Hot Tent Camp Testing a new Woods Walker stove with OVEN, Honest opinion! How to roll a stove pipe

  • Woods Walker were kind enough to send me a stove to test, This was something completely new to me as it has a built in Oven!!
    This was a first burn test and the stove ran great but the oven was a little compromised as the heat inside the oven was not even.
    However I did manage to successfully bake some bread and roast some spuds.
    The stove can also be used without the oven giving it quite a high heat output, too much in fact for the types of hot tents I use.
    If you have a larger tent say 3 or 4 persons then it would be fine.
    When configured as a stove/ oven, the firebox is smaller and does need quite a bit of frequent tending.

    Pleased you were given the opportunity to review this stove, it was one I was considering and I did wonder about how well the oven section would work.
    I would really like to cook pizzas when camping but sadly I don’t think this is going to be the answer.

    That's why it's a very good idea on the part of the manufacturer of the stoves, give people more than one option of a design and they can choose one that fits their preference and they will be happier. They both look like excellent stoves and either one of would likely fit the needs of most camping outdoorsmen. Thanks for showing them to us and giving your opinion Sandy. Hi Sandy. Looks to me like the oven needs raising up off the floor an inch, to allow for some heat to flow all around it. Probably a damper as well, to help direct the gases around. Back to the drawing board? Why not a box on top of the stove?
    Still, free toys are not to be sniffed at, and the company got some valid feedback.
    All the best.

    Got the smaller one.personaly always burn it at home first because of making a better and quicker roll of the chimney
    I used a 6ft tube same diameter and rolled it in that with all the rings on.
    Havnt seen anyone roll it up and re roll out after the burn.but it is quite easy to keep shape after initial burn.the small wood basket that comes with it is a wast of time.and the wire shelf I may keep but it's a bit gimmicky.alsaid it's a damn good stove.

    Great video, excellent explanation on both stoves. Cheers for your review, it's shaped my opinion on the smaller of the two as a choice. With the door design, could I possibly ask if there's much leakage from any smoke? I can see the door doesn't have any sort of seal, same for where the chimney attaches to the stove. Cheers

    • @WiltshireMan
      @WiltshireMan  Год назад +1

      Don't get any smoke leakage at all until you close the flu damper fully, then it does smoke a bit, I can close the damper down by 2/3 and its fine but any less and it will leak smoke. I think the later stoves also have a better flu connection

    Didn’t see this til today. Great overall test and feedback- had my doubts on this one. You can get a separate oven that sets on top of any hot tent stove, which seems to be the best option I think. I really liked the looks and performance of the Russian Bear stoves, but after talking with the company they don’t do titanium. People - including myself are trying to move away from Chinese product, but tell me who is making all the Ti outdoor kit? China.

    I have the woodswalker as well. I do prefer the "normal" size stove though by the looks it`s too big to carry around other than for car camping. What car camping is concerned, my first choice would be my Orland stove from Danmark. For those there are also an oven available which you can buy seperately but I`ve never really felt the need to use an oven in the field other than a dutch oven. Nice review though :-)

      @@WiltshireMan I`ve used it once just for the burn in. But I also have a Winnerwell titanium stove which was an older model and a bit (from my opinion) more flimsy. Lovely Jubbly. Could you be so kind as to tell me what make of camp bed you used and is it comfortable? Thank you. It would be good to know where the smoke goes in relation to that Oven, over, under and whether or not there is a baffle plate in the top of the stove or not, I guess not due to weight. I think you need good seasoned hardwood and you need the damper in as much as possible without smoking yourself out. I think that with a little bit of fiddling, some aluminium foil etc, you'd get yourself a decent Pie or two out of that stove.

    • @WiltshireMan
      @WiltshireMan  2 года назад +1

      Hi Robert, the heat goes up over the top of the oven then up the pipe and yes a bit of damper keeps the heat in, as for the camp cot, it was just a real cheap thing, perhaps the cheapest one you could find, don't know the make though
