I love this discussion… I find the quality of touch is defined by having no intention of your own, I.e. no output or running away and no mind of doing anything, this allows you to feel their intention. I found this has developed into borrowing, a continual biofeedback loop. I apply the 4 ounces of pressure (asking) which creates resistance and output which is immediately taken and used whilst still asking to receive more for use…. Without break during any of it in a continuous silky rubberness , so the pressure doesn’t change and what you do goes below their awareness. This quality also produces stickiness where they stick to you, you don’t need to try and stick to them, that in fact takes away stickiness due to having an intention of your own…. All this is a feeling rather than doing what you think needs to be done, which is not being in the now. I’m trying to teach joining, but that won’t happen till they eliminate intention and are doing everything naturally…. But yeah, joining is like becoming one, you don’t try to move the other person but rather they move with you…. Your energy joins their energy and becomes one energy. Woo woo is just stuff people rubbish as they don’t understand it. It’s not woo woo when you can do it.
So steps are: 1. Opening 2. Mind flows into nerves 3. Flesh is "mobilised" 4. When contact is made with opponent the nervous systems "connect" 5. Because the two systems are "one" the force is neutralized? Do i have that right? If not, am i missing a step or did i misinterpret a step? 😅 Also, thank you so much for these in depth topics! 🙏🏻❤
Right :) Except that between 2 and 3, the flesh must be separated from the bone. The classical Taiji phrase is "bones up, flesh down". If the flesh is not separated from the bone, the Qi will not sink. If the Qi does not sink, it cannot be mobilized.
Sometimes we are starved for “information”, as in “What am I missing here?” Since qi contains information-on many levels-a proper qigong foundation enhances one’s capacity to be informed by the unexpectedly deep, rich, qi-networked-multiverse.
I enjoy Paul Vunak‘s training method for transferring complex techniques to application: First Isolate the phenomenon, then do it out of an energy drill (he uses Bong Sao from Win Chun, Chi Sao from Tai Chi and one from Phillipino Martial arts). Being able to do it in movement, from the energy drill, feeling the other person and not scripting the timing is essential. Then, when the timing and feel is built up, increase the intensity, by isolating a fight scenario (basically controlled sparring). Then one can again increase the intensity until one can apply it in a real fight. Eventually (hopefully) one will be able to execute the technique, whenever one gets the appropriate energy from the opponent. Feeling the energy and building the technique into our system has been done before, so now it should just be auto-pilot. But having said that, I am not able to pull of these wuwu-energy-stunts, so if Damo says it’s difficult, I believe it ;-)
amazing explaination as always, i also thought about long time ago to make a video about it, now i can share yours :D as i experienced all this phenomena it was more about how i can i use it as a healing method because its totally pointless just to do it as an impressive effect .. and when we meet and talked about it, and you said its all about the feeling and matching the same frequency , i had some differnet experience from the russians lubki and systema as they focus on different things and i saw crazy things what i couldnt explain at that time. you suggested me to go to mark but i was already more interessted to follow your neigong way.
So I now understand why you could make me bounce around without contact...decades ago in Cardiff park...I was syncing with you (as I do) but I had no internal skill to process the information...
Yes, and as far as I see it, the vast majority of the empty force phenomena is based upon this. This is really what the distinction between ‘sensitive’ and ‘not sensitive’ people really is, at least within this kind of setting :) Fun times in Cardiff park!
Stick, adhere, join, follow... sort of an open curious exchange between the nerves, muscles, and bones as the sinews learn to communicate from qi flow in huang changing? . 😊 I like how you explained it. I have like, zero combat skills, I never spar, only spa.
Also you talk of the stretch/separation… when you get it, your movement feels different, almost opposite to normal movement…. Movement through separation rather than compaction.
Thanks, makes clear some of the misconceptions out there. There appears to be lots of people who say yes I can feel the chi, move the chi down a stick bla bla.. they probably belong to a wider group of people who are agreeable to the point as if they already know what you're talking about when they in fact know very little..
Now my question is going to sound facetious, but I certainly don’t mean it that way, I‘m actually curious: If Qi is such an important aspect of anything we do - say fighting in competitions, or making money - how come that the west has been dominating in these fields so much (MMA, Economics), even without a targeted Qi building system as is prevalent (or at least known) in the east? Do they also use Qi, but name it and cultivate it differently? (Say a boxer) Or is it that Qi is just one factor the east gets obsessed about, forgetting to cultivate the rest (like being punched in the face a lot…)? Or I guess the argument of a lot of cultivators would be that they could fight in competitions but are just not interested (which I buy from some, but not from others…)
It’s not a facetious question, it’s just a bit of a pointless one. Simply because the development of Qi is not needed for these things. Why is Qi cultivated to either make money or win competitions? A boxer does not need Qi to strike and neither does a businessman need Qi to make money? The cultivation of Qi is for those who wish to explore the internal arts and the examples you give are not internal arts.
So,if you are interested in self defense, you better learn some box or muay tai or whatever external method aswell, and keep taijiquan for inner cultivation only, right? Thanks@@LotusNeiGong
Do you reconcile the concepts of Atman with Anatta with the "self" being the Jiva? So what we perceive as the self (Jiva) is not the eternal part of us, right?@LotusNeiGong
One of your better lectures IMHO. Thx.🙏

Great summation, I teach this in Aikido, one nervous system, thank you, Will
This is a good attempt to describe the biology mechanics. Well done.
That made a lot of sense. I have been thinking about this for a while now and it was good to get your view on it. Thanks Damo.
I love your talks Damo. They are soothing. Conscious awareness
36:27 - “Why “the f***” has this brand new person got empty force?!” 😂😂😂
Thank you for explaining this. Much respect & appreciation ❤
I think you have touched on this topic with great sensitivity and clarity 😉
So steps are:

2. Mind flows into nerves
3. Flesh is "mobilised"
4. When contact is made with opponent the nervous systems "connect"
5. Because the two systems are "one" the force is neutralized?

@@cal.5081 what does "the qi doesn't not sink" mean exactly? Sink into what/where? Is it just metaphor or is it really sinking?

The neuroscientific explanations Damo mentions are described in my book ANOTHER SELF (but that may not be what you meant).
