@@twiinsiink My fiance and I were re-watching the series for the volume 7 finale, and we were wondering about that as well. When I looked into it I found that apparently it is addressed in either a manga or a comic book. I have not read it yet, but it sounded like they fleshed that plot thread out pretty well.

@@JohnAWoods-ui3gp Someone worded it better than I'm about to attempt right now, but i somewhat resent that this additional context is left out of the show because the show is what's considered canon. Additional materials some people may not know of or have interest in getting due to medium make it less official and less canon to a lot of people since if anything, it's only supplemental. I wish they acknowledged it in the show at some point, even if it's something like Ruby saying it was cool at the beginning before they knew each other and she was horrible at conversing (in fact, I feel like she might have?).

Weiss's entire design looks too heavy, she's always looked like she's dancing elegantly whenever she battles so her outfits were always on the lighter side, now it looks like she might trip on something.

Yeah, I sort of wish she went away from the whole princess look to show her leaving her family entirely and going down her own path now. Maybe a more elegant and light sophisticated look or something would be better. But over all, it feels like the production team just sort of forgot the personality/backstory of the characters when making their outfits

      @Kylesico912x 4 года назад +71

Yeah, like I wish they based her dress off dancers. Perhaps something a woman would typically wear for Salsa or Tango. Give that evolution while keeping the hint sophistication to her designs. Add a coat for warmth and maybe make the outfit a little lighter as she would be more used to the weather in Atlas, especially in comparison to Blake who is from a tropical island.

To be fair, compared to everyone else's design, Jaune's V7 design is the one that changed the least from V6. If you take a side by side comparison of his V6 and V7 character designs, you can really see that his V7 character design is more of a streamlined and more fitting to his body. His breastplate has gotten bigger so that it covers his whole torso and looks more like an armored vest. His hoodie is also less pronounced as well. All in all, Jaune's V7 design gives off the feeling of a being a more streamlined, mature, minimalist redesign of his V6 character design.

Weiss' hair kinda looks like plastic now, since she lost all the splits in her hair.
Also her hair looks like lost its vibrance in the later volumes, like in the first volume it practically glowed but now in most settings it looks like a light purply blue color instead of white, but that might just might be the lighting and art style change. To some degree her hair look like it was artificaly given volume not very well I might add but to some what add to what I was saying about her hair looking like plastic, there's no details at all it's just a blob sitting on her head and the artifical volume comes from all the bulbing and circle tool using for the character modelling for her and especially the braid, really cut that thing off and suddenly she could be blake or any character with short hair and a long coat? dress?. You wouldn't even know because how undistinct she would look, even with the braid you wouldn't be able to tell a lot from her silhouette.

Honestly, Blake should've gotten the braid, and Weiss gotten the hair-cut.
If I were to design these two for V7 and out, I'd given Blake a long braid going down the back. When she's doing flips and fights, the braid would add some "Tail" addition to her silhouette. This, in my opionion, would give her more of a cat-like figure... cuz you know, Cat-faunus. It's also more practical than long loose hanging hair like she had from V1-V6, and the new haircut doesn't really improve upon that.
As for Weiss, she should've been the one to cut her hair sort of like a rebellious act against her family. She also shouldn't have this royal look to her, like you pointed out, because she was supposed to strive to be different than her family name. Thus, a short/semi-short haircut would fit her more rebellious attitude.
Other than that, I agree with basically everything in this video.
Overall, i think RT and the designers screwed up here. Its also annoying how all the colours are all wrong up.

I just wish the outfits fit the cold much better, like they talk about how cold it is, but barely mention how cold it is in the show despite their outfits not doing much for warmth. They had the chance to adjust it to the climate while also making the outfits unique to each character, though they pretty much dropped the ball in my opinion.
Also Weiss just looks heavy, which contradicts with her elegant ballerina fighting style. Her outfit should look more graceful. How can she even fight in all of that? It’s just making her look stiff. I think RT is taking “Ice Queen” too seriously. Weiss is a fighter so she should be wearing something that makes her look like one, not something that makes her look like she’s going to a royal ball.

