- British Steel has blamed high energy bills and the cost of decarbonising its business for its decision to shut its coking ovens in Scunthorpe, meaning the loss of up to 260 jobs.
But unions fear the decision could undermine the viability of the entire plant, where most of British Steel's 4,000 workers are based, and say they will oppose the move.

This is what happens when you sell off everything you have. Country is absolutely finished.
And the Chinese billionaires are asking for handouts from the goverment. The English government.
@@SA-ff9uc which they will get. Because its not their money, its yours.
100%agree with you .
Yip.. The Tory party then labour offshored our jobs and supply chains… I know who I’m blaming for supply chains being weaponised
Aint uk a rich country
Nations should own their own critical industries.
But but but... communism... evil of left, wokeness, labour...
Well, the British public have consistently voted for the exact opposite. So there.
@@HowDeepIsYourJesus The British public also voted for Brexit
@@petrolhead1077 They voted for a 'Tory' Brexit. And how has that helped the nation so far?
@@HowDeepIsYourJesus It hasn’t, that was my point
the mp who said we dont need steel is basically how we got into much of this mess in the first place...
The Tory MP likely got paid a nice kickback when the Chinese took the place over.
Sell off most of our national industries and then tell folk you're sorry . That's the UK today . No wonder I hate this country and it's politicians
Yes the same old story .sell everything off .make redundancies. Then find out 20 years later we are worse off . Sound familiar?
it is the politician you hate🫡
all the national infrastructure is in the hands of overseas competitors ?
Have you only just discovered that reality?
indians own/run it all, the irony
The Tory dream
@@3rodox Yep. They wanted a service economy. Now they've got one.
Since the 80s
Exporting steel production doesn't actually count as progress towards net zero.
That statement was made and it's extremely accurate. Absolutely insane to think that killing off the beast will eliminate all beasts. Better to be in control of the beast and have it work for you. Short sighted view to say that it there is no need for a steel. Industry in Britian
The business secretary said what?? That is absolutely insane. Of course you need a steel industry.
My thoughts are with the team at AFCO and those who were on DLCO, enjoyed working on both plants as a fresh faced grad in the mid 00s
They took Singapore on the Thames to the extreme... Basically wants the whole of UK to be a city state centered around London. Finance only....
Importing steel from other countries doesn't help the planet or UK economy
The UK is no longer competitive in steel thanks to brexit
Thatcher should never sold a nations industry to a foreign country Blair failed the country by failing to re - nationalise them .
Especially something as vital as steel.
I don't think you can still blame Thatcher 32 years on...
The Tories sold this plant off. So stop blaming PM's from decades ago.
If the Chinese are going to undermine British industry, then Chinese companies should not be allowed to own British industries. This could be politically motivated- nationalize it.
Maybe the government should subsidise the company? After all the government's actions led to these sky energy prices.
yes embrace communism. You go Britainstan 😂😂😂
Can't blame the Chinese taking advantage of dumb UK government . Government begged them to take over the industry ( kick can down the road)
UK sold every off in the 80s and now we lost the financial side due to Brexit. Might as well sell off the royal family...
French and German will not stupid and keep their core industry to themselves.
Get used to inflation then.
It was Chinese investors that bailed the company out when it was going to collapse. They are looking for subsidies due to rising energy prises. The government could have easily intervened and support a steel industry in this country. Not everything are foreigners’ fault. 🙄
In any given country, foreign ‘investors’ should not have their fingers in critical infrastructure/industries!!!
EXACTLY. That SURELY should be written in law.
AGREED
Unfortunately that goes against everything the Tories stand for.
You can either have net zero or have a steel industry. You can not have both. After all, you can’t make steel without coal.
you can make it without coal but the process uses much more energy
You can use hydrogen. But you need lots of electricity for that so if the electricity comes from coal and gas there is no point with it.
Thatchers legacy still lives on.
