY?
I want Phyrra's boots and Neopolitan's outfit.
I just realised that I misspelt respectful and I can't change it now ahahaha
Honestly the atlas design for Cinder would had worked if they just made the outer coat red than make it a mostly fully black onsomble