Christoper Putt they didn’t really nerf the ace ops, the ace ops treated each other just as coworkers and not friends, this lead to them not considering each other’s perspectives and motives while fighting. Harriet and Elm’s emotions were high causing them to loose their professionalism and get sloppy. Contrasting my team RWBY worked to split up the ace ops leaving them in really bad parings. Weiss’ summoning overwhelming Marrows semblance. Blake and Yang took Vine by surprise. Elm was ready to blow herself who knows without being able to grip onto the terrain though yangs newfound attention to detail allowed her to to knock elm off her balance (an occurrence she more than likely finds rare and hard to deal with) to deal the final blow. Harriet fell victim to the same unlearned lesson of the tale she’s based off of. In the end she relied on out speeding rwby only for Weiss to catch her off guard.

Meanwhile, back on the "Blake's redesigns are worse than Cinder Show"
But for real, this got me interested in character design. I hadn't really noticed before, but most of these designs make me want to vomit on an instinctual level, just because they've got SO MUCH going on. There's tons of everything on everyone's outfit, and when I started thinking about that as I watched the video, I almost cried looking at Jaune. The boy is just upgrading steadily, not throwing belts and zippers all over the place. I didn't really appreciate how simple his design is until now. Seeing Ren made me want to vomit. And I was even thinking about how you mentioned they were supposed to be easy to cosplay, which made me realize that these outfits are mostly insane. I can't see anybody wearing a lot of this stuff in a real world setting! It makes me think about the Volume 1-3 designs, with how simple and concise they were. These guys look like they went to Narnia, but instead of a magical wardrobe, it was a really aggressive one that forced them to model as much clothing at once as possible. This isn't a big issue for me, since character design isn't my main reason for liking RWBY, but it is something I'd be happy if they dealt with.

I really do agree on this. While I've never really done that much of a characters design, I see now how's it's really important. In all honesty I was really disappointed in both Blake and Weiss's design overall. They added more blue and grey than white and even changed her hair that looks more like a whip and that's just sad. They also could have put the red somewhere else on the dress to where we can see it most of the time but no they didn't. Now for Blake...not a fan with the short hair at all and it looks really...unattractive to me. I would have preferred her original hair design better than now and why add more white than black? It just makes me upset about it is all, but they do represent their "OWN" color just like back in V1-3 but now she's starting to look like a background character just like the rest of her team and Jaune's team.

Oh shit, I've never seen someone game enough to mention skin tone when talking about character design. It seems like its very taboo to acknowledge its a color/tone like any other and plays into a design.
I've been thinking of a video for a while now on the idea that we as a society might just suck at designing black characters cause we simply havn't done it as much or for as long. I've been thinking when people say a black character feels forced just for being black what they really mean is that the design looks bad on account of them being a black character drawn like they're white.
I've also noticed that appart from movies where a pre-established character's skin color is changed, the complaint doesn't appear in live-action. It only appears in animation.
Which has lead me to believe black characters in animation often don't have any contrast in their skin because we don't use skin highlights for effecient animation. So black characters often have no constrasts of tone in their design, they just kinda look like a single dark tone with nothing breaking it up.
BUT on the flip side, white characters DO have contrast even though most animation doesn't utalise shadows, but thats because in animation, every single character in animation is already outlined in black, which contrasts the skin tone.
I'd be curious to know what you think of this, i'm very new to visual design and color theory and that video is going to cover a rather delicate topic, so i'm trying to expose this idea to people who might know better before I start scripting.

