- A podcast (as requested) on the topic of Baguazhang and the underlying principles of the system. Damo Mitchell discusses the similarities and differences between Baguazhang and Taijiquan. Further discussion then looks at the following principles of Baguazhang training:
- Yi and Qi
- The Baguazhang body
- Static postures
- Circle walking
- Common errors
The discussion covers the theory of developing the body prior to learning any of the forms of palm-changes which are usually what is demonstrated and what most people know as Baguazhgang.

This is pure gold!👏 Do you find that people that went through proper Taiji basics and reached a decent level of mobilizing the qi take lesser time to train a proper Bagua body? or the overlap isn't that accented and the two take equal time to build 'from scratch' so to speak? I would LOVE more Bagua zhang content if there's a vote going here🙏👍
Yes please continue these talks on bagua. As you have stated this is pretty niche stuff but people always go back and watch different podcasts/ videos over time. This will just add to your very informative collection of videos for people who are interested to go back to in the future
Greatly appreciated Damo.. 😁 Please talk about the single and double palm changes next. And how/where the 64 trigrams fit into the bagua practice
Thank you for an excellent and informative talk, further talks on palm changes etc. would be of great benefit to us all.
Absolute gold Damo. The bottom line sounds like sort that body then come see you.🙏
Very informative, clear and enjoyable.
I've mostly focussed on Qigong and Taiji. Bagua maybe in a few years! But this talk is great for any internal practice. And a talk that I'll come back to again and again.
Thanks Damo, very well explained, really enjoy the xing yi and bagua content, please keep it coming 😊
Agreed and would love to hear the same things in note depth on the Hsing-I body.
Would love more explanation of principles of the static palms and circle walking. I've heard detailed explanations of how to hold the body but when you described the nausea it seems there is more to learn. Feelings, effects, pitfalls
This is great for those who have experienced the mind penetration into the tissues... I wonder how it sounds to those who have not?
I find the best way to help is to do wu style internal push hands method with someone who can...that way they can target the dead space inside and help the person's mind come in. Still takes a lot of time and effort though.
Thankful for you sharing so that real internals can spread. 😊
I want the second part for single and double punches! Thank you for all of this, it's pure gold for me 😍
Extremely useful, thank you very much Damo! Please don't stop!
Loving the Bagua and Xingyi content. More please!
Awesome Damo. I've never known you waste your words and on a way these RUclips videos will be to future generations what we find from books. You are adding to the pot.
Deeply appreciated as always Damo!
Thanks Damo - very helpful and interesting - I've been learning Baguazhang basics for the past two years from another teacher - plan to work through your online course over time :) ...more Baguazhang content welcome!
Very clear. Great lecture! 🔥
Thank you so much, to experience this stuff without knowing what really knowing what was going on, that was weird :D
Excellent description and fascinating topic. Thank you! Intriguing to learn that mobilized qi can do that…
Very clear and informative.
Good stuff! Thanks Damo.
yes to part two ! with ending of exercise suggestions
Thanks Damo! Looking forward to part 2 🙏
that was very clear, would be great to hear more
I found this very helpful in formalizing a few different things I experience with bagua. Also, it has helped me, with more clarity, connect my i ching studies with the body practice
looking forward to more
A second video continuing on about hand changes would be awesome.
my teacher would tell me a story of a xingyi master who was a farmer and would open the valve to water the field and stand in san ti shi until the field was watered, then he would move to the next field to open the valve and stand again. and he did that until all fields were watered
Thanks big mouth, much appreciated and very very helpful info and guidance. Looking forward to part 2 and would love to hear anything you have to say about the legs and how to step. Thanks again
Very helpful. Would be great to see a demonstraion of the walking.
Absolutely resonated with what I’m going through. Most people move their body in circles rather than have those circles inside the body.
Keep it coming it’s rare to have someone speaking about what I’m going through. The directions thing you speak of, I feel as 6 directional balanced movement in taijiquan. Also the integration of mind and body working together… full body awareness, the now moment… I found most of this all fell in place almost at the same time and it was born from Song and then separation.
Excellent podcast. More bagua please!!
This is great! Thank you 🙏🏼
Please do more on Baguazhang, yes!
Totally love your podcasts! ❤I learn so much theoretically 😊
Fantastic Sir, thank you
My problem with settling mind into the body is that I'm not really connected but just imagining/fantasizing/all in my head. Without a patient training partner to test my connection I get lost.
can't wait until part 2!!!
You are a gift to the world, Damo. Thanks!
