Perhaps the best advice I recall that given to me was that " Don't let your shame prevent you from coming back to Jesus. That shame is proof that your heart still belongs with Jesus and He wants you back very much."
I too got back into the church this year, it's been transformational through the grace of God to say the least. There's a ton of good resources online regarding sins (especially those that list out mortal sins, which we must confess!) if you still need some guidance. God bless and I'm happy you are back at confession!
Went to confession yesterday after 16 yrs of being away. First thing the priest said was, "Welcome back." Thank you for this video, Father. It helped me a great deal. God bless you.
Confession takes a load of your soul. Don’t go to a therapist go to confession. It will save you money and it’s free. Just go. Your find a priest as a gentle lamb. And the joy Of being back in God good graces. Just go.
I disagree on one point. Psychotherapy is not always the best (or only) solution for problems. The focus is exactly the opposite of where faith would take you. God urges us to look towards him, ignore self, and let his will rule our lives. Psychotherapy puts the focus entirely on self. People become obsessed with themselves as the most important thing in the universe. There is no thought whatsoever of God or the beneficial role God has in fixing life’s problems. I’ve heard that Catholics who regularly go to confession tend to be psychologically healthier than most people. I think it’s because so much of what people struggle with is directly related to sin. Ultimately, sin is something that causes a lot of damage (both personal and throughout society). So, while I’m not trying to say that people should avoid psychotherapy, I do think there’s an over reliance on it as the best solution to big problems. It’s not wrong to seek psychological help, but it should at least be balanced with reliance on God.
Agreed! Literally, I feel so full of joy and light and at peace, words don't describe it. I use to never go now I go anywhere from every two weeks to twice a year. it would appear the world has created band-aides for not going to church. Therapists Iv gotten the best advice from priests Ill sneak my question in at the end of confession. The best therapist I saw said what a priest said is take control of your thoughts and think and speak of what you want in your life. I see people do these accountability coaches or weight watchers. The church was the accountability coach having to face your congregation makes it harder to sin. Kinda like now that smoking is illegal in most places and not accepted makes it much harder to smoke. If you smoke the fear of ridicule or backlash make it less desirable to do.
I have found confession to be one of the greatest gifts. Not only can we receive forgiveness for sins committed, we can also receive the grace to avoid sin in the first place.
How grateful I am for your guidance on what not to confess. I can’t count the number of times I have confessed what I thought is the sin of anger and being judgmental, or critical of others. Thanks so much!
Amen to that! I’m sitting better than I thought! I didn’t have to pack a lunch after all! Ha! With seriousness, what an amazing gift! So grateful! God is Brilliant! Cathleen
@Cathy, since listening to Fr. Nicholas' video, it sounds like, 'just the facts, ma'am', but I don't want him to say, 'really? that's all you've got after 35 years?' I would be speechless!
I was on the verge of leaving the Catholic Church because of the cruelty I encountered in the parish priest. I couldn't stand it anymore. He did everything possible to humiliate people, including me. I hated him, and I hated the church because of him ( and I was a convert who clearly decided to become Catholic). This has restored my faith, and my sense of well-being. Thank you, Father William.
Skylark Don’t ever hesitate to reach out to the Bishop if a Priest is causing any kind of harm. Also don’t hesitate to go to another parish - the priest are human and far from perfect- I’ve had my fair share of run ins with them. I use to feel “little” next to them- now I feel I do have the right to say something if they are doing something harmful.
Wow. I have learned something new. I usually confess my anger because it is a direct cause for my failure to forgive. Thank you father Nicholas. God bless you as you continue to impart your knowledge.
I love that clarification on Judging people. So many people are confused by that as the Bible talks about judging people in some parts and later it talks about not judging people elsewhere. People don't realize languages didn't have so many words to use as we have today in the English language. When the Bible talks about judging, you have to look at the context of the scripture as it could potentially mean several different things as Fr Nicholas mentions.

My sincerest thanks to you Father for making these videos. I am trying to be a better Catholic and person on a day by day basis and these explanations help me tremendously in that regard. These kinds of calm, well thought out explanations are easy to understand and truly do clear up possible confusions in my mind and I'm sure in the minds of many Catholics over the years. Thank you for your efforts and please keep up the great work. It's very much appreciated by those of us who seek a stronger level of faith and hopefully, for those out there who may have little or no hope in a better way of life, or who may be in search of that path through life. Amen Fr William! Always good to be back after 1 year, and listen to your Holy videos. And this one is from 2016! I wasn't on YT yet. Thank you Fr Bill. 3 Hail Mary's as everyday.