    • @twiinsiink

I'm struggling to think of "sucky" black designs? Static Shock, Garnet (from steven universe), Fat Albert, Penny Pride (and really the whole pride family), Numba 5 from Code name kids next door, Cyborg from teen titans. They've all got really cool styles, use of color and are really iconic.
I'm not researched enough on the discourse on changing skin tones to comment on the frequency of it.
On the topic of contrast, I see where you're coming from but I can't think of an example where a black character sort of "gets lost" in the contrast or lack there of. Though, that could definitely be an issue with the bold-outline look of many cartoons. Luckily, unique styles of animation help alleviate that problem (animation like the tangled cartoon is a good example of not having to worry about that black out line).
Did you have any specific examples in mind around this topic?

    • @Uniquenameosaurus
      @Uniquenameosaurus 4 года назад +10

@@twiinsiink Oh yeah examples. So all the examples you listed there with the exception of fat albert and the dad in the proud family I agree are good designs, but all of them incorporate bright tones. Static shock has the yellow bow and both him and Garnet have white visors,(Also garnets skin is more maroon so i don't know how that changes things), cyborg has bright blue highlights and light grey metal on his chin and cheek, Numba 5 has a bright big red hat and gold ear rings. And the Proud family either has really light skin to begin with (most characters in Boondocks are like that aswell) and/or light toned lipstick like Penny, white hair and red glass like grandma, or bright lines through the hair like the mother or the baby. (Esmeralda also uses the hair line technique who i'm a fan of)
Examples I think look... like i'm not going to say sucky but... dramatically less striking are Craig of the Creek's MC who had some people claiming forced divirsity and I personally think is a good example cause all his family look fine with the incoporation of things like glasses, bandana's, light grey hairlines, earrings or lipstick or just a lot lighter skin with the little sister, who DOES have a scrunchy tbh. Its just the MC who lacks that kind of thing. /watch?v=MvQgdjCU6hE (I'm also not sure how much hairlines help to break up tones even if they're not bright, I don't seem to mind Kilik from Soul eater for this reason)
I think its probably alot easier to notice by comparison, like, who's your least favourite Proud Family design? or, between Harriet, Elm and Marrow, which is your favourite design?
Cause to me Harriet just seems to pop alot more with her bright hair and eyebrows.
Oh also Chase from Genlock is one that felt really jarring to me, he has the tiniest amount of blue thats only visible on one side of his face and thats all. Also, minor characters in rooster teeth shows like rwby have nothing added to their design to replace the natural highlights of black skin and just look so flat to me.
Are there any black characters in the Tangled cartoon to look at to see if it looks better? Cause my point was that the black outline adds contrast to white characters and does nothing for black characters. So taking the outline away wouldn't really do anything to fix the problem in my mind.

    • @twiinsiink
      @twiinsiink  4 года назад +17

I dunno, I think you might be getting lost in the details? Bright colors are used in lots of character designs, especially cartoons (take a look at the rainbow that it Ed, Edd and Eddy's cast). I don't think one HAS to vibrant accents to help their features become clear- but rather than vibrant accents are helpful overall in character design. Numba 5's red hat and earnings are functionally no different than numba 2's pilot cap and yellow goggles. The only thing one has to keep in mind is color theory. Don't give your character an accessory or shirt that's the same color as their skin (which we can see how that also applies to white characters with Ruby's cream shirt last volume).
I think Craig's problem is that he has a very boring design. I don't watch this show, but looking at the 3 leads... he just has a very boringly safe design. The other boy's large sleeves and long face, the girl's big eye brows and and cape. They have more interesting elements on them. Craig looks like they were probably afraid to take and chances for fear of making him look accidentally racist and so made him a default, nice boy. Which I get going with that decision, but it does lead to a bland and unforgettable main character.
My favorite Proud family design is the grandma, just a real nice use of silhouette for her. And between Harriet, Elm, and Marrow, I like Marrow the best. His scruffy hair helps sell the "puppy" vibe and the way they designed his uniform shows us how up-tight he's trying to be (since he's the newest member of the team, gotta be professional). Though Harriet's eyes, unique hair, and emphasized thighs does help her stand out a bit from her team. I totally understand why she's your favorite!
They do lack a natural highlight, so I see why they look more flat to you. Though, with the ump to Maya I think the whole show got more flat looking. Perhaps with time they can figure out how to get soft highlights in the show!
I don't watch the Tangled cartoon, i've just seen a few clips from it, sorry.
I think this all sorta boils down to- people need to keep color theory in mind. You can't design a black character the same way you design a white character because their base colors are so different (I mean, even the minor difference in skin tone between Ruby's concept art and model made a huge impact on the design). Just like how "yellow isn't my color" in real life, that applies to illustrated characters too.
It's not necessarily a need for bright tones, but rather contrast- which is important for all character design. (I think Boondocks is a good example of this).
And, I guess to round this all out, I don't know if you've seen it but there's an anime that I think was produced by Jaden Smith (Will Smith's son). It's called Neo Yokio. And I recommend giving it a look for your continued studies into designing black characters!

