Not quite the same but there's a scenario (will take a few sessions to get through) on Arma 3 inspired by Ghost Recon if you haven't yet tried it out called Hunter Six Special Operations. May be something you'd be interested in. It's a shame they took GR and R6 down the roads they did.
I'm sitting here relying on tiny teams to make the games that GR and RS should be. Ground Branch has my faith. Arma 3 is also similar to GR, especially if you mod it, and it has a reasonably sized team.
rainbow six 3 and lockdown on gamecube for me was my first rainbow experience, enjoyed them a lot, it was always 007 nightfire or agent under fire, medal of honor, allied assault and european assault as my action set piece games and rainbow was harder and alot more tactical
Raven shield was the peak of Rainbow six. So much effort put into a game. Tons of weapons with superb sound, tactics, graphics, everything was so great.
Ravenshield is the best and the one i still go back to always. They should just do an HD remaster of Ravenshield with map making support but they wont.
There was an HD remaster mod project for Raven Shield. But it got shut down by Ubisoft of course. They don't want you playing RS. They want you playing what they are currently selling.
R6 then: Tactical gameplay, balanced AI, interesting and versatile missions, multiple choices and opportunities R6 now: -NOOOO YOU CANT JUST KILL ME FROM FAR AWAY AT THE START OF THE ROUND!!!!444!!! -haha MP7 goes brrrrrrrr
I agree. It's becoming like Overwatch. Part of the fun was bringing different metas to the table like Glaz with his mobile scope, Zofia and Clash with self revive, Blackbeard's 50HP shield (don't, just don't fight me), and the list goes on and on. All the pros and the streamers are cool, I honestly hate them cause they'd whine about a certain strat a team was using and claim it as a "noncombatable fight, automatic loss, to strong" situation. Gimme a fricking break!
@@ZirkyPlays All subjective, but R6S was very interesting early on. It was counter strike with destructable walls and floors. I feel like they jumped the shark with the theme of the game, too whacky fun time. Also haven't been maintaining the quality of life very well.
@@winlover37 They decided to focus too much on "balance". The problem being that every time they add a new operator or tweak a gadget then all the balance calculations need to be redone. This leads to ever increasingly complex balance calculations. My advice would've been to use the preset objectives in casual mode but allow for custom objectives in competitive. This frees the team to no longer have to focus so much on whether such-and-such bomb site is truly OP as that can happen organically. Time becomes far more important as you aren't going into the match exactly knowing how the defenders will be defending or where. Second, create new maps over new operators. The gadgets have obviously gone from somewhat believable to ridiculous as UBI has clearly struggled to come up with new ideas. Maps on the other hand they would be able to constantly create and come with the added benefit that they won't impact balance calculations. So even if they avoided the first idea of custom locations then they still avoid the compounding complexity trap.
One of the best features you failed to mention on the OG Xbox version of RB6 3 and Black Arrow was the voice control of your squad. Instead of selecting from menus to "breach and clear", you could just say it into the mic and they would respond. All of their communications with you would also come over the headset only, while the game audio would be seperated into the speakers. This simple bit of immersion is sadly missing from newer RB6 games...
I think John Clark is the main character and all the original RS operatives that were in the book. Later in the series Ding will take more ground from the stories. Loiselle Lois, Weber Dieter, Eddie Price and many more. But mainly John Clark and because Ding is his son in law in the series he's one of the main characters through the series.
@@infinitesimal9001 Clark is in fact the main character in the book as he is literally “Rainbow Six.” Rainbow, being the code name of the entire unit (consisting of two teams with Ding being leader of Team 1) and Six being the call sign of a units leader. There is even a Rainbow Five…second in command Alistair Stanley.
@@infinitesimal9001 It is part of the “Ryan Universe.” Clark is in most of the Ryan books, and Ryan is POTUS and actually forms Rainbow on Clark’s recommendation. Good grief, I know way too much about that series. Lol.
Man, if Ubisoft waited a few years, then Patriots would’ve been the 2019 Modern Warfare BEFORE the 2019 Modern Warfare. Also the Vegas games were my personal favorites of the series, and I wouldn’t have gotten into it or Tom Clancy’s other works without them.
Did you ever play the first rainbow six game? You literally had to spend a minimum of half an hour planning and plotting coordinates on a map schematic. If you didn't the other 2 teams of bots would just sit at the spawn doing nothing. You literally had to draw out all the waypoints of how you were going to execute the attack against the terrorists and plan your escape.
@@azagedon the people who played the PVP version would just click one dot on the pre-mission map, grab Ding or Santiago, a CAR15, HBS, primary mags and whatever pistol and head on out haha
I honestly miss the tactical shooter Rainbow Six games. Siege practically abandoned the idea of a tactical shooter soon after it launched in order to pursue the hero shooter trend. Siege would work better if it wasn't shackled to a franchise based around tactics and hardcore shootings. R6 Vegas 1 and 2 were fast enough and the environments were great for the modes they offered. the destruction system Siege has would also work well in an actual R6 game.
@@stefanmarinkovic1229 that's probably because it's the only tactical shooter in the competitive scene. and the game being competitive doesn't particularly make it great. if the game aimed to only satisfy the competitive crowd it'd lose a lot of players.
