Great presentation and classic examples. I love Rien (and the Rien Intense).
I also enjoy the costus in Opus VII from Amouage's older library collection. I haven't smelled the newer release, but I think the formulation is similar. Note that it's a very heavy green-spicy but in fenugreek and nutmeg, and a bit of a savoury gourmande which can put some off. I love it (your description of Pistil reminded me of it).

Thanks Doni! I’m glad you appreciated the approach I had for the introduction. Matvey is one of THE best contributors to Fragrantica, bar none. ☺️

Pardon, the long comment. 😊I loved hearing about these perfumes. I did not know that they featured Costus. I am definitely going to take a gander at Perfume Court or eBay tomorrow 😍
I'm not sure if you may have attended among the gazillion packages you get the little unique, incredibly smooth aged bottle of Costus I sent you? Feedback from friends that I've gifted remark unexpectedly of among the cornucopia of sultry notes perceiving almost gourmand maple or gram cracker- that brought to mind the smell between a kitties neck - head between the ears to me....
I am hoarding a few remaining 15 plus year old dried root slices but had little restraint using small amounts of this particular Costus tinctures in most of my compositions throughout the Vireo years. I'd love to see more perfumers houses get creative with the Costus replacers. I guess that issue is some of the replacers or just not quite there yet- but I mean that's a lot to have to replace! Goat to sweat to Orris, fleshy florals & so much more! 😅

Great video JJ, funnily enough I remember you mentioning working on this one in a stream and was just wondering when it was coming! I'm excited to try these as I'm only familiar with three of them! I'd recommend sampling Rogue's Fougere L' Aube, a rich, green aromatic fougere with a really nice "dirty hair" costus note.

Beautiful beautiful enigmatic intro. I should try more stuff with costus. The most sebaceous perfume I have is Under my skin from Franchesca Bianchi. Beautiful and poetic but heavy and thick and can be annoying after several hours like a beautiful person who just taking too much place and attention in the room and laughing too loud and too long. But I’m easy to get annoyed by majority of thick and sweet scents. And yes it has costus, I’ve just looked at its fragrantica page.

I tried only musc tonkin from your list. It’s very difficult for me even I do love animalic, especially vintage style animalic. But it is very special and worth to experience. Also in tropical humid climate where I live some animalics behave more I mean MORE dirty then they do in dry cool climate. Musc tonkin was behaving better in winter. Still too much for me. And I’m getting almost climax from Tabac taboo of the same brand.

Ooh, Tabac Tabou is so sensuous!

@@JJColb I didn’t mean literally climax, haha. But yes it is so sensuous and so exquisite. It is a masterpiece of this brand. Perfumer has made a wonderful melody. Not just tabac, narcissus, some aromatics and animalics. I’m not so easy to be impressed by modern “sexy alluring animalic neovintage” I despise Salome for example and many other.
