    Awesome channel. I just turned on my new pit boss for the first time today & tried grilling some burgers. Wish I would have seen your video first. I tried 400F per the owner’s manual; they cooked OK but didn’t get browned on the outside. Will be checking out your channel first for advice in the future👍🏻

      Thanks for watching! They are actually flat on one side and have raised grates on the other so you can use them either way whether you want sear marks or full contact. Hope that helps! amzn.to/3WA0zEz

    I find that my pit boss loses too much temp if the cover is open. For example, if i get it up tp 450, and i leave the cover open to sear, the temp drops to 350 in a few minutes. How do i retain temperature with the cover open?
    Great channel by the way. I'm making my way through all of your uploads. Please keep producing more content, thanks!

    • @madbackyard
      @madbackyard  9 месяцев назад +4

      Great question! Since we are using DIRECT heat to cook the burgers, I’m not really concerned what the internal air temperature of the pit boss is. In fact, when I made these I don’t think my controller ever said much higher than about 275 because I had the lid open so often as well. That’s why when grilling/searing etc with direct heat you really should use an infrared thermometer to track when the griddle surface is hot enough if using a flat surface like I recommend. If you leave the setting on high, much like a hot burner on the stove the griddle will stay hot even with the lid open. Hope that helps. Thanks for watching!

    Would you say a pellet grill can grill a burger as quickly as a propane grill? Obviously time to heat up takes a little longer, how long did it take before being able to put the patty to grill after heating up?

    • @madbackyard
      @madbackyard  4 месяца назад

      No it cannot. Propane is always going to be faster and stronger when your goal is direct heat for grilling only. This model has a direct heat option that lets you open the flame broiler for direct access to the flames of the fire pot. Many pellet grills do not have this feature so make sure to check if that is something that is important for you to have on your pellet grill. Thanks for watching!

    When you are heating the PB to high, do you leave the flame grate closed and the lid closed ?

    • @madbackyard
      @madbackyard  9 месяцев назад +1

      I just leave both open. It still works fine to get the grill grates or cast iron nice and hot.

    A burger press is the answer, put your meat in and press a perfect patty. Season and grill. Perfect every time. The pit boss will do the rest with the flame plate open.

    • @madbackyard
      @madbackyard  9 месяцев назад

      Yes, they do make forming the patties faster, especially if you have a large crowd to feed!!

  • @zephyrus7258

    Your the only person ive seen actually using the direct flame feature. Most people are smoking the burgers for about an hour at 225.

    • @madbackyard
      @madbackyard  15 дней назад

      You can do this to start but I like my burgers finished with high heat otherwise they just have too much of a meatloaf/meatball texture to me.

  • @grouponful
    @grouponful 9 месяцев назад +4

    You didn't want to smoke it?

    • @madbackyard
      @madbackyard  9 месяцев назад +4

      You absolute could if you wanted to…I would start the pit boss as low as possible on just the smoke setting, or even better, keep it turned off and just use a smoke tube. Smoke them for an hour or so to get some smoke flavor before searing like in the video. I would still sear or else you’re going to end up with basically gray baked hamburgers which won’t be as appetizing IMO.
      Another option is to smoke a few cups of beef tallow ahead of time. Keep some smoked tallow on hand to quickly add extra smoke flavor to whatever you are searing with it.
      Thanks for watching!! 👍

  • @galenscott9327
    @galenscott9327 9 месяцев назад +2

    Why bother cooking on the PB if you don’t want the smoke? Might as well use a gas grill.

    • @madbackyard
      @madbackyard  9 месяцев назад +5

      Valid point, however not everyone has multiple grills, AND if I've already been smoking something on my Pit Boss, say some veggies or potatoes or another kind of meat to go with my burgers, I don't really want to fire up a second grill. I'd rather just switch over to high heat, throw my grill grates or a cast iron pan on and make the burgers on the Pit Boss too. Thanks for watching!
