Barbossa honestly might be the best character in the series. He is a charismatic leader, a ruthless fighter, and a brilliant sailor. You get the sense that his crew would literally follow him to Hell and back. And you see why.
Even if Johnny Depp comes back, idk how well a movie would do without Barbossa. Even though... he was already resurrected once so what's stopping them from doing it again
Barbossa is the best captain out of all em in my opinion, I doubt Jack could navigate the maelstrom only a Captain of great experience like him and Davy Jones could get clear of this phenomenon on the high seas
As a retired watercraft Engineer in the Army who's sailed the 7 seas on a small army boat. that feeling of screaming into the storm while seeing purple lightning off the coast of Panama and seeing waves as big as mountains during a hurricane....I know that feeling well. A mixture of fear, excitement and awe at the power of nature. Like riding on a bucking bull only if you fall off you die. So you hold and scream Bring it! God I miss it. Most will never know what it's like. That's why I loved these movies. Barbosa and Davy Jones being my fav characters. No fear, Drill Sgt ruggedness. I'd follow them anywhere.

The way he says “Dying is the day worth living for” honestly convinced me that if I was part of his crew I’d trust him with my life going into the Maelstrom
The way Barbossa turns around at 1:06 always gives me chills. It’s almost as if he’s not sure Elizabeth is being truthful and that he even doubts his own abilities, but then his eyes absolutely light up when he says “Aye, that be true!” and assumes his role as the most capable captain in the entire bloody war.
See. Calypso made the fight fair for both of them. Barbossa was brought back to life on the promise he help release her. And she clearly likes Jack. Most likely because Jack is just himself, and doesn't care for the release of Calypso or not really. And obviously, the man she loves. So, instead of being a bitch, she made it a fair fight, where only one would be the survivor.
Right before she was released, she learned that Jones, the man she pledged her heart to, had betrayed her. By teaching the Court how to bind her. So why she would make this a fair fight is beyond me.
I really like the juxtaposition of each ship's crew dynamic. The Black Pearl's crew are all in sync, working in tandem like a well oiled machine, they're good to go despite knowing they're not immortal. Elizabeth comes to Barbossa and trusts him completely, telling him how he's needed. Barbossa, knowing the crew won't survive without him gets on the helm to do his part. If he dies, so be it. Meanwhile, on the Dutchman, Jones has to force his way on to the helm of his own ship and take control. It's not comforting when he does, he's questioned immediately by a man he can't stand. No trust, no respect. Of course they end up losing.
I love how Elizabeth smiles when Captain Barbossa take control of the helm. She knows that it's where he belongs and that with him at the helm they have a fighting chance.
Also, as Barbossa mentioned, all the power of the seas brought to bear against our enemies. He knows that by releasing Calypso, her powers are unmatched despite Beckett’s control over Davy Jones. The Royal Navy are clearly not mentally ready for the maelstrom, but the pirates are more than ready as they embraced the seas and storms.
There are those that whine that 2 and 3 are weaker than the first. On their own, yes. But they aren't meant to be seen on their own. 2 and 3 are the epic tale with a slow simmering build to this climax. It's beautiful.
The Black Pearl is really the most unexpected of battleships. It neither has the size, nor firepower to deal with major ships like th Dutchman. But somehow, it manages to beat her
Well it's implied that its supernaturally empowered, just like the Dutchman. Cause Jack Sparrow had to ask Davy Jones to raise it out of the sea. That's why it's so fast and infamous.
I believe (might be stated in the movie somewhere) that the maelstrom provided an even playing field. it slowed down the pearl or sped up the dutchman, negating the pearl's speed advantage, whilst making it harder to do broadsides and prevented use of the dutchman's bow cannons, thus negating the dutchman's firepower advantage.
I love the way Davy Jones reacts to the rain hitting his skin. You can tell for him it's bittersweet. It's like being reunited with your long-lost love, only to know that she'll never be yours. There's much emotion there, but the frustration of knowing what will never be, coupled with the longing if a different time all comes out in that scream. There's so much there. Truly amazing visual storytelling.
Bringing back characters that were killed even in supernatural worlds can be a lazy, and/or overused thing to do, but ressurecting Barbossa (I get technically jack came back too, but it feels more like being rescued from another dimension than from death) was brilliant. Especially for the ending of dead man's chest-with the heart, the telling to go save Sparrow from the locker, and Barbossa walking out. He is just a really enjoyable character and jeoffrey rush is awesome, shame 4 was so crap but at least he got to be great in dead men tell no tales.