Altogether now...🎵🎶"Laaaaaand of Hoooope and Glorrryyyy? "🎶🎵🤔🇬🇧🤯🤕🧐👌😎👍
The love of money is the root of ALL evil.
Hundred percent
Why Britain talking about it all saucy
You voted brexit, the Chinese are coming
At this point in current events, to allow a domestics industry like steel production to falter is a national security issue. China, Russia, and Iran are creating a modern axis power, and the west needs to bolster their domestic manufacturing. Shuttering this plant is a goal of the CCP and it will happen with a quickness. Once it is shutdown, it will be hard to restart. Former employees move on. Skill sets are lost. Customers create new supply chains. It is hard to restart a lost industry.
@Christina Kirschner,
*Hear! HEAR!!!* 💐
Everything is for sale in the UK lol, country never focuses on wealth creation
Are we still strong and stable?
This is only the start 🤐
Wait until we french buy your food industry 🤐🤢🤮
being born and raised in Scunny, spent 33 years there, on and off the works, but left the town just before covid. And seeing this makes me devastated. Scunny is Knackered because they sold Scunny out.
French and Germany did the right thing and kept a large percentage of companies themselves. Unlike Brexit britain.. stupid Tories sold everything in 80s and 90s
Good evening steve, greetings from Germany, near Cologne and not far away from the heart of our former steel industry (The Ruhr Area), maybe you've heard about Krupp, Thyssen, Mannesmann, Hoesch.
For me the above video is too much focused on environmental issues though, of course they are currently significant.
The crises in my country started in the 70s. Imported was cheap steel from third world countries, even from China. Our Industry could not compete, in 1979 a steel
plant in Hattingen, near Bochum had to close, number of employees: ca. 6000.
The Henrichshütte of today is a museum, in those days one could hardly believe that Hattingen with 25,000 inhabitants could survive. Today it is a nice, attractive town.
We built a steel plant for lot of workers at Rurkela in India, foreign aid.
Some of the former steel giants restructered, highly successful Mannesmann, now a part of Vodafone, the days of manufacturing tubes for gas are gone.
Dortmund (Hoesch) is the partner town of Leeds, they are in a certain way similar.
We still have a diminished steel industry but it is competetive after years of suffering. - wish you all the best -
Putin is coming for your precious eu.
@@beaterbikechannel2538 Yawn, another prediction, maybe one should not forget that EU members are the best customers of British Steel.
People cannot stop buying cheaper products. The jobs are there just being shifted to cheaper productions in lower-cost production countries. Without jobs, people choose the cheapest options.
This vicious cycle creates more and more prosperity to the mainland 😢.
I bought a velosolo sprocket. £30 . Uk made and they last forever.
This should be bought by government and now its time for the uk to start owning its own again and never be sold on again to private
It’s interesting that the Gov support to a vital UK industry amounts the the cost of approximately three Premiere League strikers.
Perhaps loans for conversion to electric arc furnaces?
You don't seem very proficient in business. You can only sell something for what the market will bear. Admit it, that firm had been run into the ground and was a pile of junk. I'm sure they got the best deal whilst imposing green restrictions. Make it any more expensive and they would walk away. CGN already did this with the nuclear programme.
As an outsider, just wondering if this area voted for Brexit?
Only 66% did...
Sorry for people losing their jobs but 260 is a tiny number compared to what Amazon, Microsoft, twitter, Google etc did. And TATA cut way more than 260jobs in the past years. The steel industry has gone down hill for decades especially when our gov decided to go for net zero.
Imagine if we shut our steel industries just before ww2.........
Doesn't bode well.
Unbelievable
lf the steel industry indeed has national importance, then the government should subsidize.
...they'll be many casualties and jobs lost in our quest for net zero.........
Every time the government give sport have gets part % of the factory and start control of the £££ have been drained from the factory.
