When I made this video I'd never heard of SHEIN before. I used it as counter examples because it would often be one of the recommended websites via google when I searched for the prices of items outside of Roosterteeth. It's become increasingly clear though that SHEIN is an exploitative hell-hole, and you should not buy anything from them. If I'd known at the time I wouldn't have used their examples in this video.
For what it's worth, while SHEIN dramatically low-balls prices, basically everything can be bought at a lower price than what you find at the RT store still if you shop elsewhere.
Rooster teeth could've been making fucking bank if they did body pillows years ago. Imagine how many Kali and Ironwood body pillows would sell

So, just for comparison, I got my carbon steel replica of Myrtenaster (Weiss' rapier) with a full-length blade and rotating chamber, balanced as a rapier should be, for _$150._ It came with a soft white leather sheath with Weiss' emblem emblazoned on it.
It is gorgeous, insanely durable and of immaculate quality, and one of the best things I own, fan-merch or otherwise.

At this point RT could make a shirt with a half assed sketch of Yang with the wrong colors on her for 70 dollars and people will still buy it. It's sad.

I knew Rwby merch was overpriced, but I didn’t expect everything to be so ugly! Why did Rooster Teeth choose to make weird stuff, like a silverware set and a parka? Is anyone actually buying Rwby parkas? Why not make posters, keychains and figures, ya know like most anime series? This series has a ton of cute anime girls, shouldn’t making merch be easy? Also not a fan of Rooster Teeth not crediting their artists!!
To be fair I've seen stranger anime merch (such as luxury Madoka Magica bra and pantie sets.......no I don't know why those exist) but otherwise I agree with you.

EDIT: Every time Alison and Critter were shocked by the price of merch, I had the exact same expression. I knew RT merch was overpriced, but $45 for an ugly beach towel, over $100 for that raincoat-material parka, $30 for those hideous tiki mugs, and $400 for a cosplay Crescent Rose that doesn’t even function for it’s intended purpose?
This is ridiculous…

I think RT is leaning into the fact that whatever fanbase is left for RWBY will buy just about anything with the show's name on it.
The tye-dye socks legit look like they were ripped straight off a hobo's feet, and the price of the flimsy scythe violates the Geneva Conventions.

The weiss parka is Literally just a mediocre quality rain coat but if you intent to use it as a rain coat rather than a parka it's pretty good.
Well, it’s good if you consider the ridiculously high price fair, as there are raincoats that are far, FAR, cheaper, with possibly better quality and/or long enough to cover your legs.

I feel bad for all the models for the hoodies and parkas and things, they're always out at some photo set and its like 105 degrees half the year here in Texas. Also I know someone irl who bought the Ruby scythe, I can confirm it does wobble around with the slightest breeze lol

This was such a JOY to watch all the way through but oh I was not prepared for the outrage that consumed me at that final item. Like. I’ve made my OWN cosplay scythe out of cheap construction store foam and it was FIRM and STURDY, and the materials were easily 1/8th that price or less. You could twirl that thing around all day and hit people with it without it ever losing shape. The RT store is a CRIME.
So as a price comparison for the scythe, I thought that a LARP weapon might be a good option, since they're also foam weapons but they're also usually made to be sturdy enough that you can hit people with them for extended periods and they won't be badly damaged. First LARP war-scythe I found was $75. That is a one-handed weapon however, if you wanted a LARP weapon a similar size to Crescent Rose, you'd be looking at more like $120.
The cosplay Crescent Rose being so much is shocking. I'm gonna compare them to Sailor Moon wand proplicas which are typically around $100-$250 (at least when they first came out, the second hand market jacks their prices up). Wand proplicas are much smaller than Crescent Rose, but the items are made entirely of quality plastic and fake jewels (depending on the gimmick of the wand), come with cute and detailed stands to display the wands, and are mechanical (they play multiple music/sound clips from Sailor Moon and light up). Even cheaper proplicas like Light Sabers you can buy at any toy store light up and make noise. Like sneak a voice box in Crescent Rose so it makes noises so it kinda looks like it warrants the price tag.
Loving what you did with Allison’s lil’ cartoon avatar in particular. Her expressions are great!
Also the merch is stupid but we all knew that before we clicked on this video.

