    Why do Arcade games look so much better? even after years they still hold up.

    • @RandomisedGamingYouTube
      @RandomisedGamingYouTube  6 лет назад +44

      Arcade hardware at the time was generally much more powerful than home consoles, so on the whole they have aged much better. That's not to say all games did, Sega really pulled out the stops for this one and it wasn't until the release of Rogue Squadron II on Gamecube in 2001, that we had a better looking Star Wars game.

      @@RandomisedGamingRUclips. Saying the home console's were less powerful than their arcade counterparts is a huge understatement, if you wanted a console that had the same type of graphics as Star Wars trilogy arcade, it would cost about $5.000 or more. Adjusted to inflation, would be about $15.000. It wasn't until about the game cube xbox and PS2 era until graphics came even close. Maybe even leaning toward 1st Gen. PS3 Xbox 360 games.

    When I was in high school i worked a summer job at a small amusement park that had one of these cabinets. I played it so much that eventually I'd memorized every pattern and could beat it on a single credit.
    Most important was identifying which enemies are capable of damaging you (not every enemy in the game will shoot and hit you, even if you ignore them) and prioritizing those. After that, it's just down to speed and accuracy to rack up as many points as possible. I had the high score on that cabinet for years, well after I'd gone to college.

    • @RandomisedGamingYouTube
      @RandomisedGamingYouTube  3 года назад +3

      SEGA in the late 90s and early 00s really did some of the best sound design going and it's something a lot of modern games don't do well. As the music now is often throw away or licensed tracks that don't really fit that well. In this arcade version SEGA perfectly matched the film music to all the action sections as the game plays out.

    Man! I used to work at a movie theater and we had this in the lobby. I’d play it on my break which lasted exactly 30 minutes....just barely enough time to crush through the entire thing. Had it down to a science and had my name on like 5 of the top 10 scores. The day they took it out, some dude came in and crushed my top score......‘twas a sad day. Great game! Aaaaaand I could do it on one credit!!

    Amazing how quaint these graphics look nowadays, yet they still capture the look and feel of the Star Wars movie. I loved this game back in the day. I used to work near a bar that had this machine; I'd go there every day for my lunch hour and drop a buck or two on it. I got so good that I got close to beating the entire thing with one credit (think I did once too).
    It's a pity Sega has never released this for modern consoles or PC. It's one of the best rail shooters ever made.

    Back when I was 13, my family and I went on a holiday in Mallorca for 2 weeks. Next door to the hotel was an arcade, and it was the first thing to open in the morning, I spent a few hours in there each morning before things got going. By the end of the 2 weeks, I could finish this game on one coin, it required a bit of luck on the final death star mission and I found doing the Endor, Yavin and then Hoth mission in that order would give me a 90% + shield for the final mission which was just enough. Lord knows how much it cost me (or my parents) to reach that level, but I recall using the same machine a few months later back home and I was a legend of the arcade for that evening :)
