  • British Steel has blamed high energy bills and the cost of decarbonising its business for its decision to shut its coking ovens in Scunthorpe, meaning the loss of up to 260 jobs.
But unions fear the decision could undermine the viability of the entire plant, where most of British Steel's 4,000 workers are based, and say they will oppose the move.

At this point in current events, to allow a domestics industry like steel production to falter is a national security issue. China, Russia, and Iran are creating a modern axis power, and the west needs to bolster their domestic manufacturing. Shuttering this plant is a goal of the CCP and it will happen with a quickness. Once it is shutdown, it will be hard to restart. Former employees move on. Skill sets are lost. Customers create new supply chains. It is hard to restart a lost industry.

Good evening steve, greetings from Germany, near Cologne and not far away from the heart of our former steel industry (The Ruhr Area), maybe you've heard about Krupp, Thyssen, Mannesmann, Hoesch.
For me the above video is too much focused on environmental issues though, of course they are currently significant.
The crises in my country started in the 70s. Imported was cheap steel from third world countries, even from China. Our Industry could not compete, in 1979 a steel
plant in Hattingen, near Bochum had to close, number of employees: ca. 6000.
The Henrichshütte of today is a museum, in those days one could hardly believe that Hattingen with 25,000 inhabitants could survive. Today it is a nice, attractive town.
We built a steel plant for lot of workers at Rurkela in India, foreign aid.
Some of the former steel giants restructered, highly successful Mannesmann, now a part of Vodafone, the days of manufacturing tubes for gas are gone.
Dortmund (Hoesch) is the partner town of Leeds, they are in a certain way similar.
We still have a diminished steel industry but it is competetive after years of suffering. - wish you all the best -

If the steel industry here is destroyed in the name of net zero then only China will profit. They are not interested in green restrictions on their industries and any savings made in Britain by ending the steel industry will be swamped by emissions from China.