Father Nicholas, thank you so much for your wonderful videos. I was welcomed into the Church in 1998 after four years of searching and study for the Church Jesus began. I felt like I was finally home, and the Eucharist was the most awesome experience in my spiritual life. I'm ashamed to say that after a few years, I stopped attending the Catholic Church. My wife didn't like the Church as we both grew up in a non-denominational church. Her brother had become a minister and pastor in a church similar to the one we used to attend, and our daughter and her family are also going there. I started attending this church for family reasons I guess, and it's a good church.... but, it will never be able to replace what I experienced in the Catholic Church. I've never been as close to God in my life as I was in the Church which has the Body and Blood of Christ, that has the successor of Peter as it's overseer in the office of the Pope. The communion of Saints, the Blessed Mother...etc... I just don't know how to get back without causing a major traumatic rift in my family. I pray God will lead me in the right direction and hopefully He can deal with their hearts ahead of time, before I let them know how I feel. Thank you Father and God bless you.
Father I love you for teaching me this...everyone says don't commit sin ,and go to confession..but they never gives homilies on how to confess or what is sin except on the occasion before holy communion that happened in the long past
I sometimes confess my temptations, but not as my main reason for going to confession. If i have to go to confession, and if I’ve also been battling intense temptations, I will mention it as well.
Thank you for explaining that the priest is bound by the seal of the confessional and he must keep what is said in the confessional in absolute confidentiality and the importance of not confessing the sins of other people. I cannot unspeak the words that I have spoken but I have had to eat them on many occasions. A day at a time..
Thank you, Father for these statements of how to express our sins and what not to express. I found this very helpful. I am a woman religious and I wonder if you would have suggestions For a religious sister. Blessings and Peace on your teachings of this sacrament. Sr. Brigid
I always prepare well before going for confession, and always before I begin, my tears starts flowing down my face and it takes sometime for me to calm down. I feel bad for the priest because he has to wait till I could start my confession. Help me father, how do I overcome this?
All I can advise is: don't try to overcome it. Just don't lose yourself in it. Take a deep breath, get a hold (or get a grip!) and say it (that's why I advise don't go into excessive background or narration. That's when I've noticed more people getting emotional.) Hopefully the priest will be patient with you. If not (or seems not) just remember he's in there for a while and has seen and will see many people, and probably has nothing to do with you.
Sins are a daily cycle in voice and mind. Thank you for the clear definition. Confession....Penance helps clean our minds and souls for the start of a new day. In Jesus Christ’s Name... Amen.
This was so helpful! I have been examining my conscience for the past 24 hours and more as I prepare to go to confession after over a decade of not going. This answered a lot of my questions and relieved many of my preconceived "hang-ups".
11:13 Father I’ve been to multiple Confessions at my home Church where more than one Priest has failed to pray this Absolution upon finishing my confession. They’ll just say God has forgiven your sins or a variation thereof and sometimes not even given me a penance unless I specifically requested it. I brought it up the first time it happened and was basically told he was the Priest and knew it was still a valid confession so be on my way.
Alas, some priests can grow a bit lax after years of hearing confessions. Just thank God they do not grow that lax in saying Mass (wait a minute!). Don't have any doubt about the validity of the Sacrament, however, if they don't even do the blessing in the name of the Father, Son & Holy Spirit, then I would ask them to please utter the Prayer of Absolution, because it is through the words of the minister that the Church bestows forgiveness according to Christ's command (ergo "through the ministry of the Church, may God grant you pardon and peace, etc., etc."). But, when all is said and done, there is great benefit to multiple priests out there and one does not have to return to the same priest the next time they go to Confession.
So what’s left? I have to Lol…those are some of the things that I was going to say in my next confession, Im thinking about coming back to the church. I don’t abuse myself except for food maybe, I don’t have impurity, I’m in menopause lol. I try to follow the golden rule. I guess my biggest challenge is tending to believe in an eye for an eye…yeah I’ll go with that in confession.
