Teaching Kids to Sew- Tips & Ideas

  • In this video I share with you some tips and ideas that I am implementing as I teach my 3 yr old son to use the sewing machine he got for Christmas.
My son's sewing machine is a Kenmore 11206 (sometimes called Mini Ultra).
It is the same sewing machine as the popular Janome Hello Kitty machine {affiliate link: amzn.to/VwLBFm} without the Janome name. But after much research I discovered that Janome makes the newer Kenmore machines. So the machine we use is a Janome with the Kenmore name on it, basically. Either of these machines would be fine and be the same thing.
I DO NOT recommend teaching young children how to sew just based on their age. Know your child and ONLY teach them to use a sewing machine when you think they are ready.
I consider a sewing machine a power tool and if you don't know what you are doing you can injure yourself pretty bad if your hands come in contact with the needle as it's moving. Please be careful and ALWAYS supervise any child when they are sewing on a machine.
My son is very careful and meticulous in what he does so, as a parent I felt he was ready to begin learning the basics. I hope this video will give you some ideas and tips that you will be able to incorporate in your sewing sessions with kids or event adult beginners.
Stay tuned for more Sewing with Kids videos that I will be working on in the future.
    Things covered in this video:
    Winding a bobbin
    Threading the machine
Sewing straight lines on muslin scraps
Putting in pins and removing them as he sews
Lifting presser foot up and down
    Using the hand wheel
    Using the foot pedal

Are you kidding me? That was adoooooorable! Nice way to train the next generation of master tailors. I believe in the power letting kids create and make on their own. Your approach is spot on. Keep it moving forward. When he is ready I'll send my measurements so he can make my custom shirts.

Thanks so much for you comment, Scott! Much appreciated. He is quite the attention-to-detail type of little guy. He is 5 now and has sewn a few other things including his first quilt, some pirate pants for a themed birthday party, a few stuffed dolls and some smaller projects. Thanks for watching. :)

Hi Vanessa, I'm 74 and have been learning from your video tutorials which are a tremendous help to me. I just saw this video this morning and your son is absolutely adorable. As a mother that raised 2 loving and respectful sons it's wonderful to see how you teach your child that sincerity and respect, there needs to be more parents like you so our world will be much better better place. I know your son is much bigger now and you have a beautiful daughter also. You and your husband are very blessed💛💙

What a great way to teach a young child. Making him aware of the dangers, of using the right words, timing the project to his attention span... The way he talked proved that he really got the message and enjoyed it. What a cute little guy! Thanks so much, I will use your technique with my grandkids.

Oh my goodness! You are an AMAZING teacher. I was a teacher for 39 years. Your style and approach is so well done! You are also wise to allow your son to use the equipment because clearly, he is ready to use it. I am so impressed by his knowledge about sewing. One can tell that he really knows what he is talking about. He is not just reciting sentences. You should start your own sewing school. Many people can sew. But few know how to teach children to do it. Start your sewing school. You have the gift of teaching.

I started teaching my granddaughter, age 5, to hand sew. I didn't even think about using a machine. I decided to see if anyone else out there were teaching young ones. Love your video. PS I created her own sewing kit and taught her the tool's names. I punched holes in cardboard for her first lesson, that spelled out her name. She picked a new color for each letter. For those willing to teach, these young ones are sponges and will learn it all. My son, at age three, had to teach his baby sitter, age fourteen, how to use our electric can opener.

I just saw this video, your son is so cute with his sewing machine. You are a awesome mom. This video reminds me of my granddaughter sitting on my lap your son's same age and sewing quilt squares. I told her the same thing keep your fingers away from the needle, letting her feel the sharp tip so she knew it would hurt if she put her finger in the (no fingers zone) we called it. She made herself a little doll quilt. She is now 16 years old and we still have that little quilt.

My 12 year old grandson was watching me quilt and he wanted to do one for his younger brother. I had some left over half triangle squares that he arranged and put together. He had some great ideas and I worked with him but he took the lead. Then I quilted it for him and he proudly gave it to his 10 year old brother. It was a fun time with him. He was so proud of himself and so was I proud of him. The seed has been planted so let's see what happens next. Loved your little boy and how well he worked with you. He is very good on camera. Vanessa, I have two boys ages 4 and 6, and just wanted to thank you for this wonderful video. My boys want to learn to sew, thanks to seeing your adorable 3-year-old son work his sewing machine like a pro. They are now working on making their own 'truck quilts. with my IKEA sewing machine. I can't thank you enough for this video!

Such a beautiful video! Teaching young children independence and confidence especially at a young age is foundational. I do much the same with cooking/baking with my children. Love.

OMG, he is adorable. Thanks for this video, I was thinking about doing the same thing with my grandbaby who will be 3 in November. I sew all of the time and she is always helping. She has asked for a sewing machine and I will get her a real one too.

Your little boy is adorable. Thank you for letting us watch how you work with him. Very inspiring. I actually started learning to sew when I was 5 in brownie scouts. Hand embroidery, no sewing machine, but that’s when I fell in love with sewing.

Wow you just can't underestimate the intelligence of the little ones. I thought I would start with a group of 9 year olds (insurance!) but I see they are ready to grasp the principles much sooner. Good video.

I wanted to thank you for this video and your son is absolutely adorable! My daughter is 6 and now wants to learn to sew because she wants to make clothes for her American girl dolls so I was trying to figure out how to go about teaching her and found your video. I actually even started on the exact same sewing machine in pink and saved it for her just in case she wanted to sew because I don't think teaching a kid to sew on those kids little plastic machines is a good idea so I love that you taught him on a real sewing machine. I just wanted to tell you I appreciate all your videos and to thank you for making them for us.