Awesome content. Please continue. The palm changes would be great. Also, an explanation of the static postures of the arms would be great. As you walk the circle, how do you begin to make the 8 divisions? Or, is that separate?
Thanks for this 😊
Like "in situ", the process is the place. Watching sumo, how they use the circle reminds me that circles can be super helpful. 😁✌🏻
Good talk
This is fascinating. Thanks for sharing this information. 🎉
thanks damo
Give us part 2 please!
Really enjoyed the podcast. Looking forward to the next installment.
Thanks for sharing. I did a little bagua in the past and now only Tai chi, but this talk was really great I think that most of it is definitely useful and a great explanation of the internal mechanics for tai chi too
This is really great stuff! Thank you 🙏
This is awesome, great podcast. I have a question, have you seen anyone with the internal method you describe (mind soaking through the body, filling with qi, yijinjing etc) but using traditional northern Chinese martial arts as the vehicle, instead of the big 3 internals?
Good work. Explanation was very comprehensive.
You're doing a really good job with your podcast.
If I heard correctly, you said on the one hand that some masters might be able to make do without standing practice because they had done a lot of these exercises in the past.
On the other hand, you said that you did a lot of external martial arts and external Taijiquan in your youth until you eventually started practicing martial arts internally.
Fair enough...but the following question arises in me:
What subjective/objective criteria do you use to decide when the second event happened "because of" or "despite" the first event...or when do the two events have no connection and the first one has no direct impact on the second one?
Hey Damo would u mind doing a video on what your understanding of the term kwa is
Really really enjoyed this podcast your learnings and anecdotal experiences with this art. Please continue to do many more.
So who would win in a contest at end stage development of bagua and taichi?
There was a book by a taichi guy who has since passed but he wrote in his book that peng, lu ji and an make up the four fundamental forces/energies of the i-ching. Have you found this to be true?
Excellent.
This is very helpful. Please do the next episode. 🙂
Amazing
Keep on going ❤
Useful. ☺
Hey Damo, I have a quesiton about your online training courses. Is training that increases strength/striking power beyond what "conventional training" could do included? Asking because I've heard a lot of stories of neigong/neidan practitioners developing almost superhuman strength so I'm interested.
🙏🙏🙏
❤️
would someone with a taichi body by able to build the bagua body easily?someone like Adam mizner?
Yes, I’m sure Adam could learn the Bagua internals very quickly :)
More
Are their any videos of this guy doing anything?
He seems very knowledgeable but every video is him talking without any physical demo of what he's talking about.
I mean no disrespect but other guys who know about internal arts have videos physically demonstrating what they are talking about.
Actually, vast majority on RUclips show videos of them doing stuff which proves they don’t know what they are doing 😂
You are tuning into my RUclips channel which is mostly where I put my podcasts. Podcasts, by their very nature, are a lot of talking 😁
@@LotusNeiGong Ok so you do have videos demonstrating what you are talking about cool .
Bruce Frantzis is one who knows what he is talking about and can demonstrate it.He studied with some of the best master's in China during his time there .
Thanks for getting back to me.
@@brittscott4673 look around and you may find something :)
I’m surprised someone else understands. You would like hesychasm.
I don't understand why this inner door information is freely talked about now. In the 80s you had to be a disciple. The "fundamental aspects" were always hidden. I'm very grateful, but times have really changed.
Because things were so hidden, nobody knew them and so they became lost! 😁
What are your thoughts on Yoga nidra. I do a lot of meditation but Yoga Nidra opened me up to a new dimension between mind, and body. Thanks for the info🙏
What are your views on the 5 Tibetan Rites? Are they worth doing? Thanks
You don't need Damo to answer this question. Do these exercises with as much focus and commitment you will experience the amazing benefits of this set of movements. Although a great set of movements to do they are not bagua.
The first style of bagua I studied was rLUNG TA bagua, a Tibetan style translated as wind-horse bagua based on Bon Po (pre Buddhist) principles including the use of sound (chanting) while walking. I then had drop these principles when I started learning Cheng style bagua, point being don't mix styles or methodologies keep it pure.
"It takes decades, not 6 months" just the fundamental of circelwalking, omg😮
Are you familiar with John Painter in Texas?
I am familiar with him yes, chatted super briefly online with him but never met him :)
wtf are you drivelling about 😂 cyclical nonsense
You would need to be practicing Baguazhang for some time to understand sorry 🙏🏻
It's not the move you make, it's how you make the move. The 'bagua' energies are naturally within the human body. A good teacher will help you discover the bagua. I'm a 45 year practitioner. Don't push Don't pull: release! The primordial mind must be discovered.
