    All I see are neglectful parents wanting to blame other people for their poor parenting skills of watching over their kids. Let’s say they’re successful at getting rid of social media? Then what? What are neglectful parents going to blame after?

      They aren’t trying to get rid of social media with the legislation they are proposing. Parents do need to be more involved, but with any new technology there are unforeseen problems that need to be addressed. I don’t believe the social media companies set out to facilitate child predators, but they do. You can’t control what evil perverts do, but you better be vigilant when it comes to parenting.

      I’m 25, really grew up with the internet, and generally I agree parents have been woefully unequipped to deal with what the internet has become, but I can also not whole heartedly blame people for not understanding what it would become when you could start making a lot of money in horrible ways. these platforms, and platforms that branch from them are truly evil, just as evil as Wall Street, as the MDIC, there are horrible people online. I personally believe that If you are raised right and have a good heart you cannot really even process this evil until you experience it. I’ve had people try and exploit me, and my world view changed that day even if not much came from it, we need to repeal 230, we need to be able to sue these companies, these kids are not ready for this, no one is.

    Your kid drives across an intersection in a Toyota and he isn’t wearing a seatbelt. A Ford F-150 t bones him. The kid gets seriously hurt. Despite Toyota’s and Ford’s best efforts in safety technology, the parent sues the CEOs of Ford and Toyota because they failed to protect their child.
    Does that make sense? It isn’t the CEO’s fault that TikTok or Toyota failed to protect the children. It is the parents and child’s responsibility when using the app or vehicle. They’re just trying to get rid of TikTok.

    When I was growing up in the U.S. during the dawn of the 'internet age,' I rarely saw either of my parents outside of work. Most kids took the bus or walked home, and our parents usually didn't return until around 6 or 7 in the evening. This left us with hours at home alone, free to occupy ourselves. Then, when summer came around, our parents' workplaces didn't offer, and still don't require, vacations longer than a week per year. This meant that, once again, much of the summer was left to our own devices. These devices became a substitute for the absence of our parents, providing entertainment and opportunities to learn. This highlights a flaw in the design of the United States' economic system, with tech companies and incidents being a consequence of this.

      Blaming the victim? Kids get scared and are ashamed in these situations. Fear and shame are not the greatest emotions to have when needing to make commons sense decisions, even for adults. That is why they choose suicide, or panic and keep it secret from those adults that can help. Children and even teens are not mature enough to vote, or to make some life choices for themselves. It is up to the adults to put in safeguards to eliminate exploitation. A parent can teach their child how to deal with this type of adversity but if that child screws up and knows that the parent told them this could happen, how likely are they to admit that they did wrong and are now in over their head?

Maybe ai can also help out in that topic. I honestly think this issue is being weaponizes not for the cause of child protection. Loading all responsibility to the companies is cheap. It is impossible to control all content timely, if you ask me there should be upload filter scanning before uploading. People need to grow up and take responsibility, not only for their own actions, but also the actions of their children. Your children, YOUR responsibility. You give your child a phone, YOU set it up. Not smart enough, LEARN!
    These people and their companies shouldn't be responsible for everyone and their kids.

    100% agree that a huge part of this is parenting (or the lack there of). lots of these issues would be resolved if parents were teaching and monitoring their kids on these apps (i know bc my parents did & i’ve never been in any unsafe situations online). however i do agree that there can always be more steps taken by these companies to make the internet safer and that this was an important conversation.

    • @laurenporteneuve4261
      @laurenporteneuve4261 3 месяца назад +2

      it’s understandable that some parents may not be able to keep up with these things for whatever reason. i also understand that kids can be sneaky (though good parenting can still deter this behavior).
      i think, as a society, we should all put more emphasis on teaching our kids internet safety so the burden doesn’t fall on parents solely. more middle-high schools can implement internet safety courses that also emphasize how to navigate social media, for example.

    It looks like all the tec companies have invested in some level of child safety on their platforms. But the questions are, 1. Are parents aware of these safety measures, 2. Do they know how to use these safety measures, Are they making any efforts to learn and use these safety measures. Educational support from the tec companies would help in this regard. 3.Do parents use these safety measures, 4. Are these safety measure robust enough to guarantee child safety? Guess everything can be improved. The Tec companies should identify the loss ends and fix it. This is a joint responsibility between the tec companies, law makers, the judiciary and Parents mostly. Even with the best safety tools parents have to pay attention to their Kids. They shouldn't shift the blame to only the tec companies. We are all involved. Let do this together. In my view no minor under 17 years by law should be allow on social media. Those of us who were introduce to social media at 25 years don't have much problems. We can easily filter and navigate ourselves to safety.

My question is shouldn’t you as a parent want to learn and figure it out if it means you can help keep your kid safer online because at the end of the day you are closer to your children and can have more of an impact on helping your kids than the platforms. At the end of the day the platforms can only do so much, but you are there physically with your children.

    At what point do we start to see and accept the real cause of these issues? It is the responsibility of a PARENT to monitor and teach their children the right values. It is NOT the responsibilities of these companies who are just doing their business to watch your child, who might I add, they don't even know has been born. Fire, deadly as it is isn't burning children every day yet it exists everywhere. Why? Because children have been taught that it is dangerous! This same caution should be placed on access to social media. If you give a child a phone, or laptop or whatever, then you have given them a portal to the internet which has all kinds of content. I think it is enough that these companies have tried to put in place safety measures for child accounts. The duty is left to parents to do their job and parent their children! If you fail in your job, you..... and not a stranger......should be held accountable for failing to be responsible for your own child!