@@frostsoul4199 I feel siege has probably one of the best casual and competitive modes in combination, as most game lean one way or the other siege has been able to tread the line fairly well. This has lead to a strange mixture of balancing but I still think it keeps R6's core tenant of tactics and planning (comparative, seriously you need to see the backdowns people have done on the maps) along with quick thinking changes on the fly that came with the later entries seen in the casual mode.
@@stefanmarinkovic1229 The term "tactical" tends to take on different meanings depending on the kind of game we are talking about. For a competitive shooter, tactics are a important part of the basic gameplay formula but that tactical element takes on an entirely different flavor in a competitive PvP multiplayer environment. The way you play Siege on a tactical level is entirely different than how you would play R6 1 through 3 on a tactical level. A big part of this is single player versus competitive multiplayer. In a single player focused title, you have a lot of freedom to slow down the pace and focus more on realistic, immersive tactical situations. As we saw in the first three games, the lack of 100% laser focus on competitive balance allowed the developers to focus more on capturing the feel of being in an elite, highly capable team even if that meant that enemies often felt underequipped in comparison.
I remember playing Rainbow Six 3 Raven Shield when I was around 15. It was unlike anything I had ever experienced. I remember when I failed a mission and a guy on my team died. I literally had tears in my eyes after realizing that you could not bring back dead soldiers. They had real names, a history and everything. After that, I wanted to only do a mission if my plan. I wasn't going to lose another member on my team. I'm sort of disappointed with the newer games.
Rainbow Six 3 / Black Arrow for Xbox Live is still the best gaming experience I've ever had in my life. Was in high school at the time, and had so many clan matches on Team Compete and Gamebattles. Will be an unforgettable experience for me! No other game will ever come close to the feeling I got during those 2 or so years.
Fun fact, I live in North Carolina and a former Red Storm employee who worked on OG Rainbow Six and Rogue Spear was the Game Art teacher at my high school for one year. And I was lucky enough to take the class with him!
The original Rainbow Six is still a fun game today. The option of creating plans for your teams, but also for yourself to participate in them is fantastic. The multiplayer was also AWESOME. Especially because it allowed mods to add your own weapons, character graphics and more.
I haven’t looked at many of the comments so I’m sure this was said already but it’s just crazy how much content game companies used to give you. Oh here’s 2 expansions with 7 missions each and we’re giving you the second one for free. Now it seems like many games release give you the basics or bare minimum and sell you more later. Things really have changed
Siege doesn’t scratch that itch. Should’ve been Rainbow Six Vegas 3 or RS: Patriots.. Maybe now we’ll get one although I have a bad feeling that the success of Siege is gonna completely change the franchise for good..
@@MediQate i think a good idea would be to simply make Siege its own multiplayer franchise, then continue Rainbow Six as a tactical shooter with more emphasis on the campaign and terrorist hunt co-op mode.
In Rogue Spear, bugging that oligarch's house with the operative with a heart sensor was tough. Almost felt like a splinter cell mission in retrospect.
This is easily my favorite type of content you create for the channel, as much work as I know it is. I look forward to these videos, even when it’s for games I don’t care for! ❤️
Sadly as long as they keep getting money from their new ideas, they will never go back to how things used to be. Even with their other games, look at ghost recon right now, from an hardcore first person shooter it went to an third person battle royale game (which did recieve backlash from the fans).
Rainbow Six 3: Raven Shield is still the best and arguably the only one that still has it's identity, unlike Seige. I will never know why they couldn't just call it "Seige" without the "Rainbow Six" trademark. I blame everything on Serge Hascoet (Ubisoft's former Creative Director).
I must say that the quality of the video capture of such a wide range of titles is like nothing I have seen in any other survey. You must have put a lot of work into this and someone needed to document this history.
I'm over 60 years old. Been a gamer for along time. Watching this video ,brought back memories,I have enjoyed playing Rainbow 6 games for years.Thank you.
What great memories, thanks for the video. I'm one of the modders from the R6/Rogue Spear days, the ARMM NATO mod series. It was good to see the old game in action again.
I still remember R6 Siege's Closed Beta. The teams still were Blue and Orange, but they had logos that were throwbacks to Rogue Spear and Raven Shield. It's pretty sad that they removed them for the open beta and the global launch, it was such a nice detail. The round timeline didn't make it past the closed beta, it was as the name suggests was a timeline of different events during the round, when someone killed someone else, someone died, defuser dropped, defuser picked up, etc.
The planning phase in the first game is something I have tremendously fond memories of. I still haven't played anything else that felt like that game. I appreciate the hard work on this doc. Well done.
I wish they made a new one with a a proper campaign focusing on high damage combat, smart AI and proper tactics instead of zombies and competitive multiplayer. Also wish Siege was more grounded with its designs and mechanics. It wasn't that bad at first but as time moved on it got crazier and crazier... Not to mention the writing for the operators looks like something akin to Donut Steel OCs off deviantArt.
I get that bro. The original 20 operators, the "Pathfinders" as they are called in-universe, are people that you would totally see in actual CTU. Like Sledge whose purpose is a sledgehammer, or Doc whose purpose is to be a field medic. But the newer operators just make no sense. Iana, a photosensitive albino that uses holograms to find targets. A flashbang could permanently blind her, but no it's fine because she has sci-fi contact lenses.