    • @Uniquenameosaurus
      @Uniquenameosaurus 4 года назад +4

@@twiinsiink Well thats what i'm saying, i'm not saying black characters need bright tones or accessories inherently. I'm saying all characters need contrast in their design. Its just a character outline gives inate contrast to white characters since the outline is black.
Like if you had a head shot of just Weiss face, a character with white skin, white hair and basically nothing but bright tones, and then you removed all the outlines, her face would look like a giant white smudge, it would look terrible.
I'm looking through the list of tangled adventure character and you can't find a single character who's designed like that because they don't have outlines. The closest you get is repunzal herself but she has dark hairlines, dark red lipstick and she has waaay thicker lines around her eyes, she even has slightly darker skin and a dark red to her nose, these are all the opposite in tone additions to what i've been saying about black characters.
She looks totally different to her design in the movie, which makes sense cause the movie is a high budget 3d model CGI movie with a lighting engine that will add an appropriate amount of shadow to her face to give her contrast to her design as it has nothing but light tones.

And no offence to the people who have put so much time and effort into creating this show. But for me it just reinforces the feeling that when Monty died, the show lost its soul. The world lost its vibrancy and (literal) colour, the stylised, rhythmic, and dynamic fights, and even the casual interpersonal interactions that were at the heart of the team and kept it fun. Now the show goes on because it's profitable, and the merch and deals they can make with the rights are profitable as well. But it feels like it's just going through the motions. Especially when you lay the costume changes out like that, where they are so unconnected to any character development, the world at large, and without any consideration for other members of the group. RWBY feels like a merch factory and character design fashion runway now than anything else.

Specially when you consider that Monty would sit down with Ein Lee and talk about the designs. Kerry wrote a little article on the new outfits and most of what he said is that they are dressing for a cold weather which doesn't look like it tbh, and that Weiss is more of a caster now.
None of the new designs were written into the story itself, so they don't have any consideration for it. If RWBY was a book, mentioning how the characters changed their outfit would be pointless since it doesn't mean anything.

ProxyDoug - Previously Douglas Rosa It seems a little insulting to Weiss that she’s now a caster. Weiss did a good job supporting the team and her own skills (her swordswomanship) with her Glyphs, and now they’re just throwing away Weiss’ entire character. Especially when she wanted to be like her sister, Winter, and that scene of them back in Vol. 3 when they were training together and showcasing more of Weiss’ character development. I remember that fight back in Volume 2 against Torchwick and with the whole team showcasing their skills and TEAMWORK. Weiss just isn’t the type to sit back and cast Glyphs like some DnD support character, we saw that time and time again she also jumps into action, because she has a rapier not a WAND. Everything about Weiss now threw away her entire character demo in the WHITE trailer, when she was able to defeat a giant by herself. Its disappointing to see them change their roles as they see fit based on how they incorrectly portray their own characters. To them they still think of Weiss as this hissy fit princess and they punish her by downgrading her as we go by Volumes. We especially see that in her new outfit. For someone with a elegant type of swordsmanship such as the rapier, which requires precision and speed, her two layers of dresses don’t make sense at all.

