The word Reich wasn’t invented by the Nazis, the very fact they called their regime THIRD Reich indicates that it there were others that came before it. The term actual first used by the Germanic tribes to refer to the Roman Empire which was retroactively referred to as the first Reich and dominated most of Europe in late antiquity while the second Reich was the Holy Roman Empire which was a Germanic State founded by Charlemagne and was once the most dominant power in Europe before its later decline. Hitler being a megalomaniac, fancied himself as the new Charlemagne and as such named his regime the Third Reich indicating his ambition to conquer and rule over Europe much like the Roman Empire once did.
Of course none of this justifies an American president using the term unless you count America dominating Europe militarily via its control of NATO but it is far from the NAZI invention that its critics make it out to be.
