  • It's like we're back in the 1940s. Ham radio is making mainstream headlines and 80 year old C-47 D-Day aircraft are transporting supplies to those in need once again, all because of the hurricane season going on right now. As they say... When all else fails...

My dad was using a lot of the old radios out of decommissioned WWII aircraft as base station radios. Made a lot of global contacts on those radios.

Great info Max. As a long time Ham Radio operator as well as a pilot I love to see this type of information

Another great video Max. The ham radios are fascinating. I’m going back to Australia soon, and will look into what it would take to get a license there. At one time the school kids received their lessons by radio. The power source was a generator powered by bicycle pedals.

Great to see civilians taking the lead on emergency communications and supply efforts. To see the C-47's return to their original role is heartwarming. The Hueys and their owners/crews providing pinpoint supplies and evacuations makes me proud of the warbird foundations that keeps these aircraft flying.

I think it's awesome and thank you! Aviation is my 1st choice in what you do. Idea, if you can put together some kind of solar powered portable ham radio kit like shown I would be looking to purchase something like this. Keep up the good work Heavy Metal Horizons, likes here big fan :)

Hey Max, great to hear about this great aircraft seeing action again. I was thinking sense you've flown on one if you don't know about the movie already, I just watched an old John Wayne movie called " Island in the Sky" and the low flying Dc'3's flying low in formation to the snow covered hills searching for their downed comrad was breath taking and inspiring. It showed how aviators are a band of brothers which is another title of a book by that same author Ernest Gann. I never did fly or get a ride in one of those but many years ago learned to fly D-18's out of FLABOB Riverside. I'm the guy a few weeks ago on your guitar 🎸 channel has that same P-38 model that's behind you in my home office. Well I thought you might enjoy that movie, I did. Thanks again. CFIAM JOE.