ProxyDoug - Previously Douglas Rosa It just seems like there’s a huge disconnect with the characters utilizing their semblances and their skills with their weapons. They treat their semblances like, “Hey, look at this cool thing I can do!” Rather than using them productively and effectively. They also treat their weapons like props rather than items that can literally destroy robots in one swing. Now with the shift of tone and genre with the entire show, all of the characters themes are just a mish mash of nonsense. I loved all of their demos, we saw that Ruby was capable of taking down a whole horde by herself since she has such a huge and dangerous weapon, Weiss is very precise and practical with her rapier, Blake is agile and effective with her blade(s) and ribbons, and Yang is brute and vicious with her shotgun gauntlets. Combining dust, gunfire, and their semblances with transformative weapons has always been the main spotlight of RWBY for years, and for me was one of the biggest reasons why I got into the show. The plot then drew me in as I found that it wasn’t just about kids with cool weapons. Its a show about fighting and yet they made it the most least important thing to them overtime.

Weiss' hair looks so freakin heavy. how does she fight with that. idk about y'all but i feel like weiss should've gotten the short hair haircut instead of Blake. i've seen a few fan art of it and it looks very good. now, i'm not saying she should have it because it looks nice, but just because her hair looks really heavy and seeing all the twirls and stuff she does, i can see it smacking her face a lot. and long hair is very common amongst royals or people with high power. her having short hair will clearly represent Weiss' devotion to being a huntress.
as for blake, she is sort of a ninja so i can see her bang's getting in the way and blocking her vision a lot, like with jaune. she should keep her hair down, but pull the sides of her hair back with a clip or band so that her hairstyle still changes, but it isn't such a drastic change and it's more realistic. it also fits blake's character a bit. the short bob hairstyle Blake has, especially with the bangs, is more of a pure, innocent look. it seems bright, yet dulled down. that's why it fits people like ruby and penny. considering blake's sort of distant, cold character, it just doesn't match her. so yeah. but feel free to like whatever you want to like :)

I had never noticed how much detail Weiss' hair lost. On that note, a friend of mine pointed out that Blake's hair doesn't have enough definition and Jaune's has too much.
On both Weiss and Jaune, I hate how their outfits makes it look like they have their shoulders down on a more neutral pose. Doesn't help that Weiss' gloves are so dark that it makes it harder to see when they are close together and in front of her torso and Jaune's shoulder pads literally point down (as well as just being glued to his shirt).
Jaune's pants look great since they seem to have been taken straight from the military. Maybe it would've been nice to have them wear uniforms for a while and when they rebelled against Ironwood, they could incorporate their original designs on top of the military getup. Which is something that they don't do anymore, characters don't change outfits and hair styles mid volume, they did for the Atlas dormitory and that was it.
Lastly, I'm still baffled by the fact Blake's outfit is just one catsuit that starts on her shoes and goes to her neck. I've seen the concept art many times and I still don't know how she get's into it.
    Edit:
Another thing that contributes into making Nora's design looks so out of place, is that she always used to wear two distinct pieces that separated her bottom half to her top half and it felt genuine. Now it's more of a suit, the type you can't make on a character creator.

Something has been bothering me about Weiss’ outfit from Volume 4. In the concept art and in Volume 4, it looks gorgeous. The blue on top and white on bottom is a nice inverse of her previous design. The blues and whites are vibrant and stand out, making her look really great... and then in Volume 5 they wash out the colours by sticking her in boring, yellowish lighting and it comes out as grey. I think it’s the reason you said her outfit was grey. Blue doesn’t do well in yellow lighting. Just wanted to point that out.
On the topic of Weiss’ new design. One massive problem with it is the colours are way too vivid. Her jacket looks like somebody painted it. The colours are flat and boring. Putting her in softer colours, like the softer blues fading into the white, would be so much better than this random collection of primary school blues.