i’ve never played the first rainbow six game but it’s insane the level of technology and logic they had for the late 90s. maybe i just haven’t played enough games from that era but the planning phase and ability to pick different loadouts just seems wild to me for the time it was released

Rainbow Six: Rogue Spear - Incredible tension filled atmosphere and gameplay. My first Rainbow Six game. Rainbow Six 3: Raven Shield - Amazing graphics for that time. Similar tense atmosphere. Played for many hours Rainbow Six: Vegas - Mindblowing graphics! Was extremely taxing to then hardwares. Interesting changes to the game mechanics. Rainbow Six: Vegas 2 - More or less same with slightly better graphics. Loved the progression system Rainbow Six Siege - What a comeback by Rainbow Six! I wished they had launched Patriots because I am more of a singleplayer guy but Siege was the most perfect Rainbow six game ever. The tension was there, the tactics were there. An intelligent multiplayer shooter like no other.
Plus RainBow Six Vegas 2 had a great customization feature that makes modern military shooters to shame . Yes it wasn’t perfect but I loved that game . I played more RSV2 than any other title . Also played the others and I do play siege . But idk Siege can be good ... until someone Cheats lol
First Rainbow Six: Vegas was extremely repetative, boring techno demo with too much brown/orange filters, dull single player campagin and not enough content, plus annoying wave survaval elements, but the 2nd one is just 10 times more fun to play, even it's single player campagin is well thought out. Also i think Rainbow six game prior to Raven Shield had the best levels in original trilogy.
I loved Vegas at the time, but Vegas 2's addition of character customization & a sprint button instantly made it more fun to play imo. Also, what about Lockdown?
It’s 2022 and I just wanna say, we do indeed have “Extraction” instead of “Quarantine” it’s a fun break (especially with friends) from regular siege! 💜
The funny thing is Siege started off mostly grounded and realistic, the gameplay was tense and fascinating, but then as years went on it became more and more corny and the operators became more and more sci-fi. Then they ruined all the maps by “redesigning” then and took out terrorist hunt… yeah it’s a mess now, they need to just start on something new
Now that the 3 main Tom Clancy's series are covered (Splinter Cell, Ghost Recon and Rainbow Six), you could make one video with the other minor series: The Division, H.A.W.X (that Ace Combat rip-off), EndWar (that forgotten RTS game) and the recently but extremaly controversy Elite Squad.
The Vegas games were peak Rainbow. If we could get something new like that (in a different location of course), I'd be very happy. I can't get into competitive multiplayer games. I need a campaign to truly enjoy a game.
yes man, the deal is that somebody knows how to do things and you end up being owned, or let's suppose he is in your team and he ends 30 - 0, that means that your game was not even valid.. you went strolling here and there, but in terms of what you enjoy or how much you affect the match, it is near to nothing. In Dota for example I learned to play so well with a couple of heroes that I almost feel sorry when guys get killed, they respawn and as soon as they appear I kill them again.. That is what happens online, I feel that if I buy Raibow 6 I would have a very bad time, I saw some people do things like killing somebody knowing their possible location, but not seeing them really. And that really puts me away, I dont think I will ever buy Siege..
My introduction to the Rainbow Six series was Vegas 2, and whether it's praised or hated, it has a special place in my heart, and it has stuck with me ever since I first played it, and I still to this day find myself booting up the game every now and then
I would love for R6 to return even more to their roots. I'm getting a bit old for PvP now, I just want to play a tactical shooter with my similarly old friends. So we can try and get through some difficult and well curated levels using tactics in the planning stage, and team work too, rather than relying on our not so quick reactions. Unfortunately rogue spear isnt available on new hardware, I would just like a remake of rogue spear.

