    In N America and Europe, crafts people like this are practically obsolete. Some people are doing it for hobby, but not for living... Everything comes from factories, in China. We suffer, as a society, being so dependent on cheap Chinese goods. I honor anyone who has skills like this man.

    • @doubaya2959

      I understand what you are saying. But if we stay like this in N America to produce knives this way then we will have to pay at least 100 dollars for a single piece of knife.

    • @Violet_Lotus_

      @@doubaya2959 Maybe a good knife SHOULD cost that much. People are way too accustomed and addicted to cheap Chinese goods, which look very good at first, then break and need to be discarded very soon.
      I'm currently looking at a kitchen knife from Japan that costs over $100. It's from a reputable company that has been in business for over 100 years, made with highest grade Japanese steel (some of the best in the world). A knife like that is a lifetime investment. That's a knife that you put away when you leave town, so that nothing "happens" to it.
      Additionally the cheap Chinese goods are responsible for some of worst polluting going on in the world, but because it's out of our sight, no one thinks about it.

    He's a blacksmith. It's been done that way for forever, yeah different materials over the ages, but the tools and techniques haven't changed much, even to modern day. Yeah, there's machines that make the work a bit easier and quicker, but the techniques are timeless. I've been to blacksmith shops here in the US that except for the forge and the fact that they stand, there's really no difference.

      @@Hazehellivo agreed. His forging technique made me cringe. Most of his blows were crooked and he didn’t do anything to correct. As others mentioned, he worked the steel way too much while cold. Going to have micro fractures from here to hell. He didn’t harden the steel, you can tell by the color of the sparks while he was grinding it. Not to mention that any gardening would be destroyed by the overheating said grinding was doing.
      Entertaining? Ok, sure. Proper technique? Craftsmanship? I think not. Any smith worth their salt would trash that blade before someone tried using it and seriously hurt themselves.

    • @TheOneAndOnlySame
      @TheOneAndOnlySame 2 года назад

      @@Hellboy-V No, it's not brittle, it's soft. when you heat a steel to forge temperature and then let it cool down you're making it soft a plastic. To make it brittle you have to heat it to non magnetic and then quench it in water or oil then it will be extra hard and a bit elastic. Then you want to heat the steel again to around 400°c for a period of time to scale down the hardness/brittleness and obtain more elasticity /toughness in exchange

    Beautiful work and have to commend for the hard work!! Sometimes the old ways work just fine too. Loved how refined his working tools were compared to the craftsmanship of what was being made.. and got to wonder if all was for nought as I never saw blade quenched/heat treated or tempered. A bearing or 52100 steel would make a fine knife if heat treated. But straight out of hot shaping without a heat treat wouldn’t hold an edge for longest all. All and all, love the ingenuity sir. Two thumbs up.

      @shadetreetrades.jackofall2188 3 года назад +19

      @@ramiromoreno1386 well without knowing what kind of steel your taking a guess at exact. But best guess would be to heat up the metal until it is no longer magnetic, by checking hot metal with a magnet. Once it no longer sticks to steel, quench/cool, in a tub/container of oil. Can be motor oil. Once it completely cooled use a file to see if you achieved hardness. File should skate across metal instead of grab into metal. If you got this far. After blade is cooled and clean, put in an oven at 450*F for an hour. Take out and let cool slowly at room temperature. That will temper the blade and give it some of its strength/flexibility back. Hopefully if your dealing with a mid to higher carbon steelThis should work fine. But if you don’t know what steel
      It is it couldn’t hurt. Or if on the easier way if you don’t have a forge, use a torch to heat the cutting edge red hot evenly and quench in oil. Hope that helps..good luck.