I heard a priest once say that within a few months of getting jurisdiction to hear confessions, he heard all the sins imaginable and lots that were not!
I thought once Christ Died on the cross and the curtain to the tabernacle was torn down the middle, that that meant one could go to God ourselves. No more sacrifice or burnt offerings. Where would I go to understand why I must confess my sins to a priest. You went on to answer some of my questions, thank you.
If you go to confession often enough, you shouldn't have too much of a problem confessing. When a priest askes me a specific question I give the specific answer. Many times he will not ask for details, but if he does, then I will give it. I always try to remember it is Christ on the other side of the screen. I always do anonymous. Because when a priest askes me questions I can more easily answer honestly and fully. When I can't see his face I find myself more fully open to explain myself without hesitation. And of course, a proper examination beforehand.
Great video, Father - thank you! I'll try to watch part one and the remainder of part 2 asap. But I have heard that confessing one's temptations (which, sure enough, aren't sins) can lead to growing in humility. (Unfortunately I can't remember the source, but it may have been advice by a saint who practiced that.)
I am in a difficult position because I can honestly repent and strive to avoid all that the Church calls sinful with one major exception. I want to be close to the Lord and my faith is important to me. My pastor has advised me to confess the best I am able and trust in God's mercy for the rest. I had stayed away from the Sacrament for a couple years based on fear and unworthiness. I am sad to think of millions who stay away from the Church over a moral issue and I hope that God is continuing to provide grace for them.
We are all sinners and I thank Father for his guidance, but i get stuck on what to confess and I know I am not perfect..My husband and I get on well, with maybe a few differences of opinion..I really don't want to make up sins.I attend Mass more than once a week and say my rosary daily..
Father, will God forgive me? I mocked His Holy name and I'm very very very willing to change. I do not struggle with any other worse sin than taking God's Mighty name in vain
The sin of wrath, pride and envy, when does it become a sin. If I have a mentor that is intellectual and I envy his success or wish to be him, does that make one a sinner.
Wrath is when the anger takes control of us (i.e. crimes of passion), pride is when we put ourselves above God and treat others as lesser people, and Envy makes us forget the good things we already have and causes alienation from people. Getting angry, being proud of one's heritage, skills, accomplishments (having a positive feeling toward them) and simply wishing we were lucky enough to have what someone else has, are simple, common feelings that can lead to the sins you speak of, but in and of themselves are not sins. BTW -- I had someone tell me once that they were guilty of the sin of Pride because their grandson hit a home run and they were proud of him. Go figure (eye roll)
Ft. Nicholas, what if you have some sins that you are so ashamed and embarrassed of, that it will be very hard to confess...not murder or anything sinister, but super bad choices that led to mortal sins? Do some priests ask detailed or embarrassing questions? I worry that the priest will look at me in Church and remember the awful things I told him and think I'm a horrible person.
You are not alone. Any priest worth his salt will not be judgmental but will listen. There is very little, if anything, a priest has NOT heard before. Any questions or comments will be for clarification for the purpose of guidance (or to understand the nature of the sin you are confessing), not to further embarrass or humiliate you. Anything you tell him must be held in the strictest confidence and must remain in the seal of the Confessional on pain of his immortal soul. That said, you could always confess anonymously (behind the screen). That way the priest will not know who you are, nor need you take what he says, or asks personally. Just have faith in the "seal of the Confessional." Know priest who is remotely decent will ever repeat what he hears in confession. I, for one, make a point of forgetting what I hear.
Thank you so much Fr. Nicholas. I know you're right. It's just so hard to get the words out of my mouth to a priest, and I know that y'all have heard everything before. My shame and embarrassment is strong, but I know I can do it. I'm so thankful to be back in Church. I'm looking forward to freeing my soul and living the life that God desires of me. It's been a long time coming. Thank you again!
This is how I do it...I confess my sins to a priest who barely speaks English or a priest who is really really old or I go where I don’t know the priests.
Perhaps the best advice I recall that given to me was that " Don't let your shame prevent you from coming back to Jesus. That shame is proof that your heart still belongs with Jesus and He wants you back very much."
Well shit... my shamelessness speaks volumes then. I don't even know how i got here from a video of a guy criticizing mlms. Autoplay is weird.