Don't blame the Chinese. Business will always look to maximise profit. The self-sabotage of Net Zero causing sky high energy prices is why we cannot hold onto our industry.
no it's the Chinese
@@XerrolAvengerII governments have allowed the industry to go global and consumers need for cheap products. This is disaster capitalist at work. We should stop looking to blame a country but look at if we want to continue with cheap goods and do we want to continue to pay the price. A system that makes the rich richer and poor poorer.
Oh, now the nationality of a company cutting jobs is important eh?
The only thing this country makes now is a MESS.
Force them to sell
Plen'y of Coke in Scunny thorpe !
Steel should be considered as part of the critical infrastructure. We cannot dependent on other nations for everything.
There’s plenty of whiny moaning sorts work in those places and it must be hard to make it run efficiently and get things done, there’s no rushing about because everything is dangerous and lots of staff on good wages and pensions and expensive maintenance constantly
Why did they sell it to the snake, sorry, the Chinese, in the first place?
Need to start nationalizing steel in the west or at very least bail them out.
Somehow Tories voters will blame labour for this......
That's why the locals need reminding they're to blame for this. They voted Tory and the Tory sold the place for a tasty little kickback. Paid offshore "naturally".
History repeats itself. Sell off your lifeblood and you will soon see the demise of you infrastructure. Economy needs steel end of. You cannot ever think that importation of commodities will end well. That's insane, never mind the impacts it has on your very own economy. Save the steel industry
the mp,s that have put the u.k. in this position should all be ashamed of themselves
privatize everything they said, it would be fun they said
Not only that they've shafted a furnace. There should be absolute uproar about that alone. It's an asset soon to be gome never to return, just making China stronger in the market
No, the eu wouldn't have stopped this, if not made the sell-off happen faster.
Great news for the environment.
Need to work on weeding so much foreign ownership out of the UK economy if possible - otherwise we are just too vulnerable to political whims.

I laughed at that term once during high school welding class. I remember being 16 lol
That’s called British these days
Didn't know Chinese owners running our British Steel..Who running UK..
Is this place a joke im sick of this country, they have had billions in help because it makes no money. They have kust had 180Million last month and now theyre planning on building an EAF electric arc furnace. This needs to stop, now!
🤗 best way to cut CO2!
I suppose my working in HOTELS isn't producing results in lowering CO2. Maybe it's not hotels employment to lower CO2 in factories. Maybe I should work something else. Well, whatever! Going to the US and working for sane people who want to keep their businesses working is not only the sane choice - it's the only choice!
Time to nationalise the steel industry , the rail industry and re open the mines
Not exactly the fault of the Chinese when we f**king sold it to them 😂😂
Similar was hapeen in Galati from Roumania...20 years ago...
Now is time from west to going down...
Imagine what the Chinese own and control around the world, food, infrastructure, power, mining, governments asleap at the wheel
Britain should never have left important industries in the hands of foreign countries, above all China. If the steel industry here is destroyed in the name of net zero then only China will profit. They are not interested in green restrictions on their industries and any savings made in Britain by ending the steel industry will be swamped by emissions from China. I fear many jobs could be lost for very little, if any, environmental benefit.
ECAE
So the this government doesn’t think the UK needs a steel industry especially when it comes to domestic use (and military projects)? Right ….. well done tories for allowing another industry to fall by the wayside!
wow Propoganda4 can't even use the english language properly.
What are you referring to? Your comment lacks context
Can we have someone who can ask intelligent questions ?

Let another private business buy it or buy it from the previous owner through the state.
This company is moving to Russia lol

Sorry but I can not feel sorry that a coking plant has shut down , I do however feel sorry that these people have lost their jobs and a more environment friendly way of producing steel should be found where workers will still be employed .
There is NO environmental way of steel production. When Mad Vlad Putin blew up the Nord stream pipes he pumped out more CO2 and methane then every steel UK factory has produces in the past 50 year by a factor of 4O. Didn't see the tree huggers moaning about that....
China's Central government is 51 USD trillion in debt.
CO2 for the win in 2023.