I feel like Weiss and Blake should have swapped hairstyles, in a sense. Weiss wearing her hair down to signify she's not letting her past and heritage control her. Blake tying her hair up to show she's getting serious.
Also, Yang probably should have been the one to cut her hair. Go for the future Trunks look.

Something that really annoys me about Blake and Ruby's hair is that Blake's looks more like dark gray and Ruby's is so black they can't even shade it. V1 had both of their hair look this black, so Ruby's red highlights stood out as red next to Blake. Now though, Ruby's hair looks more like the black one than Blake, even though her red is clearer this volume than the previous ones, the black portion of her hair "out-blacks" the so-called black character
Another thing I don't like is the ace ops character designs. They look too much like a matching set, they don't stand out as their own person. All of them have either black or brown hair, and their outfit colors are all exactly the same. I can't get a sense of what's supposed to be their distinct color. The only hint we're given is their eyes, which are so generic looking (aside from Harriet) that we don't really pay much attention. Apparently Vine's aura is light blue ??? Even his semblance doesn't convey that. I get that these are military uniforms and they're not meant to be that different (even though they all have very different and unique designs only keeping the same color palette) but at least have them look less genetic than just brown hair

    • @PolarisVu
      @PolarisVu 4 года назад +12

I actually super dislike the ace ops uniforms as well. Speaking of colour I've hated the addition of red accents all over the place as a part of the Atlesian colour palette. Red was never a primary colour of Atlas, and this ties into the original world building where Atlas is one of the kingdoms stressing conformity and historical suppression of "loud" emotion. This is what made Atlesian characters like Weiss and Neon stand out, precisely because they both rebel against the existing power structure to varying degrees, and both have colours which diverge from Atlas (in addition to Weiss's side ponytail and Neon's...everything).
Now Ironwood and AceOps both have bright red awkwardly all over the place, and it clashes so much with Atlas' previously toned down style. Though I do have to say Ciel's palette also was relatively brighter as well.

    • @twiinsiink
      @twiinsiink  4 года назад +10

@@PolarisVu While I like the pop of color the red adds, it does have the unfortunate side effect of it being a whole city of people dressed like Weiss. I think making the red of their uniforms a gold (like how Ciel had in her design) would have a better choice for keeping Weiss looking distinct.

Here’s the thing about new outfits: more often than not, in my opinion, they’re used to either tell the viewer what the characters are doing, or signifies the passage of time, and volume 7s design don’t do either. For one, none of their outfits look like they belong in Atlas, being that it’s a kingdom of cold (logically Blake should’ve kept her hair long) and since there was no significant passage of time between volumes 6 or 7, there’s no reason for their new designs.

One thing I don't get is that with Blake's recent designs if they must have one of her colours stand out more on the outfit instead of black, why do they always choose white but not purple? I think that change would work better in my opinion because:
    1) It means that she isn't wearing just as much or more white than Weiss is, which makes sense as Weiss is supposed to represent the colour white, not Blake.
    2) Characters from other franchises with black and purple as predominant colours in their designs can look good. In Transformers for example, we have Skywarp and the Insecticons from Transformers G1, Blackarachnia from Transformers Animated, Airachnid from Transformers Prime and Barricade from Transformers War for Cybertron (both the upcoming Netflix series and the figure released in 2019's siege toyline).
    3) It would help in the snow as, with real life mountain climbers, the purple and black makes Blake easy to find in the snow, so if she ever got lost, the others could easily find her. The colour scheme could also help whenever she needs to use stealth as it's utilizing two very dark colours meaning she can blend into shadowy areas.
    4) The purple in Blake's outfit would nicely contrast with the yellow in Yang's outfit and because the two were joined by the hip in this Volume, it would make sense to do this as it means their designs fit well together when they're both on screen.

