I've had all three, the BMW drives really well, but price of parts is about twice as bad as the Mercedes and was less reliable. It's nearly useless off road even with the right tyres. The Rang Rover was beautiful to be in and drive but the build quality is a let down after all these years. Superb off road and the best on the highway The Mercedes has been the most dependable and super handy off road and towing. The most reliable and cheapest to maintain of the three. Ride quality is the worst of them all thanks to the ladder chassis and torsion front suspension, but still comfy for 4-6 hour + drives.
My friend drives his big 4x4 the same as he drives his hot hatch so it horrible going around corners or round abouts because you feel like your going to tip over.

It's ironic that BMW's are often regarded as high end, and more importantly reliable cars, yet the reality is that they're just not and have many design failures, and that once Land Rover managed to get rid of the worst of the BMW junk the L322 became almost reliable. The early L322's reliability wasn't helped by BMW wanting to stop the FFRR overshadowing the X5 so hampered the power output of the TD6 and in doing so left the engineers to use a horribly high stall torque convertor to overcome the sluggish feeling it left them with. This then killed gearboxes like nobody's business.

The ML is way different than the other vehicles shown here: The average Mercedes owner has multiple Mercedes, for different tasks. The ML is meant to be a work boot, that you drive for hauling, towing, light offroading and overlanding specifically, bringing on pets and cargo. It's the car you have around for snow season, so you do not get snowed in. I don't wear my heavy duty boots every day, but when I do, I sure sit in my ML.

It's interesting looking at this now at the end of 2023. The true measure of quality/greatness/etc./etc. is what people think and how many are still going after a few decades. How many MLs or L322s are still going, or more relevant, in demand? The E53 will always be the best X5 as they got it so right from the start. They even went out of their way to call it a SAV rather than SUV. The ML is just another typical Merc and the RR is well, a money pit. I currently own a 4.8is and I drive it daily. It ticks all the boxes.
How could the Range Rover possibly win that comparison, even the dashboard took some negative comments on the move compared to the BMW. The handling looked very poor, and build quality is not always the best.
They are very well built ,newer models come with adaptive dynamics which compensate the body roll by stiffening the anti-roll bars .. The Range Rover Sport stays flat no matter what you do ,that is for the 2006> .
I have had all three and drive an l322, the Merc and BMW interiors are just like the saloon cars... boring and drab with bits falling off. BMW bought LR for the luxury end 4x4 and that's what you get, pure class inside and the stuff which fails tends to have a BMW stamp? The same way everyone was convinced that VW were ultra reliable etc.. etc.. clever marketing at work. The Germans haven't made decent cars since the 90's as they build to a profit margin these days and rely heavily on brand loyalty... something the Asian manufacturers are starting to chip away at.

I haven't driven the M Class but recently owned both a 4.6is and L322 TDV8 at the same time, and sold the X5. i think they have been a bit biased against the range rover its clearly not on the lowest suspension setting it should be set lower for doing something like they are putting it through
Yes, it's for sure best off road, but least reliable car of all three. BMW has the best looks, Mercedes is a nonsense of a car and Range Rover is most luxurious, most comfortable on road and perfect off road. 05:20 LOL that RR just ended with a wheel in the air
Bmwx5 = drug dealer car . I like the Range Rover . I have a Classic which is pretty reliable and a l322 which is not reliable indeed . A ML 55 amg is maybe the best …. I don’t know
L322 steering wheel is nice but it has a problem. Whenever I honk in anger at someone and mash down on it I sometimes also hit the stereo controls and change the song. Feel so stupid when that happens lol.
Didn't buy my RR for going around a track, fooking waste of time Tiff! That is the problem with these shows... lets see how fast it goes round a track, just like in the real World.
Bonkers off road....nothing does it better? Except maybe a Toyota Land Cruiser. Ask the UN why they prefer them. Toyota Land Cruiser station wagon is unarguably the most popular large sport utility vehicle, SUV in Nigeria. As the flagship of the Toyota family, the Land Cruiser, like other Toyota models in Nigeria has dominated its segment for close to seven decades without any strong rivalry in its class. For instance, there is no state governor in the country whose vehicle fleet is not dominated by the Land Cruiser, not to talk of presidential fleet. The military and para military, prominent private individuals across the length and breadth of the country also see the Land Cruiser a status symbol. Even the United Nations too, have found the Land Cruiser as the favourite large SUV in the execution of its tough assignments in many parts of the world where the terrain are very difficult.
The UN prefers the Land Cruiser due to price and availability of service and parts. In fact thats most of the reason 'officials' buy them for their fleets. That and they're pretty difficult to break.
Dragon Butt also parts would likely be a lot easier and cheaper to get for the Toyota, that’s not to say it’s the go to military vehicle, let’s not forget the G Wagen 😎
range rovers that were built by bmw have crap engines and electrical and are heavy turds x5 costs to much to work on and bmw v8 have issues x5 they show the 4.6 best model yet no ml 55 amg hmmm the ml is body on frame not a unibody and it has a Borg Warner transfer case with low range option also a 5 star crash test rating way more capable vehicle hands down
Same old thing with any car programme - lets take a set of vehicles and do something they were never really designed to do and the rank them accordingly. Interestingly we dont see them being used as they should, but perhaps that just shows an agenda or bias.

