      Harmeet Minhas I dunno, but I hear that tourists are great targets for muggers and other con artists.Don't know what to do, don't know who to go to when robbed, don't know when he's getting conned, etc.

      Tourists always stop in the middle of the street. Happens all the time in places that attract tourists like in Times Square. I'm here trying to get to the AMC theatre down there and it takes FOREVER because the tourists just stop walking in the middle of the street and stand there. It just wastes time for other people who have to walk to work and stuff, you know? What should've been a 5 minute walk in now 9 minutes because tourists are blocking your way from your destination.

      +TrixD I think tourists are just enjoying themselves, not caring about your busy fabulous life at work;)

    "Don't wear this" and "Don't wear that". Um, high heels are uncomfortable to wear all day long if you're walking around in the big city. Yes I like to wear them, but for like church or dances or special occasions, not exploring New York City. You're basically asking for blisters. I'd rather wear flats instead.

    • @sushi-slice
      @sushi-slice 8 лет назад +12

      So true! I have all these nice church heels that would be really fun to wear all the time, but I can't really wear heels if I want to get to my next class that's halfway across the school when I have to focus on not snapping my ankle in half as well as figuring out where I'm going. In short, I feel your pain.

      +EmilyMikuChan : Anybody who's been in NYC knows NOT TO WEAR HEELS.... There are way too many gouges and bulges in the sidewalk for you to trip on... That is one way to tell if you are a new Yorker....

      Stylish but FUNCTIONAL, it means that if wearing heels isnt functional for you dont wear them but if you so happen to have a stylish pair of shoes that also just so happen to be very comfortable and functional for the climate and environment you're in then you should wear them

      You got it all wrong its not offensive at all. Since the video is about teaching you what a turist shouldn't do but might normally do back at home. It means you can forget about all the high taxes europe have + all the expensive and overpriced products we have and.instead enjoy all the cheap stuff USA have like cmon iphones/cars sell for almost half the price in the US. But with all the Money you save u'll have to tip everyone and everything since their taxes wont cover their peoples healthcare n/or wage.. So yeah just to finish your sentence "Sorry you're not in europe anymore_stuff that should be free isnt"

      no. here it's not a matter of good service it's because employers expect tips to subsidize employees wages. the server minimum wage is 2.17 an hour. you don't tip cuz the service is good. you tip becuase you have no business using that service unless you are going to tip.

    • @sunnyqueen5685
      @sunnyqueen5685 5 лет назад +1

      @@TraderTravels So it's a system matter then, one that should be fixed asap. Like, 10 years ago asap. In Spain you don't tip. Ever. Unless they've super nice and super helpful, so if the service has been crappy and the waiter rude, I don't see why I should tip them.

    • @TraderTravels
      @TraderTravels 5 лет назад

      @@sunnyqueen5685 It's true. Many people think it should be fixed but until then, you are expected to tip and while it's not required people will think you're an arsehole if you don't. You go in and expect these services from people receiving slave wages and have no intention of tipping.

      I agree with Raffael. Tipping isn't mandatory in most of Europe so we have no idea how to do it. How is it a tip if it's mandatory? I get that the workers are paid below minimum wage, but it's not our responsibility to pay their salary. Their boss should pay them reasonably.

I live on an island where tourists come in literally by the boat load in the summer and it's really obvious when someone's a visitor because they drive slow, they dilly-dally in the grocery store, they jay-walk, they stop their car in the middle of the road every time they see a deer or something, they hog up line space, they're just generally really loud, they crowd and pee in the lakes, and I'm exclusive so maybe it's just my attitude that doesn't like them but others agree with me, so I'll leave you to your thoughts now and not crowd your notifications. 💁🏼😘

    "Don't complain how expensive things are?...YOU'RE NOT IN EUROPE ANYMORE??" Erm...from the Swiss side of view, that's just cute. And it kinda offends me and all the others who leave their money there (They clearly referred to the prices because the background was a check). And if you're SO exquisite: Not one decent restaurant had waiters who served everything correctly. Educate your people the right way, visit Europe once in a while (many of us have higher & ecofriendlier standards) to get a real opinion and we'll talk. I like the US and met some very friendly people there but people behind videos like this make you look ridiculous.

    • @cqtaylor
      @cqtaylor 10 лет назад +5

      ItsNadine71335 So let me understand this correctly: New Yorkers need to visit Europe to better respect Europeans who are visiting New York? So that New Yorkers can "get a real opinion"? I guess that means you'll never have to acclimate culturally to places you're visiting. ... Like New York.

    • @ItsNadine71335
      @ItsNadine71335 10 лет назад +6

      Nope, I don't mean that you have to change just that we can stay the same. You have to acclimate culturally everywhere. Of course. I mean that you shouldn't make such mean and sometimes even wrong statements about Europeans if you're not in a position to do so.

    • @ItsNadine71335
      @ItsNadine71335 10 лет назад +6

      yep I know that waiters live from tips. Therefore, American waiters are generally nicer to the customers. BUT being nice has nothing to do with a good education. Sure, there are students who work for a bit of money and stuff and that's no problem at all if they don't serve correctly. But when you're in a very noble restaurant, you could at least expect them to serve from the right side and wait with cleaning the table until everyone's finished. :)

      You make a valid point. I've had the pleasure of visiting Switzerland twice (beautiful country by the way) and let me tell you that Zurich in general terms is anything but cheap. • @ItsNadine71335
      @ItsNadine71335 10 лет назад

      Thank you :) Yes, especially Zurich (where I live) and Geneva are very expensive and this statement in the video just kinda hurts me cause I work hard for my money. Just like anyone else. But I also think that message wasn't meant to be so disrespectful. Unfortunately it was...