"Dying is a day worth living for" hits so much harder when you remember how long Barbossa spent cursed, despairing, unable to die nor take any joy in living - he couldn't even taste food in undeath. He searched for years for a way to die, achieved it, and was genuinely thrilled to _live_ again
This final battle was incredible, I was in awe at the cinema. Such a brilliant setting. That's why I don't like the newer films. They just couldn't compare to this.
0:03 I never noticed before, but Jones puts his hand over the area where his heart would be when he sees the storm forming and then whispers "Calypso..." longingly. He knows she's been released. He also says _"She'll_ not harm us!" He knows Calypso is on his side for this fight.
Davey Jones 'Calypso...' as he looked up into the maelstrom, and subsequent expression of heartbreak on his face...he still loves her, but knows that his love has doomed him to a life of endless pain and conflict, longing for something which can never be tamed and will never be his. The scream of rage he lets out as the rain touches his face is both denial and acceptance of his tragic fate.
The Pearl and Jack Sparrow vs The Flying Dutchman and Davy Jones in the middle of a cyclone is still one of the most badass showdowns in cinema history
Elizabeth: Captain Barbosa! We need you at the helm. Cap'n Barbossa: Aye, that be true. Brace up yards, you cackhanded deck apes. Dying is the day worth living for.

I would've liked to have seen that. I don't think he would've made a difference though. Davy Jones was able to beat Jack, Will, Elizabeth and Bill with ease.
@@Darkstar263 it's a shame because it's always that damn claw of his that turns the fight. Jack cut the key off him and disarmed Jones, and the only reason why Jack didnt further mess him up is because Jones broke Jack's sword with his claw. And then Jack starts beating Jones with a log and only loses because Jones grabs it with his claw. I think the fights were meant to show that Jones isnt the most skilled sword fighter but his monstrous body makes up for it
I think those scenes were meant to show jack is superior swordman but can't win against a monster(davy jones). And by jones using his claw, audience realizes jones is not just an octopus head who takes orders from beckett, but a monster who is unbeatable withoust stabbing the heart. So overall, jack is better swordsman but jones is a better fighter
@@Bralucum he is screaming because they released calypso instead of killing her like he asked and this has made him even angrier than he was before the battle commenced
@@brewmaster2912 he does but she broke his heart a long time ago, that's why he he made a deal with the court to have her murdered, and she wasn't happy about that so she cursed him to his own ship and changed his appearance and basically made him immortal sort of by locking his heart in a chest but that also meant he could never feel love and warmth again, which is the ultimate punishment, that is why he is slaying pirates all the time to try and get some feeling of excitement or satisfaction, but he doesn't, the world of pirates in this movie is an awfully cruel one
Anyone notice that for a minute Jones softened up? That bit of hope on his face when he says "Calypso" then he falls back into the built up rage and anger he has at the world....Bill Nighy is a goddamn legendary actor
Barbossa was the real main caracter, he was the villain, turned good for caracter development, was the hero twice, and in my opinion the best lines and personality
I won’t lie, Jack cannot man the Pearl anywhere near as good as Hector, yea he’s great at those sick drifts but Hector is the only one to willingly sail into a maelstrom and sail out in relatively one piece. That’s a real badass navigator.
Barbossa really handled this scene like a boss. He’s been suffered for too long as the undead and unable to feel anything. Now finally free as a human, he’s ready to live every single second as a pirate, let alone enjoying a battle in a massive maelstrom.
I love the development of how when Elizabeth first said the words “Cpt Barbossa”, she said it with hints of fear and anxiety, and now she says it with a sense of urgency and need. The development of this dynamic is underrated.
In my opinion, this battle was and still is, one of the greatest moments in cinema history. Davy Jones, Hector Barbossa and Jack Sparrow, three of the most notorious and infamous captains, aboard the Flying Dutchman and the Black Pearl, the two most feared and powerful ships in the seven seas, battling together whilst also navigating an enormous maelstrom... Everything about this scene, from the build-up, to the characters' lines, to the music and the visuals. It's all stunning. I wish I could go back and watch this for the first time again. ❤
“Captain Barbossa, we need you at the helm!” Captain Barbossa is the best captain out of all of em in my opinion, I doubt not even Captain Jack can successfully navigate out of the Maelstrom only a Captain with great experience like him and Davy Jones could clear this phenomenon on the high seas
Jones was one of the the best characters of the franchise, he easily took over any scene and demanded respect. They could've went alot further with his character than they did I feel, he was amazing.
