This is exactly what I needed! My rear right wheel was no longer being propelled, so I was pushing this monster around for 2+ years. I replaced keys, springs, pinions per this video and I’m back in business. Thank you!

Thanks Erick, the other videos say put the gear on the other side but don't mention that the indented one goes out on one side and in on the other. Took me two days of adjusting everything and still wouldn't work until I watched your video. Life saver and hair.

Thanks so much for this well done tutorial that guided me through the process with clear and detailed instructions, and excellent video quality. This allowed me to correctly diagnose and repair the "wheel lockup" problem with my JX75.

Great video Erik. I have this model(even older, the silver one)l and was having problems with the left rear wheel falling partly off. It had been serviced by an independent lawn mower repair shop. After watching your video I discovered that the inboard snap ring was not there. Got 2 new snap rings and installed as per your video and presto my mower is fixed. Thanks so much.

You saved me on this one. I had the left rear pinion installed backwards and had the lock up problem in reverse that you described. My '91 14 SB still starts on the first pull and I'm glad I found your video so I didn't screw it up.

    Erik,
Thanks for the video. My Brothers 1994 John Deere 14SB rear wheels were making some strange noises and had issues turning. Followed your how-to and it's as quiet as a Church Mouse. I will tackle my JX85 next as part of a preventive maintence as you just can't beat these models of Deeres.

Thanks for this video. I have a newer model (Kawasaki engine and no grease zerks for the transmission--oh well), but this works exactly the same on mine.
I was having trouble with the right wheel not spinning while pivoting clockwise for turns. This video showed me how to fix the pinion on the left side, which was not spooling properly and was the cause of the problem. (I had to do some thinking to figure that part out: the wheels should click when mower is being pushed forward faster than the drive shaft. With the left wheel not doing that, the right wheel could not spin the drive shaft backwards properly when I was pivoting it.)
Mowing yesterday with everything working properly was a dream.
I have to get new wheel shields and will have to take it apart again in a couple of weeks, but now I know how to do it.
    Great stuff.

Great video. The self propulsion pinion is slipping and won’t grab when I engage it. Took the transmission off and opened it up. Transmission is fine, it was that pinion not grabbing the transmission rod when engaged. Couldn’t know for sure until I opened the transmission, manually engaged the self propulsion, and turned the gears by hand. The pinion was trying to grab but would slip. I just said the heck with it and ordered a pinion kit. Was 38 dollars on Amazon. I think it was just the worn out spring but the grooves inside the pinion looked a little worn. Will let you know how it turns out.

I have a John Deere 14SB that I've been using for quite some time, fantastic mower. A year or so ago, the right rear wheel stopped self propelling. The left rear wheel still worked, so it wasn't a major issue. Recently the right rear (working) wheel began locking up at random. Then self propelled stopped working on it, too.
    Notes/symptoms:
1: The drive belt still engages when the lever is pushed and it spins.
2: With the mower off, if I push the mower forward, there is a continuous clicking sound (which I think means the transmission is still functional).
3: With the self propelled lever engaged, if I pull the mower backwards, the wheels don't lock.
4: The teeth on both the wheels and pinion gears appear to be perfectly fine and not stripped.
I haven't found a ton of information about troubleshooting, but my best guess is that the if I remove the wheels, then pinion gear, there is a spring and Keyway. I'm assuming with the symptoms I have listed I'll find that on both wheels either the spring or keyway will be broken/damaged. Does this sound right as to why my self propelled won't engage?
Thanks so much for your help if you can shed any light on this!

I have owned my John Deere 14SB since 1990. It has served me well for all these years. I have had problems with the rear wheel adjusters. I did not ever grease them so the bearings eventually burnt out. I am trying to repair them at the same time trying to keep the cost of the repairs down. JD wants 134.95 each for those adjusters so what I did is drilled out the holes and ordered 4-1/2"x 11/16"x 5/8" roller bearings. I will press them into place and then I will see if that does the job. I do need to find a used fuel tank mine is cracked and leaking.

Nice video, thanks. I have s 24SB that is very similar. My problem is that I cannot get the spring clamp off. It is recessed into the pinion a little bit, unlike the other side. Seems like it is binding up or there is not enough space in the recess to fully expand the spring.

I have a 1997 jx75 and it goes forward and reverse with the self propel off, but I can only make left turns. Otherwise the wheels lock up. Could the pinion be the issue, is it normal, or could it be something else? Everything else works great (just got it, used.) Thanks!

I like the video but I wish you could've shown the other side so we could see if it's exactly the same as far as the washers and everything else. Mine seems to be different on the other side, so I'm not sure if someone's been in there before me and lost some parts need to find a diagram.

I’m a year late with this response, but I don’t think that you will need to do the other Side. I have the same JX 75, that’s shown in the Video. I bought it in January of 2000 .I’ve only had to do the left side of the mower so far, like the Guy did in the Video. I just make sure that I put grease in the fittings on both the left side an the right side. But this video saved me a lot of time.

Great review man! iI got mine for free i got it running. when i looked at the transmission i saw one of the wheels were not turning. it turns out that the gear on the wheel was shot. the problem that may have caused it was the lack of those three washers. I tried looking all over the web but can't find those stupid things. can you give me a lead on where to go to find some? thanks a bunch
