    As traditional Catholics we still abstain from meat every Friday of the year, as well as Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. That's our personal choice and I know there are many people that do the same

      See my reply to your previous comment.
      In this case too, the Bishops are encouraging the people to abstain from meat every Friday during the year, even though there is no longer an obligation imposed upon them. A growing number of people have done so. But when we go around telling everyone how much better we are because we do so, or going so far as to classify ourselves as "traditional" Catholics (is there any other kind?) because we do so, again smacks of the scenario I reference above. To that I will also add Matthew 6:1

    I agree about abstaining from meat on Friday - it's a memorialization of sacrifice. Not even hard. It is like how we can't earn salvation. The hardest part of salvation is humility to accept we are broken and only through the grand sacrifice of Christ.

      It is, in the end, up to the conference of Bishops in a particular state or country. However, I often wonder why we Catholics are so lacking in spiritual maturity that we have to wait until an authority has told us that we HAVE to do something, before we do it (or before we complain about it and not do it anyway).

    Why have Catholics reduced the fasting so much? We, the Orthodox, during Lent fast for 40 days without meat, dairy and alcohol. Two full weeks are even without oil. On Good Friday we are not supposed to eat or drink anything for 24 hours. In the week before the main part of the Lenten fast begins we first stop eating meat altogether.

    The catholic church needs to stop changing things to make it "easier" on us. Also teachings like this one should be common place in church and youth friendly, Adult friendly. I don't know, it's just sad that at almost 30yrs a so called cradle catholic confirmed and all that... i still don't know much about the church. Im Nigerian by birth but came to the states at 16 the mass, everything just felt underwhelming. I drifted unfortunately, each Time i go back something or the other has changed. Sigh. We need different kinds of chiors that make it easier for people to sing along to hymns and not the opera singers where you barely understand what they're singing. I digress, i just find it sad. That's all 😞

      @ButtsMcCracken 3 года назад +1

      I couldn't agree more. I have been drawn to the catholic church recently by the Bible, the Holy Spirit, and the many inspiring lectures and homilies by priests on youtube. But the masses that I've been to have been very stale, dry, and underwhelming. The church absolutely needs to demand more of its beloved children of God. We have been drawn to the church to spread the Word and love of God--a mission that's arguably more important now than ever. I think that a more demanding and inspiring call to action would reinvigorate the dwindling faith of many.... But what do I know, I'm not even a catholic....

    Farther William, thank you so much for the videos you take the time to post, I've been away from the church for awhile, though not in my heart, however, I'm trying to find my way back fully... not quite sure how I will make it to a physical church, I don't drive and can't afford taxis - I'll leave it in God's hands for now.

    I have a question about fasting and abstinence, what would you suggest please, if someone is a Vegetarian? Also, how do you view eating meat v choosing not to consume any meat, fish or fowl based on the fact that they are all sentient beings, the process of raising and slaughter involves all sorts of cruelty and also because of the environmental impact on the earth? • @fr.williamnicholas955
      @fr.williamnicholas955  3 года назад +2

      Chicken is considered meat. However, eggs and milk are acceptable for Fridays as those would be considered dairy products.
      I wonder if the person who said you should not to eat any animal products is him/herself a vegan. That decision would be entirely up to you, although I would advise against it. The reason being that, unless you are already a vegan, the practice of meatless Fridays is a communal practice, which we do together as Church. To go over and above might hint at self-righteousness (they do this, but I do more because I am holier). There is humility in doing what everyone else does in this case because the emphasis is walking with the Church and letting the Church walk with us in these particular practices and observances.
      If, however, one makes the choice to go vegan for Lent, that would be something along the line of a personal observance, which, would apply to every day of Lent, not just Fridays.

    • @fr.williamnicholas955
      @fr.williamnicholas955  2 года назад +1

      A very good question.
      In finding an answer, a good question to ask is: Is it a "reason" or an "excuse"? A "reason' tends to be true and authentic. An "excuse" tends to be fabricated or exaggerated (coming from simply NOT wanting to do something). I don't want to project, but health issues like yours sound more like a "reason".
      With extreme health considerations you are exempt from fasting obligations. Always good to look at ways in which you can conceivably participate in this communal observance, but it nothing is meant to put people's health at risk.
      All the same, it is good to discuss (confirm) it with your parish priest. It is a bad habit we get into when we take up "exempting ourselves", but I can't think of any priest who would be stubborn about this and say you are still obliged (I have had parishioners in the same circumstance check with me and I always confirm their exemption and commend them for checking.)

      Great information. I always like to hear what other Churches do for the solemn days of penance. Gives me what I need to remind Catholics that compared to other Churches, the Catholic practice are much easier, and therefore no reason for the excuses I get from people who don't participate simply because they don't want to (even though they try to be much more eloquent in their reasons that's what it boils down to). When they tell me that they are just to hard for them, I remind them of what Churches like yours do and they feel less inclined to complain (doesn't make them participate, but they are less inclined to give their weak excuses).

    Father William, what do you mean by eating meat? When I was a kid my mother used to tell me that it was only for red meat, that fish would be ok. Is that teaching correct or we should have vegetarian meals on the Ash Wednesday and Fridays?