Pirates: We will create a maelstrom so we can have the advantage Flying Dutchman: BITCH PLEASE! I WAS BORN IN THOSE WATERS!!! Go straight in the maelstrom.
"BRACE UP YARRRDS ya CACK HANDED DECK APES! DIEING IS A DAY WORTH LIVING FORR!!" The fact that he has already died once, makes this the most badass line ever.
In the end it was Barbossa that captained the Pearl to victory over Jones, but it was Cunning Jack who won the day aboard the Dutchman. Seeing him at the Helm feels so right and he’s such a good actor. I love Jack but Barbossa might be my favorite character
Ive seem some interesting takes on 'Dying is the day worth living for'. I used to think it was Hectors way of saying 'Fuck it, if im going to die (again), let's make it fun.' We suffer all through our lives to get to this point and dying is the pay off for life, almost like he's given up but wants to out with one last hoorah. But I actually think its more complicated than that. The Pirate Lords were called together because the pirates very way of life was about to be destroyed, their very existence as 'pirates' is about to be terminated forever. A pirate lives for the passion of their lifestyle and everything involved in it, its what they LIVE for. Breaking it down he is saying 'Our very way of life, what we live for is dying, its about to die. The days that we live for are dying' He's not saying "(the act of) dying is a day worth living for" He's saying "The days we live for are about to die" ie; So we have to fight right now with everything we have to protect them. It's not a last hoorah or a throwaway, its an incredibly powerful rallying cry.
I think you can also take it as the fact that he can die is worth living for? By that I mean now that he is no longer cursed as in the first film. The ability to feel, eat and even die is worth living for. In contrast to Jones who cannot die conventionally.
I love the little touch at 1:01 with Barbossa staring at his head. Almost like it reminds him of his former immortality, where literally nothing could kill him. But now he's no longer immortal. And this time, there won't be any Tia Dalma to resurrect him.
I honestly love jones standing there and feeling the rain on his skin before letting out a scream of rage and hurt. That rain was the last touch he ever felt from calypso.

it would've been cool to see davy jones fight barbossa.
I think the fights were meant to show that Jones isnt the most skilled sword fighter but his monstrous body makes up for it
Yes
I think those scenes were meant to show jack is superior swordman but can't win against a monster(davy jones). And by jones using his claw, audience realizes jones is not just an octopus head who takes orders from beckett, but a monster who is unbeatable withoust stabbing the heart. So overall, jack is better swordsman but jones is a better fighter
True
0:20 epic battle scream
well, it isnt really a battle scream, since that wasnt the reason he screamed
@@Bralucum he is screaming because they released calypso instead of killing her like he asked and this has made him even angrier than he was before the battle commenced
Dominic Hoover lmao
@@southyorkshiretreasurehunt8513 I thought that he loved calypso again
@@brewmaster2912 he does but she broke his heart a long time ago, that's why he he made a deal with the court to have her murdered, and she wasn't happy about that so she cursed him to his own ship and changed his appearance and basically made him immortal sort of by locking his heart in a chest but that also meant he could never feel love and warmth again, which is the ultimate punishment, that is why he is slaying pirates all the time to try and get some feeling of excitement or satisfaction, but he doesn't, the world of pirates in this movie is an awfully cruel one
00:10 when you had plans but there's rain
Ha, are you afraid to get wet?

We all know a Barbossa in our lives. Some of us probably are that Barbossa.
Dylan Wight he must be a Leo ♌️ 😂😂😂
*Aye that be true!*
Anyone notice that for a minute Jones softened up? That bit of hope on his face when he says "Calypso" then he falls back into the built up rage and anger he has at the world....Bill Nighy is a goddamn legendary actor
"Full-bore and into the abyss!" One of my all-time favorite lines in a movie. Bill Nighy is such an amazing actor, his delivery is always perfect.
AREH YOU MAHD?!?!
@@chipmunkdoesvr8629 ha! You are afraid to get wet????
0:17 when you spent hours getting ready and your friends cancel last minute
The only way you could follow up that awesome Barbossa moment:
One of the best & most hilarious lines from Davy Jones.
Anyone noticed that when Davy Jones looked up to the sky and whispers Calypso, his hand moves to his chest? To which his heart is supposed to be
His delivery of "dying is the day worth living for" is my favorite line in all of cinema
Barbossa was the real main caracter, he was the villain, turned good for caracter development, was the hero twice, and in my opinion the best lines and personality
are you mad
davy jones:HAH YOU AFRAID TO GET WET
Holmar ya
Holmar that's what she said
I won’t lie, Jack cannot man the Pearl anywhere near as good as Hector, yea he’s great at those sick drifts but Hector is the only one to willingly sail into a maelstrom and sail out in relatively one piece. That’s a real badass navigator.