The Yang plush was weird. I notice on some parts of it, such as the neck strap or whatever, it looks like it was attached with super glue. It’s definitely made of felt.

The fully functional, full scale Nerf Gjallarhorn (a weapon from the game Destiny), which had a shell firing mechanism unique to it, is $160. And that was considered overpriced, for an item that actually does something and is no doubt a better cosplay piece than that foam monstrosity that costs nearly 3 times as much 😂

Fun note with the scythe you can buy something kinda sorta comparable weapon wise(war scythe that is marked as "battle ready") on kult of athena for about 106 USD without shipping or a foam one for 157 USD. Know the rwby brand adds a bit of a price jump but wow. Thats still crazy

I was hoping you guys would one day talk about the merch. Their products have only gotten more expensive over the years. Like how can any pair of swimtrunks cost 55 USD? In my country in New Zealand, that's around 87 NZD. What is so special about these swimtrunks that they have to cost that much? Especially since apparently the material they used for the swimtrunks and matching shirt is cheap. It has like one star currently on RT's store.
Apparently just being associated with RWBY will make the price go up no matter the quality.
Also human versions of you guys is super cute. Especially with the reactions added in. They should be used more lol.

So, for the ruby design at 6:47 I think I know the problem, the right eye is too far off and her hair is just a blob rather than being outlined like the others. Comparing to yang it is obvious that the eye is just a little too far on the head. Maybe the mouth is a bit weird too but those are the main reasons it looks off.
The one at 3:59 however, I have no clue what it is, maybe the mouth again. But everything should technically look fine on that one.
Also, why I'm considering the mouth as a reason is because it's a simple open happy anime mouth, but lines added to the bottom arc making the mouth look odd but it's not too odd to be a reason.
Ok they add lines on the top arc instead of the bottom in the 6:47 design, but the point still stands.
For some reason, Rwby characters as chibis in both show and merch just never looked right.

So I live in France currently and the RT store's prices have always been crazy to me. Even when I lived in the states, I used to wait until the holidays before I got stuff. I especially try not to buy things that don't have reviews because I've had horrible experiences with some of their products. I've gotten better RWBY stuff from Hottopic than I did from RT and it was cheaper.
I loved this! You, Allison and Critter always make for a fun video. And learning about the prices, especially the Crescent Rose replica and Parka blew my mind with how overpriced they actually are
Side note: The art may be simple, but it's so cute!
I got car decal stickers for me and my friend for about five bucks back in the day, and they've held up great. Since then, I've scrolled through to see what's available and am always floored by the prices haha! Great video!

Am I the only one who thinks Twiins iink looks like King Dice from Cuphead? The suit reminds me so much of that character. My favorite part was the break. My least favorite merch item is that 2 T-shirts in one...T-shirt. You can even SEE that the two halves are stitched together inside the item at the collar. It makes me wonder: "What would it look like they did the same thing with the other halves? Half a flower (? ,IDK what's Blake's emblem) with two legs?"

The only one of those reasonably priced ones I'll call out are the geeki tiki ones because that's an actual brand of novelty tiki cups. It's not specifically RT.

Whats really annoying is that a higher price *could* be justified if the merch was high enough quality, but the thing is it very clearly isn't. It so clearly reeks of roosterteeth trying to squeeze every penny they can out of fans who may not know better.

I've never really been to the RT store, and I figured that Rooster Teeth stuff would be more expensive, but I had hoped the quality would at least be adequate with the merch being well thought out. It looks like they're just throwing everything at the wall and seeing what sticks instead of leaving merch ideas on the cutting room floor.

The streetwear lines are pretty new. I think with Ice Queendom they're trying to have some merch that would appeal more to hip kids in Japan, where street fashion is more popular? But I can't know for sure.

I’m honestly kinda like, appalled by how overpriced some of this stuff is?? Like holy shit I thought other merch was bad, but this is so egregious that I’m surprised ANYONE buys it. The only RWBY merch I was aware of before this video were the Funko pops (which, like, ew…) so this was a shock
The one item I will defend slightly, though, are the plushies. 20$ for a 9” plushie of a character, while still kinda being overpriced, isn’t horrible. Some of the Pokemon and Kirby plushies I’ve bought have been 30$ for a similar size, and anime-style plushies like that are usually 15-20 so it does check out, admittedly, even if they’re kinda ugly