      I think it's fine to act like a tourist; however, it's not fine when the touristy attitude negatively affects the locals. Suddenly stopping in the middle of the sidewalk is horribly inconsiderate to the flow of pedestrian traffic. Just like on the road, pull/walk to the side, then act like a tourist. Don't make me late for the train.

      Yeah, you can stop in the middle of a NY sidewalk if you want to be smacked into. Maybe on purpose. Some people run across the road when it's a green light because they don't feel like waiting to proceed, no one's gonna like it if you stop the flow. You got to go against a building. And good luck with that during events. There is no stopping then.

    I'm from Europe, went to NY last year, I can tell that everything's much cheaper there. For the tipping part, don't blame europeans. They don't know, I didn't know too ! Til the day a taxidriver didn't give me money back : I was like "WTF... he's so rude..." hahah. I just didn't know ! Tipping is not an obligation everywhere, it doesn't mean that we are rude...we just don't know! In Belgium it is not in our habits to give tips to everyone. Some people do, some don't. Also it depends on the service, if the waitress/waiter is nice, smiles etc...you give when you want to, to show the waitress/waiter (or taxidriver or whoever you want) that they provided a very good service. It's a plus, but they sure don't depend on tips (I know what i'm talking about).
    I don't understand why in the US they depend on tips...someone can explain ?

    • @vangrails
      @vangrails 9 лет назад +1

      Ok, but isn't it your duty to read and to know about the conventions of a country before you travel to that country?
      The waiters and taxi drivers depend on tips in the US, that is the way it is, it is their salary. Each country has certain conventions. A lot of people in the US are poor (maybe not dirt poor but still poor) so we should give them tips when convention requires that.

    Visited New York this year back in July for a week. My whole family looked like tourists, which we were. My mom and I had to go to a concert together and we thought we were lost multiple times. It's okay to look like a tourist. Lots of people are touring as well. People were very nice and offered to help us a lot even if they had work they needed to get to. They still showed us how to get where we needed to. If people think you look stupid, so be it. They probably got lost or looked stupid in NY at some point anyways.

    Yes, regarding tips and the harassment associated with them (...there's is no other word to define what is going on with it over there, I am afraid...) I felt I was not in Europe anymore, that's for sure.
    In fact, I actually felt I was in Africa, India or any other less fortunate world location.
    I don't care how OK you guys feel the "Tip Racket" is...You have to understand that, for outside travelers, obnoxious NYC waiters forcing tips are even more "experience destroying" then Bombay street beggars or a Moroccan guides latching on to "help" us find the local tanneries because those, at least, are actually less fortunate human beings, to whom a small amount of money makes a world of difference.
    To put it simply, "Enforceable Tipping Etiquette" in NYC is one of the most "douchbaggy", first-world-subliming-into-third-world things I ever encountered in my travels.

    • @RoseFox0029

      Everywhere in the world serving tables is a low-paying job, requiring a limited sets of skills.
      Although it is common in other parts of the world (my own country included) for higher educated people to go for part job times in restaurants to pad up their income (i.e College students) only in America do they expected to be financially rewarded higher that it is the norm, just because they are wannabe actors, fruitless writers, any other contributing over-qualified demographics or even just actual full-time waiters/waitresses with a dislocated sense of what their work is worth (there's a reason why their employers pay what they pay).
      In other countries (my own included) waiters are also tipped if the service was good but this is done at normal rates not at 15 and 20% and, most certainly, it does not cross their minds to "bully" clients into tipping, as it happened to friend of mine who actually had a waiter following her and her husband down the street, harassing them through an whole NYC block, just because he found the tip inadequate.
      Face it, you've created a "social-etiquette-monster" and are now ill-equipped to deal with it as it should be dealt (...if it was me, not my friend, I would have called a cop on the spot and filled a formal harassment complaint...)

    I don't think the most europeans would complain about the prices (deffently not if they're from Scandinavia, nothern or the most of southern europe) or give bad tips.
    For me personally, last time i were in New York there was only 2 places i didn't tip "well". And that was because the service was terrible. (and i'm from Denmark, so i'm used to medium to low standarts of service.) And have you ever tried having a european tourist complain about New York-prices?

    I'm from rural west midlands in England and I went to London for the first time last month. Couple things I learned:
    #1 Don't stand still on the wrong side of the escalator.
    #2 Make sure you hold on to the hand rail when the tube moves, or you will fall over / crash into an expensively dressed business man and subsequently spill his coffee over both of you.
    #3 Ignore the indian/pakistani guys who try to sell you tech stuff in the streets.
    #4 NEVER stop/dither in the middle of the pavement.
    #5 Don't go to order in starbucks until you know exactly what you want, especially when it's busy.
    #6 Don't feed the pigeons or they will fucking stalk you and your family and land on your head.
    #7 Only be tourist-y in the appropriate places. Taking a picture of every shop/statue/signpost/bus you pass is unnecessary.
