Thank you for this explanation, otherwise, I find very difficult to explain to many christians everytime, why we go to confess our sins to a priest.
if only priests should preach and educate Catholics the way you do there were no catholics who get out of t church and find answers to other denominations..i am one of them yet i can't totally get rid of attending masses..

We go to confession because human beings are sinners.And there is God.He is just on His judgement.
Im catholic and still have doubt and found this area hard, I'm a type who confess to God even though I know that I should confess to a Priest.
It doesn’t matter what we feel comfortable with, it’s about what God commanded us to do. He instituted sacrament of reconciliation.

It's not easy to confess sins directly to a priest.
Confession is cleansing. After I go to confession, my heart feels lighter, my mind at peace. I love hearing, “ I absolve you from your sins, in The Name of the Father and of The Son and of The Holy Spirit”. “Amen”.
What if your not mentally aware of what your shortcomings are.

No humility in confessing straight to God, but voicing your sins in front of a priest is very humbling.it is in talking them out loud and someone hearing it that it isn't a secret anymore and it actually comes out of the body via my voice.

Fr. William Nicholas I'm a lifelong Catholic and I go to confession fairly regularly. I was watching another You Tube channel in which the priest said you only have to go to confession once a year if you have a mortal sin, otherwise you never have to go. Then someone pointed out that this is what Canon Law says. Seems like this is in conflict with the catechism § 2042. Can you clarify this?
Surely.
To begin with, people are generally uncomfortable with obligations. The result is that they will look at such things as Canon Law, the Catechism or the Precepts of the Church to determine the ABSOLUTE requirement for an obligation so as to do the absolute MINIMUM required in such things as Confession and Fasting/Abstinence (to which Jesus said: "After you have done the minimum, say 'we are worthless servants' because we have only done what we were obliged to do." - Luke 17:7-10). They will even misquote their upbringing, saying such things as "the nuns taught me..."
That said: The Precept of the Church (featured in this video) obliges Catholics to confess their sins once a year AT LEAST. There is no mention of "IF", whether you have mortal sins or not.
When we go to Confession ALL sins must be confessed, nothing must be deliberately held back. This is why we must do a serious Examination of Conscience, so as to remember our sins so we can make a full Confession.
If you have MORTAL SIN, you must confess before you receive Communion, because you should not receive Communion if you are AWARE you are in a state of mortal sin.
Given that -- this does not mean that you have to go to Confession ONLY once a year, but AT LEAST once a year (most Catholics go a few times a year). This also does not mean that you must confess ONLY your mortal sins, but rather you must confess ALL sins, and ESPECIALLY your mortal sins.
In short, Mortal or Venial (and we must stop being so legalistic about it), a serious mature Catholic (who is not overly scrupulous - the sacrament is not there to feed a compulsion) you should go to Confession whenever you are sure you have sin and confess all sins on your conscience, without deliberately holding back.

Excellent presentation, you are one of a few Catholic Priests that I have encountered that can preach using scripture and tie it into Catholic beliefs. Most priests that I am familiar with act like they have never read the Written Word of God, but majored in the Catechism. Thank you Father.
Thanks for your comment. I always like to remind Catholics that there are two things every Catholic should have in their home (hopefully on the living room coffee table) - The Bible, and the Catechism of the Catholic Church.
One caveat is needed here. The Catholic faith does not come from the bible (the written word of God). The bible is the message of salvation, i.e., how God has intervened in human history to save man from the slavery of sin. The oral word of God or Apostolic Tradition is how "the Church, in her doctrine, life and worship, perpetuates and transmits to every generation all that she herself is, all that she believes." (Catechism of the Catholic Church #78) It is *not* Sacred Scripture as it is distinct from Tradition, though they are bound together and work towards the same goal. (CCC #80) The Gospel was handed on in two ways - orally and in writing. (CCC #76). We even find reference to the oral word of God as what the Apostles preached. (1 Thes 2:13) Jesus commanded the Apostles to preach the Gospel and if one believes it and is baptized he will be saved. (Mk 16:15-16) The Catechism is the current expression of this oral word of God or Tradition. It is not the complete Tradition but presents the basic doctrine and practice of the Church. The canon of Scripture was not fixed by the Church until 382AD (Council of Rome) so it was impossible for it to be the origin of the faith.

For Absolution to happen there needs to be an honest confession with a Firm Purpose of Amendment, and the blessing of absolution. The priest has his part, but the penitent has theirs. If one fails to do their part the Sacrament does not take place. So, in the role of the shepherd, if the priest has a clear indication that the person is not making a sincere confession or keeps returning (and frequently) to confess the same sin over and over again - indicating that there is no firm purpose of amendment - then he has a duty to withhold absolution. It would be rare, but any priest worth his salt would not allow someone to misuse the Sacrament. He is as much of a shepherd in the Confessional as he is out of it.