    • @fr.williamnicholas955
      @fr.williamnicholas955  5 лет назад +11

      Red meat, and poultry (chicken, turkey, etc.) and pork are meats to be abstained from. I'm sure Rabbit and other game are in there as well. Fish is fine (ergo the popularity of parish "fish frys" during Lent). Some decide to go all out and abstain from fish, but it is not mandatory .
      Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are days of Fasting AND Abstinence. Going vegetarian or soup supper is a good idea on those days. The formal practice, however, is as I describe in the video. Either skip a meal, light meal and full meal (in no particular order) or skip a meal and two light meals, or one full meal and two light meals. I go for the first option (easier to remember).

I have always been annoyed by people who throw their good deeds and piety in other peoples faces. It feels like they’re doing it to feed their own egos and not better themselves or uplift the downtrodden.

      Falguy60 . By my memory ( and I’m not the expert here) we begin the practice at age 7 and complete the fasting obligation at age 60 and are not violating any discipline in fasting anymore. I’m not the expert so please read the laws. I could be off a year or so in the end of required fasting. I’m 72 and will continue. (This is not in regard to-the one hour before Holy communion ). @@Donna-cc1kt As I explain in the video, being over sixty does not exempt you from abstaining from meat. Only that you no longer have the OBLIGATION. But your continuing in that practice is a great witness to those who prefer to be legalistic and see the practices of the Church as things you "get out of". You are not out of date in your practice, and abstinence and fasting is still very much a post-Vatican II practice. The Church just wants its people to exercise more spiritual maturity than existed back when people did good, spiritually beneficial things, not because they were important, but because HOLY MOMMY CHURCH said that you HAD to do it. Many people have shared with me their anger (or at least disappointment) that the Church no longer says it is a MORTAL sin that sends you to HELL if you eat meat on Fridays. My comeback to that is, "what exactly makes you think eating meat on days of abstinence, when the rest of the Church is engaging in a communal observance, helps you get to heaven?"

    Yada yada yada, Holy Mother Church taught us to fast on ember days and before Holy Communion, what a joke to not eat one hour and call it fasting. What was wrong with being more devout? Why now as against 60 years ago. Why for nineteen hundred years did Catholics fast and suddenly for the last 60 years we don’t fast. We made a joke of fasting, eating two small meals and eating right up till one hour before Holy Communion. Will we be prepared to die for our Holy Faith, by being so weak? We need to get back to being more tough on ourselves.

    • @fr.williamnicholas955

      I'll raise your Yada, yada yada with a Nag! Nag! Nag! The Church did not practice your version of fasting for nineteen hundred years. At the most, the universal practice was only for just under five-hundred years. The practice varied throughout the Church depending on diocese, region, etc.
      There is nothing wrong with being more devout, but why do you think that Catholics need an obligation? Are they that inept that they can't do something on their own, without Holy Mommy Church holding their hand? If it means that much to you, then do it. Stop worrying about everyone else, and, even more-so, presuming they they are not doing it on their own.

    • @fr.williamnicholas955
      @fr.williamnicholas955  3 года назад +3

      I'd be careful about commenting on what is "so much better." One may engage in a particular practice, but keep in mind that the Church now requires only one hour before Mass. To do something different, or to do more because of a disposition that "this is better" smacks of the scenario in Luke 18:11-12.
      Don't get me wrong, I fast from midnight the night before as well, unless I am not celebrating Mass until mid-day. But I avoid going around telling people that what I do is "better", especially if they are already doing what the Church is instructing.

    • @booklover1945
      @booklover1945 3 года назад

      The Church out of love for the Sacrament of the Holy Eucharist put the rule of fasting from midnight until the time we receive the Holy Eucharist. We are hungering for the Lord, fasting like our Lord. Please keep up the practice and tell others to do so as well. One doesn’t suddenly change a good thing and then say oh now we don’t do that. The question is why do we no longer follow in the footsteps of the saints, what made us change? Well as sacred scripture tells us God doesn’t change and by that extension even His Church doesn’t change. The people who pretend to be priests and encourage people to do less and have no devotion and no piety will answer God. Catholics should hold on to Tradition. The Vat2 priests are poisonous and we should pray for them but keep away from them. They judge us and say we are being judgmental for simply following the Church’s unchangable teachings. They show how Protestant they are when they quote scripture, but sacred scripture proves them wrong. They cannot preach beyond God loves you, because that’s all they have. They cannot even say Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, they are that clueless about what the Catholic Church teaches, for them , the Church started after vat2.

    Judeo-Christian tradition? The moment I heard that is the moment I stopped watching this video. We Catholics should be aware of this heresy.

      Fasting and Abstinence are practices in the Jewish Tradition as well as Christian Tradition. Not a heresy, but a fact. Our Christian practices were not invented by the Apostles, they were Jewish Traditions affirmed by Jesus for his followers. It is a Jewish AND Christian Tradition, and therefore a Judeo-Christian tradition. Time to be a little less thin-skinned about this.

      Yeah! So....How do you fast then? I think this is an all inclusive way to honour our Lord. Something everyone can do, fairly easily.

      E.J. Thomas . I took it to mean, when Anne said “Pffttt” , that Jesus fasted 40 days and many Catholics even today fast more intensely. For example, an exorcist must fast and pray to a much greater degree. When the Apostles asked Jesus why they had failed to cast out demons in a boy, Jesus said these were strong demons and that required praying and fasting. I can only imagine that was an intense fast.