I just want GR and R6 to do a reboot of their original ideas. Especially GR. Give me a Ghost Recon that is hardcore FPS and realistic.
Not the falling simulator that is the latest entry?
Not quite the same but there's a scenario (will take a few sessions to get through) on Arma 3 inspired by Ghost Recon if you haven't yet tried it out called Hunter Six Special Operations. May be something you'd be interested in. It's a shame they took GR and R6 down the roads they did.
So true ...
I'm sitting here relying on tiny teams to make the games that GR and RS should be. Ground Branch has my faith. Arma 3 is also similar to GR, especially if you mod it, and it has a reasonably sized team.
Well... there is the Advanced Warfighter subseries on PC if you haven't played those.
The best one was Rainbow Six 3: Raven Shield. Still play it to this day with a huge online community.
That'd be us? Hehehe. Everyone feel free to join us on Discord!
rainbow six 3 and lockdown on gamecube for me was my first rainbow experience, enjoyed them a lot, it was always 007 nightfire or agent under fire, medal of honor, allied assault and european assault as my action set piece games and rainbow was harder and alot more tactical
RS3:RS was the best for sure. Although Siege isn't as good it's probably the best one since RS.
I wish I could get it to run on Win10 but so buggy
Raven Shield is incredible!

Raven shield was the peak of Rainbow six. So much effort put into a game. Tons of weapons with superb sound, tactics, graphics, everything was so great.
The swan song of R6, if only we could get an official R6 title like Raven Shield again...
Rogue Spear was the best. But of course Raven Shield was also amazing.
@@emirtimur1557the first one was amazing too, I just like the third one the most since it is basically like the previous two but way better graphics.
@@lisazkc256the gameplay was slowed down significantly though. In the first two there was side stepping to aim while moving
And then Lockdown exist started to tarnished the series
Damn, dude. Great video. I cannot imagine how long something like this takes to make. Props to you for creating such detailed documentaries.
Ravenshield is the best and the one i still go back to always. They should just do an HD remaster of Ravenshield with map making support but they wont.
There are some HD hit effects mod and shader mods on the Tactical-Gaming Discord. And there are new maps.
Thankfully, Ravenshield community is still alive somehow and there are amazing mods available :D!!
I think Vegas is the best
There was an HD remaster mod project for Raven Shield. But it got shut down by Ubisoft of course. They don't want you playing RS. They want you playing what they are currently selling.
R6 then: Tactical gameplay, balanced AI, interesting and versatile missions, multiple choices and opportunities
R6 now: -NOOOO YOU CANT JUST KILL ME FROM FAR AWAY AT THE START OF THE ROUND!!!!444!!!
-haha MP7 goes brrrrrrrr
;)
@@willmeadows3233 r6s was never good tho
He also failed to mention the Dreamcast version of Rogue Spear had mouse & keyboard support, despite criticism of its controls.
The Xbox live package came with R6 3, and even for a demo the servers were really active and super fun. Great community for a demo in the early 2000s
Love the look back over the series’ history. Though you did miss out on some games ;) Thanks for making this! A very enjoyable watch/listen.
I didn't jump into the Siege train but this video is amazing and important for the preservation of the legacy. Congrats Nick!