Cuz then Jesus tells us to not call r brothers fools, but then he calls the Pharisees fools, as the Bible does not contradict itself, Jesus met our brother's, obviously the Pharisees were the sons of Satan and not are brothers so therefore they were fools💯

Catholics DO read their Bible (all of it); and nowhere does it say, "Call no man father." It reads, "Call no man YOUR father."
Sometimes I wonder if some non-Catholics ever read their Bible as the "Call no man father" line appears to be the only passage they have read (and they STILL misquote it.)

but you see how were brainwashed, I do believe this is spiritual, with pastors that teaches this to us growing up, there narcissistic people that literally pervert scripture, just like the Bible says, we're taught as Protestants, that the Catholics r the ones perverting scripture, when it's the Protestants 💯 they can't never make up their mind on how to interpret the Bible.
and I thank God that my dad jumped from church to church when I was growing up, cuz I grew up and I stopped going to church over this and I became an atheist. I'm a Believer now and now I know what it means to be reborn again but I'm still looking for a church to be baptized to be reborn again. I'm afraid some people do not ..... or believe in not confessing to a priest their sins is as follows:
1. We tend to live in a more pagan society, where the individual comes first and God comes in 2nd.
And if.....and only if......I let God in, it is on my terms.
2. People's egos and sense of entitlement.......that they "know" better.
In closing, I hope I'm wrong, but time will tell.
What power did God give priests to forgive our sins? The reason we dont confess our sins is because only Jesus stands between us and God. He is our lawyer and we pray to him to forgive us for our sins.

Can a non-Catholics Christians to confess to a priest?
Only Catholics can receive the Sacraments, but nothing bans anyone from talking to a priest.
What I have never understood about our religion is why does God still hold original sin over us we weren't on the planet when that occurred.
Original Sin is not an action committed, but the state of fallen Humanity in which every person is born. Jesus wiped that out when he died on the Cross. However, the effect of that is NOT passive (as some non-Catholic denominations would believe). We must ACTIVELY embrace the cross for that effect.
We do that Sacramentally in Baptism. In Baptism we Sacramentally join Christ in his Death and Resurrection, also in anticipation of our own (which is why the symbols of Baptism are also present at a funeral). In Baptism, the old fallen humanity is replaced by the New Humanity redeemed by Christ, and all previous actively committed sins, if any, are washed away as well.
Our Free Will is still in tact, however, and our ability to choose for or against doing God's will. Ergo, we still sin, and subsequently, post-Baptism, turn to the Sacrament of Confession for forgiveness. Only those who have put on the New Redeemed Humanity in Baptism are eligible for Confession.
A little complicated, I know, but ours is not a faith for dunderheads. ;-)

Laura. The short answer is "no" for mortal sin. Lessor sin can be forgiven in other ways, yet seek the Sacramental forgiveness that comes from confessing to the Priest. I struggled with confession for a long time but after returning to the Church find it a real blessing.
Being a former Catholic, and having gone to 12 years of Catholic school, I will never understand why Catholics have to confess their sins to a priest. When you sin, you are offending God. Therefore, only God not a priest, can absolve you! How can a human priest who sins just like the rest of us, have the "power" to absolve and forgive your sins? I can tell you stories of what priests have said to me in the confessional! One time I went to confession and the priest was sleeping so soundly in the confessional, that you could hear him snoring! Not to mention the pedophilia that has been occurring in the Catholic church now and has for decades! Yet, these guys have the "power" to forgive us from sin? Get real!

But, not understanding why does not mean the Church is wrong. 2000 years of existence knows just a little bit more about God's will than any one of us, although that is the temptation. All the rituals that are performed in the Catholic Church, are man made not biblical! The Catholic Church needs to listen to what the bible says, not the Vatican!
The Catholic Church existed over four hundred years before the bible was finalized as we know it. If it's man-made things you avoid, then I assume you don't stop at red lights because they are man-made rules. You are not a "former" Catholic. You are a "recovering" Catholic.
BTW -- The concept of being "born again" is based on the misunderstanding of Nicodemus in John's Gospel. Jesus corrected that idea of being "born again" because it is based on a mistaken notion of what Jesus is all about. Being born once is quite enough. You need to be born "of water and the Holy Spirit." The fact that you call yourself "born again" shows, unequivocally that you completely misunderstand what the Bible says. Time to come back to the Catholic Church. It's the Church that Jesus founded, and he founded a Church, not a Bible.

