    Look at players in terms and of all the things they did to give their team an edge. Russell’s rebounding, but not just that alone; it was also his quick outlet pass to start the scoring machine called the fast break. It was his shot-blocking; but blocking it inbounds, often to a teammate. Add Russell owning the paint, his uncommon leadership …. Lots of ways he gave his team an edge. No one who ever played the game did all the things Russell did. He was the very best at making defense the key to offense.

    • @richardlogan1021

      Re: Bill Russell’s stats. Blocks weren’t even recorded back in his day. But someone should try this : Count ever one of his rebound outlet passes that led to a Celtics score as half an assist; count every defensive block to a teammate that led to a Celtics score as half an assist. Then see what his assist numbers look like.

    we all know the Boston Celtics won a LOT of championships but they had never won one until Russell showed up in '57 (hired at the end of the Season) in '58 they won their first and then a record 8 STRAIGHT NBA championships, the 9th year he sat out injured and loss the championship, when he returned the following year he'd win another 3 straight for a record 11 rings. If THAT isn't dominance and G.O.A.T. status I don't know what is.

      Russell won the first year in the NBA. Second year the Celtics made it to the final. Russell had a broken bone in his foot and played below par a couple of games. St Louis won. Then 8 in a row. In *67 they lost to Wilt*s Philly team. Two more championships and out. I was there and remember it all.

    The best pitchers don't always have the best fastballs. But they have control, and several good pitches. It's the ability to consistently switch back and forth between pitches to get guys out. People understand this. But they don't always understand it in other sports. When you can switch strategies, micro-strategies or macro-strategies....that's when you're at your most dangerous. That's when your weapons become even more deadly. The greats in all sports...footbal, tennis, basketball, etc. They get it. And Bill and the Celtics were the best of their time at doing it.

      Like 3 franchises have been able to win 3 or more in a row.
      Celtics in the 60s with fewer playoff rounds as well as teams. B Russell as the widely accepted top piece.
      Bulls did it 2X with MJ being the key player
      Lakers with prime Shaq and young Kobe.
      Kobe then almost pulls another 3 peat losing in finals to Boston before going B2B.
      So we Basically have 3 greats to choose from now on individual basis as we determined they were all impacted winners. B Russell, MJ, Kobe.
      Based on individual stats and awards/accomplishments in the NBA they rank:
      1 MJ
      14X AS, 10X SCORING CHAMP, (7 straight), 3X Steal Champ, 6X NBA Champ, 11X All NBA, 84-85 ALL Rookie, 84-85 ROY, 9X ALL DEF, 3X AS MVP, 87-88 DPOY, 5X MVP, 6X FMVP, 75th Anniversary Team
      2 Kobe
      18X AS, 2X Scoring Champ, 5x NBA Champ, 15X ALL NBA, 96-97 ALL-Rookie, 12X ALL DEF, 4X ASMVP, 1X MVP, 2X FMVP, 75TH ANNIVERSARY TEAM
      3 B Russell
      12X AS, 4X TRB CHAMP, 11X NBA CHAMP, 11X ALL NBA, 5X MVP, 1X ASMVP, 1X ALL DEF, 75TH ANNIVERSARY TEAM. Would definitely have more all def if was before 69 as well. Wasn't best player after Wilt entered league.
      There are some facts to prove he wasn't the best individual player unfortunately it was MJ over him. Best individual by far would be Wilt. MJ in modern era.

      I have to give the nod to Wilt. In his own admission Bill said they would win because "they were going to run". It wasn't just Bill. He was the final piece of a great team. He would never have beaten Wilt without his team. While Wilt outplayed Bill in most categories, Bill's team outplayed their counterparts. They were both team players. Bill just happened to be on the better team. He wasn't the better player.

    • @meissner14
      @meissner14 Год назад +2

      @@kenstar3692 What stopped Wilt's teams from running? It wasn't a secret, Red made the Celtics wear black shoes, instead of white, because it made them appear to run slower. Bill Russell was the "Center" piece of his teams, not the final, and they were great teams because of the way Russell (5 MVP's) played and his leadership. Wilt (4 MVP's) played with equally great, if not better players in his day, but his game was centered on scoring, rebounding and personal stats; more of an individual style, than Bill's team oriented play.
      "I don't want to rap Wilt because I believe only Russell was better, and I really respect what Wilt did. But I have to say he wouldn't adjust to you, you had to adjust to him." ....Jerry West. Actually Wilt didn't outplay Bill in most categories, especially the ring category. Russell: 84-58 in OVERALL matchups. Record in NBA and Conference finals: Russell 90-53 Chamberlain: 48-44, that's barely .500. Record in the Decisive Game Seven Games: Russell 10-0 Chamberlain 4-5, less than .500. Statistically, Wilt was the greatest offensive beast to ever play the game, but like Russell said; players get paid to win, not play.
      Wilt was a great player and man, but as a lifelong Celts fan, I'll take Bill Russell's 11 championships over Chamberlin's 2 any day. Russell's winning record and accomplishments from high school thru the pros, taken in toto, far exceeds any other athlete's in any sport and will probably never be overtaken. I respect your choice in Chamberlin, he was certainly a fantastic player and one of the very best, but in my mind he's second best to Bill.

    • @kenstar3692
      @kenstar3692 Год назад +1

      @@meissner14 I respect your opinion as well. I think Bill was the best champion ever. However all of the categories you say Bill was better had to do with his team. Wilt outscored, out rebounded, out blocked, and out assisted Bill in pretty much every match up. If that is the case, Bill's team always outplayed Wilt's team. If you switched their teams I still think Bill would have won more than Wilt. I think that's because he wasn't as good as Wilt. He fit better because he had just enough to fit into the equation while Wilt simply had too much. Again that my humble opinion. Either way they're my top two as well and they earned it the hard way. They weren't cheated for, but against. Unlike a few on that top 10 list.