I mean, yeah when I make RWBY OCs and think about their outfit designs I always look at Volume 1 outfits for inspiration/how to make sure they fit into the world - that should say something.
My issue is that they don't LOOK like RWBY characters anymore; the first three volumes had a very distinct fashion to their character outfits, they were all unique yet fit together in the same universe, they were also really nice to look at. Volume 4-6 fashion was ok? Kinda? It didn't assault the eyes but it didn't 100% feel like RWBY either - then now with Volume 7 for me it feels like a horrible nosedive into confusion with the outfits - the thing I dislike the most is that there's no cohesion anymore, most of them look like they crashed in from an alternate universe, especially Nora, and I don't like it because to me they just don't fit in the RWBY universe looking like that, the distinct fashion from 1-3 is gone, and I miss it.
(Well, that's my opinion, don't shoot me for it please aha)

imma just comment this here cause comments are disabled in the actual video
i love how you can tell when someone is just triggeredly typing a comment with the sole intent to put someone down like in the ones you showcased about body types because there wasn’t a single solid defense against it.
there is a weird increase in titty size.
there is no variation in body type for girls.
there *is* variation for the guys.
it *is* an issue for a show that tries to proclaim about how diverse their show is cause all diverse means is girl power i guess.
but meanwhile there’s not a single person of color as a main protagonist and any variation they had is stripped away.
fighting style can contribute to unique body types.
Yang can be buff and her being the one with boobs while it may rub people the wrong way, it was clear from the dang RED trailer with the cliff hanger silhouette. anyone who knows their stuff could immediately see the YELLOW silhouette and tell “that girls the big boobed one”.
Ruby being the youngest gives her leeway to be young and grow a bit so fine.
Weiss is older and shouldn’t be growing too significantly anymore and regardless her character design always gave off the air of elegance. Having a small and petite body type suits that concept. She doesn’t have to be busty and curvy cause, well Yang’s the busty one.
As for curvy they could’ve just gave that to Blake. She’s a ninja, typical designs for ninjas or sneaky and sleuthy characters are either tight but free moving clothes or if they’re gonna be baggy then she should have accessories and ninja tools and tricks in them. but she doesn’t, that’s not her style or what the show is, so all were left with is the design stuffs from the original, a ninja with a hint of frenchness.
her clothes were tight so they could keep that and accentuate it with a curvy body type. and people should also realize curvy doesn’t mean big boobs but the hourglass outline the boob, waist, and hip ratio make.
so then we have buff and busty, young and growing, small and petite, and sleek and curvy.
I’d say that’s well rounded enough because frankly I don’t exactly care for media trying to portray a “thicc” main character and I know RT wouldn’t include ACTUAL chonky girs, they’d do it the Sakimichan way.
make thicc thighs and still keep the thigh gap, have big boobs but a flat stomach with small slim face and i’m tired of that crap. basically picking and choosing what parts of that body type get people’s rocks off more and ignoring the rest that inevitably come with the whole package.
id honestly rather just see more variety in the other body types than the fetishization and somehow simultaneous ignoring of thicc girls. but no everyone is just the exact same body type.
also in reference to Neo’s design, yes it is extremely strippery but i think it was an attempt to echo Torchwick’s design and have the hat make sense but it was done rather badly.
it also drags out a still unanswered question, why did she care so much about Torchwick? with how much I remember the way the show portrayed it, I had assumed she was one of Cinder’s lackeys or apprentices.

I really love the direction of Penny's new design. The added white, the fluffier dress, the longer hair, her swords often floating behind her like wings, and how often she's flying really gives her an angelic vibe. But the unorthodox nature of the "wings" (metallic and usually spinning behind/around her in a circle) keeps it slightly robotic. Robot angel is a very fitting asthetic for the guardian of Mantle, as well as for a character who essentially was ressurected.

Ruby - great new outfit, kinda goes with the whole atlas theme but still has the similar and classic look from her previous designs
Yang - Yang's outfit would look better if her outfit wasn't as tight, she always wore looser clothes imo
    Weiss - wtf
Blake - the desperate attempt at cutting the hair to show change in her character (plot wise) failed, like your example of Korra, Korra cut her hair during a dark time in her life, it symbolises her change well. With Blake, they could have added a small scene of herself cutting her hair and having a moment to feel relieved about leaving her past behind (if that was supposed to be the reason). It would have made more sense to bothe her character and to the audience.
Jaun - he keeps to his original themes and design with works well
    Nora - tf happened there
Ren - "take me back to the good ol' days".