Jesus used the Bible as the foundation for the first church called the Universal Church or the Catholic Church. Many of of Jesus' apostles wrote numerous books of The New Testament. Over the centuries various popes not Jesus, have added the various rituals which is today's Catholic Church. Why does the Catholic Church, forbid priests from marrying? Many of the apostles were married. This rule is not biblical. A pope in the 12th century made this ruling, not Jesus! The Catholic Church is more concerned with these papal, man made rituals, than the Bible! Reverend, you sound like you care more about what the Vatican says rather than what the Bible says. Salvation not the sacraments, being a good Catholic, Protestant etc.get you into heaven.
In the Bible Jesus told Peter "You are Rock and on this Rock I will build my CHURCH" (not my Bible) "I will give you the keys to the kingdom of heaven. Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven" (Matthew 16:18-19)
Also, in the Acts of the Apostles the council of Jerusalem steered a course for the Church that Jesus did not dictate, but was accepted because Jesus promised that God the Holy Spirit would always guide the Church in all things. So we must assume that when the Church chose to require priests to be celibate, the Holy Spirit, which Jesus promised, was the source of that development.
You say you believe in the Bible and all things Biblical, but you don't accept, nor do you believe, the ongoing ramifications of the Bible and its words, not the least of which is that the Church, and in particular the CATHOLIC Church has seniority over the Bible in being Christ's instrument on Earth, because without the Church there would be no Bible.
Yeah sorry I can't believe that because when he died and the veil was split it gave US direct access to God. So when I ask God to let my sins be known I am also able to ask him to forgive my sins as I have forgiven those who sinned against me. Just as he had taught us when they asked him how we should pray. So if I pray and say forgive me of my sins as I have forgiven those who sinned against me. Why should I also have to go to a priest and say forgive me for I have sinned when I already asked God to forgive me.
Jesus did not make YOU the direct conduit to God. JESUS is that conduit and he left the CHURCH to act in his name, including the forgiveness of sins (John 20:23). You have to read the ENTIRE Bible, not just the parts that suit your limited understanding of Christianity. It's a big book. There's a lot in it.

And if we have to go through a priest why did jesus teach us to pray and say forgive my sins if we need a priest to do that for us
@@adramelek1000 The Old Testament also has prayers that ask God to forgive sins (such as the 51st Psalm). Yet the High Priest was still the only intermediary for the forgiveness of sins on the day of Atonement, per the Book of Leviticus. So, yes, Jesus gave us the Our Father, which, like many other prayers in the Bible, ask God to forgive our sins, but he still established the Church on the Apostles (who appointed deacons and presbyters - i.e. priests) who had the specific authority given to them to bind or hold bound someone's sins. So it makes sense that if one must confess (also, many examples in the Bible, starting with John the Baptist) one would confess to one who has the authority to forgive sins given to them by Christ in and through the ministry of the Church.
If anything, the purpose of the veil being torn in the Temple, indicates that the Temple is not the only location where sins are forgiven, as on the Day of Atonement, but that forgiveness can occur anywhere confession is made AND forgiveness is granted per the authority granted the Church by Christ. The veil being torn does not mean we all have "direct access" to God, as if all of us now have the dignity of High Priest (that is only held by Christ). Rather it parallels the rending of the garments of the High Priest at Jesus' trial. The High Priest tore his garments when he thought Jesus' had blasphemed. Now God, in the Temple, is rending his garments at Jesus death.
If your referring to John 20:23 where he told his apostles they can forgive sins it was a special gift he gave them. I don't remember reading where any apostolic authority being passed down to others. Even Peter never said he was in charge of the other apostles. Yes they looked at him like a leader but don't remember him saying he was above the others. But I'm no expert and don't have the new testament memorized so I may have missed where that authority to forgive sins was passed down from the authority Jesus gave his apostles.
@@adramelek1000 The Laying on of Hands is done quite frequently in the Acts of the Apostles and is spoken of in the Epistles as the act of conferring the Apostolic Authority to their successors as well as delegating it to the presbyters and deacons. By your reasoning, the Church came to an end with the death of the last Apostle, in which case no preacher has any authority, not even you to question any Church practice. As it is, the authority continues. The only thing that ended with the death of the Apostles is any NEW revelation from God.
Besides, the clarification you are asking for is not something the Bible can provide, nor does it need to. Jesus did not establish a Bible; Jesus established a Church, from which emerged the Bible as we know it, as well as the Sacraments as we celebrate them, including Confession. Therefore, the authority of the Church (including how the Bible is interpreted) is a higher authority than that of the Bible. The practice of Confessing to a priest was already in existence when the New Testament was written; nor does the Bible New or Old Testaments dictate practices to the Church. Rather they reflect practices already taking place, and the authority the Church has in exercising them.
Besides, if it is that necessary to have EVERYTHING spelled out in the Bible for it to be valid then it doesn't say much for the Church being founded by Christ, or of our being made in God's image and likeness, does it!
Confessing now-a-days to a priest?? Already, anywhere one is, there is no privacy anymore anywhere. I think confessing directly to God is the way to go. It is a special direct spiritual highway to him this way.
We always prefer to do it our own way. The fact that God through both Holy Scriptures and His Holy Church has instructed us to do differently seems of little importance.
