    When McNamara retired she explained that Bela made her do 18 consecutive UB routines in workouts daily. She said she could not do it at first but over time she did. The last ones were not good but she did them. That is why she hit cold three times for 10.00 in that competition. She was on autopilot.

      That is what wins gold medals- repetitions after repetitions. Shawn Johnson said that Chow had her do something like 8 or 10 beam routines in succession leading up to the beam final. Muscle memory gave her the edge.

  • @amarkray01

    I think that both Ma Yanhong & Julianne McNamara were deserving of the Gold Medal. Ma's routine was innovative and had cleaner form/bodyline, but Julianne showed more variety in swing elements and transitions, punctuated by a perfectly stuck dismount. Too bad they eliminated the possibility for medal ties at the Olympics after 2000. There are too many athletes who have been robbed of a Gold Medal (e.g. Marian Dragulescu, Paul Hamm, Nastia Liukin) because of the ludicrous rule that the IOC implemented. If the athletes receive the same score, they should receive the same medal, like they would at any FIG sanctioned event.

    • @amarkray01
      @amarkray01 4 года назад +3

      @@rolandgreen7484 Wow! So you're ready to discredit a 16-year ruling that was already contested, objected, and reviewed by the IOC which upheld the judging from that competition? Despite what you might think, that's the end result and we all have to live with it. I could say that Andreea Raducaan was cheated out of her AA Gold Medal in 2000 because of a "bogus" technicality, too. Anyone with eyes can clearly see that Andreea was the superior gymnast on that fateful night, but she later had her medal taken away because she took a Sudafed (or something else containing Pseudoephedrine which is a banned substance)? Grow up, dude! I understand that you have nothing better to do with your time because of COVID-19 & self quarantine, but if you REALLY want to start scrutinizing people's comments, come with a better defense than that one

    I did not watch the Olympics back then in 1984. Felt the games were tainted with the Soviet Bloc boycott. So glad that Romania broke with the block and came to the games.
    Back then Mary Lou Retten got all of the attention overshadowing the other gymnasts. So 40 years later watching this we see that Ms. McNamara also had a great Olympics and had to put up with Mary Lou getting all of the attention. So 40 years later I salute Julianna.

      Wraps were still allowed. They were never banned, they just phased out. At the 1985 Worlds, following the 1984 Olympics, some gymnasts were still performing hip wraps. It's just that as the 80s progressed the bars were set wider and wider apart to the point that wraps were no longer possible.

      Still better than any competition the Soviets were at- they didn’t have the opportunity to take control of the entire competition and deny deserving athletes of medals. Their presence was a stain on the 1970’s and 1980’s, all the way up to the farce of an AA in 1992- when you consider how much they decided the outcome- instead of the actual judges.