It's really a wonderful explanation, thank you Father for this important information and things that v need to know 👍
This guy straight up sounds like Data from Star Trek! Very well spoken 👍🏻
Straightfoward and helpful. Thank you, Father!
Thank you, father Nicholas
God bless you father
@Treesa, that would be an excellent homily!
I sometimes confess my temptations, but not as my main reason for going to confession. If i have to go to confession, and if I’ve also been battling intense temptations, I will mention it as well.
Very good Fr Bill
Thank you for this, Father.
Thank you for explaining that the priest is bound by the seal of the confessional and he must keep what is said in the confessional in absolute confidentiality and the importance of not confessing the sins of other people. I cannot unspeak the words that I have spoken but I have had to eat them on many occasions. A day at a time..
Great explanation of the Sacrament of Confession.
Father William, I do appreciate you advice.
Thanks Fr. William for your guidence. I can understand better now and you help me to think out of my sins.
Thank you, Father for these statements of how to express our sins and what not to express.
I found this very helpful. I am a woman religious and I wonder if you would have suggestions
For a religious sister.
Beena Kharkongor Same here Beena. I try to prepare but no matter I get so emotional before and after
All I can advise is: don't try to overcome it.
@@fr.williamnicholas955 thank you so much father. I've understood now and will try to do as you say.
Beena Kharkongor I also become emotional!
I have the same problem and it has helped ALOT not to go face-to-face but rather behind the screen.
Sins are a daily cycle in voice and mind. Thank you for the clear definition. Confession....Penance helps clean our minds and souls for the start of a new day. In Jesus Christ’s Name... Amen.
This is great thank you Far.most of the time I get confused .
This was so helpful! I have been examining my conscience for the past 24 hours and more as I prepare to go to confession after over a decade of not going. This answered a lot of my questions and relieved many of my preconceived "hang-ups".
Pray Always read ur bible in the morning and the evening say ur Catholic or ur Anglican prayers morning daily evening and night
Bravo, well done, at last Clarity. 🕊🙏🏻🙏🏻🕊
👍 Thank you Father Bill!
@@fr.williamnicholas955 definitely, the times it has happened it was always a fill in Priest (not one associated with the Church) Thank you 🙏🏻
So what’s left? I have to Lol…those are some of the things that I was going to say in my next confession, Im thinking about coming back to the church. I don’t abuse myself except for food maybe, I don’t have impurity, I’m in menopause lol. I try to follow the golden rule. I guess my biggest challenge is tending to believe in an eye for an eye…yeah I’ll go with that in confession.
As a scrupulous soul this was very helpful- I think I confess all of those things you said not to confess (except others sins) ! Won’t anymore!!
Thank you Fr Nicholas 💜
I heard a priest once say that within a few months of getting jurisdiction to hear confessions, he heard all the sins imaginable and lots that were not!
This is very helpful thank you😊
Thank you for making this video.
So helpful, thanks Father!
Thanks Father Nicholas!
I thought once Christ Died on the cross and the curtain to the tabernacle was torn down the middle, that that meant one could go to God ourselves. No more sacrifice or burnt offerings. Where would I go to understand why I must confess my sins to a priest. You went on to answer some of my questions, thank you.
John 20:21-23 is a start. Jesus entrusted his apostles with the ministry of reconciliation.
This is wonderful information, Father Nicholas.
Thanks Fr.Williams for you help and clear this out.May God bless you.
Thank you Father, very helpful.
Fantastic! Thank you for this.
Pray That I Will Detest My Bad Habits Sinful Tendencies Flee Evildoers
Thank you so much this really helped me because i have sined alot thank you father
We are all sinners and I thank Father for his guidance, but i get stuck on what to confess and I know I am not perfect..My husband and I get on well, with maybe a few differences of opinion..I really don't want to make up sins.I attend Mass more than once a week and say my rosary daily..
If we engage in a true and thorough examination of conscience, then we let God guide us to remembering our sins so that we can confess them.
Father, will God forgive me? I mocked His Holy name and I'm very very very willing to change. I do not struggle with any other worse sin than taking God's Mighty name in vain
Can we Get 1000 subs without no videos? Hey!! Are you doing better? Have you gone to confession?
God can and does forgive even the vilest and nastiest of sinners. He will forgive you as well.
“A contrite heart God will not despise.” Of course he will forgive you!!