One of my biggest peeves for Weiss' design for Volume 7 wasn't the lack of white or the massive blob of a ponytail braid, but it was how the model itself didn't have any good physics applied to it. When I first saw Einlee's promotional art for Weiss with her flowing skirt and braid, I thought wow, that looks amazing, but then my excitement dropped so fast when the trailer dropped and there was barely any flow to her outfit. The skirt was stiff, the ponytail braid barely moved and seemed like an inconvenience. Its not particularly anyone's fault, be in Einlee or the character modelers themselves, but I feel like there was a lack of communication because Weiss' design doesn't work with the flowy battle style of what RWBY is. If the models can't be as flowy with more bone physics as it should be, why make an outfit design that looks better with that application?

    - Change the color of Weiss's jacket to a pale blue or a snowy white, make her braid much smaller and more manageable, and halve the amount of belts she has.
    - Change the color of Blake's coat to black, and the jumpsuit to white, and change her heels to flat-footed boots or slippers.

I really like your channel's focus on character design. It's one of those things that's easy to overlook, but it makes a huge difference. I have generally been down on the new designs, so I was shocked when you showed some fanarts of the new looks, and how they looked better than the official show. As you said, I think consistency with the character and the world is key.
I wonder if you would think of doing this kind of thing for other franchises. We've had a lot of video game remakes recently that offer good comparisons. Good luck with your channel! :D

People who say that diversification of body isn't needed is equal as saying that ethnicity or sexual representation isn't needed. They are important factors, especially when we are similar to certain character and want to connect with them.
Of course there are exceptions like Avatar, which focuses on Asians but at least they have sexual, skin tone and body type diversity

You know, after all these rwby videos and explaining you could honestly be a good storywriter for a show. You catch the small details and actually pay attention from the past to help with the writing and ideas for the future. Your arguments are so good and when you point out the flaws it actually makes sense and I feel like if the directors heard it they would definitely agree. The fact that they didnt make those Useless belt buckles on wrist, her iconic black ribbons is heresey to me. I mean her og outfit had the ribbons not just for aesthetic reasons but for functionality, her fighting styles with Gambol Shroud uses those ribbons many times in fights. Her Alternate Outfit Intruder has them as well. And the reason Her Vol 4 Outfit doesnt is probably because she wasnt going home anticipating to fight. But with them in Atlas/Mantle dawning new outfits it makes sense to bring back the ribbons

I'm glad someone finally put this into words...
I'll admit, it's been a while since I've watched the show, fell off around volume five because it just... It didn't really feel like I was watching RWBY anymore, and not in a good way. Like, since Monty died, it's just kinda lost its identity. Watching it feels a lot more bitter than sweet, and stuff like losing focus of the character designs with their colours being lost and their sillhoutes lost just makes it visibly noticeable.
It's a shame, but I'm glad at least with this video I can understand the problems a bit better... Since I'm planning on going into games design, hopefully I can at least learn from this.

I’m going to copy and paste another comment I wrote: The tail of his shirt isn’t long anymore, it doesn’t look like a crow nor a scarecrow; in fact, both sides of his top should be longer and pointy instead of straight; there are way too much lines and colours, it’s overwhelming and they don’t even look good together; I like how his sleeves have that little design, but it’s not even the same one there is on his weapon, like what the hell; talking about the sleeves, their shape is just weird- they look like they would be on a normal shirt while the rest of his outfit looks more like a suit; his cape doesn’t stand out anymore- it’s the only red element in an outfit that already has way too much colours; why are there so many crosses- before, there was only one and it was sideways, accentuating his messy look, now they’re just weird; what’s with the pirate look? Anyway.