I remember Domingo "Ding" Chavez being extremely OP because he's the main character of the book.
@@WaveMattson correct, John Clark is the main character in the Rainbow 6 book and I believe it's all part of the Jack Ryan series.
@@infinitesimal9001 Clark is in fact the main character in the book as he is literally “Rainbow Six.” Rainbow, being the code name of the entire unit (consisting of two teams with Ding being leader of Team 1) and Six being the call sign of a units leader.
Same here man!!
That original rainbow six was soooo good when it came out. Loved planning out everything.
Gonna love the day of its online multiplayer days through MSN Zone server
"Observation, planning, execution."
Sounds like every single Ubisoft game after Vegas
Did you ever play the first rainbow six game? You literally had to spend a minimum of half an hour planning and plotting coordinates on a map schematic. If you didn't the other 2 teams of bots would just sit at the spawn doing nothing. You literally had to draw out all the waypoints of how you were going to execute the attack against the terrorists and plan your escape.

Yeah siege is it’s own thing. It literally is not a rainbow six game
@@christophersalinas2722 I mean, atleast they tried, right?
You can say that but the game has been alive for almost 6 years. It's sure not the same but the concept is there.
What isn't real about it
I honestly miss the tactical shooter Rainbow Six games.
I mean out of all competetive fps games r6 siege is the most tactical IMO
@@frostsoul4199 It's a good mix between comp and casual fps

Hopefully ubisoft wakes up and takes it back to the good old days! I miss Rainbow Six 1-3!!!
Sadly as long as they keep getting money from their new ideas, they will never go back to how things used to be. Even with their other games, look at ghost recon right now, from an hardcore first person shooter it went to an third person battle royale game (which did recieve backlash from the fans).

Thank you for your service. NATO mods were great
Bro, do you remember Pie's Tactics? I remember playing the WW2 D-Day mod.
Greetings. Are you still distributing that mod? I want to play that mod.
Ahhh Rogue Spear! Hours of fun. Before shooters were mindless for kids with gold and red guns!
Back in 97 it was a brilliant game ,the planning of missions was fun ,one shot kills kept you on the edge of your seat.
The planning phase in the first game is something I have tremendously fond memories of. I still haven't played anything else that felt like that game. I appreciate the hard work on this doc. Well done.
Vegas 2 hands down to me the best. Terrorist hunt pvp. Character customization. And that main menu music. Mmmmmm
I blame modern gamers for the regression of this amazing series
While modern gamers aren't the only ones to blame, I do agree that the introduction of a large number of new gamers that we got did transform our gaming world for the worse in the past 10-15 years:(

@@tfwthelsdkicksin6083 I would blame the company but they are simply following the money trail. People love playing dress up in video games and that is a perfect market to exploit apparently

blaming the audience is the easy way out, in the end it was the publisher who decided to water down the realism and authenticity.

Rainbow Six 3: Raven Shield - Amazing graphics for that time. Similar tense atmosphere. Played for many hours
Rainbow Six: Vegas - Mindblowing graphics! Was extremely taxing to then hardwares. Interesting changes to the game mechanics.
Rainbow Six: Vegas 2 - More or less same with slightly better graphics. Loved the progression system
Rainbow Six Siege - What a comeback by Rainbow Six! I wished they had launched Patriots because I am more of a singleplayer guy but Siege was the most perfect Rainbow six game ever. The tension was there, the tactics were there. An intelligent multiplayer shooter like no other.