Barbossa really handled this scene like a boss. He’s been suffered for too long as the undead and unable to feel anything. Now finally free as a human, he’s ready to live every single second as a pirate, let alone enjoying a battle in a massive maelstrom.
"Dying is the day worth living for"
- **when you just need to kill the Final Boss**
Let's face it. We've all had days when we just want to scream like Jones.
I love the development of how when Elizabeth first said the words “Cpt Barbossa”, she said it with hints of fear and anxiety, and now she says it with a sense of urgency and need. The development of this dynamic is underrated.
0:21 when you're at the beach and you step into the cold water.
Two of my favorite lines in any film:
“Dying is the day worth living for.”
&
“Full bore and into the abyss.”
“Captain Barbossa, we need you at the helm!”
Captain Barbossa is the best captain out of all of em in my opinion, I doubt not even Captain Jack can successfully navigate out of the Maelstrom only a Captain with great experience like him and Davy Jones could clear this phenomenon on the high seas
I love that Davy Jones say's she'll not harm us as he knows its Calypso.
0:26 love this epic buildup to the epic battle!
0:55 5 year old you seeing the water in the tub drain
Jones was one of the the best characters of the franchise, he easily took over any scene and demanded respect. They could've went alot further with his character than they did I feel, he was amazing.
Me when she tells me to stop my Davy Jones impression 1:41
This movie aged well like a fine wine. I rewatched the trilogy (the first three only) the other day. And I must admit it is still ahead of its time.
“Ya ‘fraid ta get weyt?” Davy Jones is one of my favorite villains to quote
Pirates: We will create a maelstrom so we can have the advantage
Flying Dutchman: BITCH PLEASE! I WAS BORN IN THOSE WATERS!!!
Go straight in the maelstrom.
pirates didn't create the maelstrom it self, it was created by calypso after being freed from her mortal form
00:14 at this scene I can feel the emotions of Davy Jones.
Hector Barbossa vs Davy Jones (ship-to-ship fight)
Brilliant that Jack Sparrow's enemies face each other (though Barbossa is more a rival)
2 most feared ships in the sea doing a 1v1
This line helps motivate me to run/walk in the bad weather, it's delivered in such a badass way.
0:30 epic moment
It takes a leader on both sides of war to get others to follow them into battle. That’s what Davy and barbossa truly are.
Barbossa really said "I may die today, but at least I'll die sounding like a badass"
I love Barbossa/Geoffrey Rush so much 😂
"BRACE UP YARRRDS ya CACK HANDED DECK APES! DIEING IS A DAY WORTH LIVING FORR!!" The fact that he has already died once, makes this the most badass line ever.
1:42 the meme about wearing crocs brought me here lmao
Nobody:
Babies at 2 AM: 0:21
0:21 when you've soap your whole body and the water stopped running
Parents: "Be careful. Don't get wet, use umbrella. Wear a mask. "
Davy: "Full bore and into the abysssssahh!!!!"
i never get tired of hearing Davy say Abyss
Gibbs’s importance to the Pearl is so underrated.
In the end it was Barbossa that captained the Pearl to victory over Jones, but it was Cunning Jack who won the day aboard the Dutchman. Seeing him at the Helm feels so right and he’s such a good actor. I love Jack but Barbossa might be my favorite character
Love Davy Jones words, "She'll not harm us!"
I love that quote “Dying is the day worth livin for!”
The days that we live for are dying'
He's not saying "(the act of) dying is a day worth living for"
He's saying "The days we live for are about to die" ie; So we have to fight right now with everything we have to protect them.
1:21 Dying is the day worth living for....
Love this line! ❤
The original 3 movies will always be my favourites, especially the 3rd one.
Davy jones is still alive in the new pirates movie
Me as a kid when I finally made it outside after getting dressed and it started to rain 00:20
I quote pirates of the Caribbean, mainly Barbosa and Davy Jones, a lot. This is one of my favorite climaxes to a movie ever
I love the little touch at 1:01 with Barbossa staring at his head. Almost like it reminds him of his former immortality, where literally nothing could kill him. But now he's no longer immortal. And this time, there won't be any Tia Dalma to resurrect him.
