  • My first time cleaning carbs on the GL 1500. Not the first time cleaning motorcycle carbs but a learning experience for me on this one. Got it done, after I got it back together it had an accelerator pump issue that was addressed in part 3 in this series. No new parts, only cleaning and it starts and runs great now.

Wow thats weird that the carburetors are at like a 45 degree angle , different colored electrical tapes that are available at auto parts stores will help u keep track of where pieces go back together, i used it on home electrical problems to keep track of what wires went together and light poles scattered throughout apartment grounds , thank you for the carburetor video.

I like your inverted shelf for keeping stuff from rolling off the work surface. Nothing like having to chase around after runaway items, or worse, have something get damaged as a result of a fall.

Thanks Charles; The shelves were a find during a dumpster dive, and I just grabbed one by chance to do a carb many years ago and realized how practical it turned out to be so I usually do them this way, sometimes I do one on the camera cart as well.

The front end is like an SU carburetor on an MG. I've had to sand crud/old gas/corrosion off of the needles, but just as you said, it really didn't affect anything.
The biggest problem I've had is the float valve getting stuck. It's gotten better since I started using ethanol free fuel and adding some "sta-bil" to the fuel.
I need to try your shelf idea. I'm notorious for having things roll off the workbench.

I've worked on SU carburetors when I was a young mechanic on the small European cars. Yes the inverted shelf is a life saver when working on carbs and anything with small parts that can roll away.

Have You ever drained the carbs via drain plugs on the Bike ?? I can not see how to get to them . Any hints would be great , Thank you for this Vid.

I don't remember seeing drain plugs on these carbs, I know if there are plugs they would not be accessable with everything together. Just use premium gas and make sure you change the gas every year if you don't use it all up.

Cliff.... I am having issues after a rebuild. Have about 30 hours diaging this mess..... is it better to pick up a used carb set and be done with it?

Look for 4 tight screws that need impact driver to separate sections to get to bottom bowls. If you replaced vac holes, what size tubing need to buy?

No it wasn't that late, or early. It was like early evening new year day and was back on the bike and running that night. Thanks for watching.

If you ever need a rebuild kit Saber Cycle is the place to go!

Thanks Will; I remember Saber but it's been a while. I know from Honda a kit for both of them that has everything would probably cost $300 or more. Big bike parts has a good selection too. It got almost warm today, I was thinking about riding it without the body parts on just to try it out.