The L322 Range Rover's - for want of a better word - range of engines was in comparison to the W163, rather simple:

4 years after launch two Jaguar V8 engines replaced the BMW lump (and a new gearbox (ZF 6HP26)), leaving the engine range looking like this:
V8 | 4.4 V8 (Jaguar AJ41)
Supercharged | 4.2 V8 S/C (Jaguar AJ33)

Supercharged | 4.2 V8 S/C (Jaguar AJ33)
TDV8 | 3.6 V8 TD (Ford AJD-V8)
Between 2010-2011, the Range Rover had another update with new engines and a new gearbox (ZF 8HP70) for the V8 diesel:
V8 | 5.0 V8 (Jaguar AJ133)
Supercharged | 5.0 V8 S/C (Jaguar AJ133)
TDV8 | 4.4 V8 TD (Ford AJD-V8)

4.6is | 4.6 V8 (BMW M62TUB46)
3.0d | 2.9 I6 (BMW M57D30)
The range was updated in 2004 with new V8 petrol engines and a refreshed 6-cylinder diesel:
3.0i | 3.0 I6 (BMW M54B30)
4.4i | 4.4 V8 (BMW N62B44)
4.8is | 4.8 V8 (BMW N62B48)
3.0d | 3.0 I6 (BMW M57TUD30)
The Vogue 4.4 was pretty much the RR base model, HSE and 4.2 Supercharged nearer top of the range. The 3.0 diesel is very very slow. I have a 4.4 after selling my ML270, same as X5 both SUV were as the L322 is still a proper 4X4.
If only these were ever designed to go around the track and that's the problem people expecting them to be good "sports" cars that we end up with all the coupe sport SUV monstrosities of today
SUV does stand for sport utility vehicle... sport
Lewis Conway stands for Superior Utility Vehicle if I’m not mistaken.
The Range rover almost rollover
1988 Fiat panda 4x4 would put all three of these to shame
Still the best ML w163 2.7 diesel automatic
1.2 milion km in 2023
With hard work trailers. 3.5 tone
I honestly thought the Range Rover was going to tip over
Range Rover L322 the best as always. The best looking Range Rover.
What engine did the range rover have
BMW 4.4
£60,000 on release. In 2021 I've jus bought one running, £900 . Still there is nothing like driving a Range Rover :-)
The best 4x4xfar!
I'm in the middle of a 15.000 acres forest with an ML no tuning.....
Where the HILUX is working the ML is working too!
Which is the best off-roader out of the rhree??? ML!!!! No doubt!!!!
I drove a stock ML430 up the Olympic mountains last week, had to turn around when the snow ice pack reached 2 feet deep. Love this vehicle offroad
Range rover is the best suv for off road not handling , x5 isn't suv ,it's similar sedan
Tiff has a real thing for the Range Rover steering wheel😐
Body roll of the range rover gives you the thrills you need to overcome boredom
Heavyweight, High GC, Bodyroll's r imminent all over..SUV'S Not made for Racing, its for Anywhere go Comfortable ride..with lots of Air and Space..
Song sauce @ 4:00 please
Of course there are better off roader than the range rover but none of of them can be compared to it.the range rover is on a class of its own .its a off road limo
i think they have been a bit biased against the range rover its clearly not on the lowest suspension setting it should be set lower for doing something like they are putting it through
Where is the Mazda cx7
wasn't launched then back in 2002 i'm pretty sure
I was expecting clarkson to storm onto the set out of no where and fire off on how amazing the range rover is.
Range rover sport would have been a better choice in that test !
Mercedes is the best a amg version would of won and beat the Range Rover
the Range Rover and the BMW are both BMW's.
Dragon Butt also parts would likely be a lot easier and cheaper to get for the Toyota, that’s not to say it’s the go to military vehicle, let’s not forget the G Wagen 😎
range rovers that were built by bmw have crap engines and electrical and are heavy turds x5 costs to much to work on and bmw v8 have issues x5 they show the 4.6 best model yet no ml 55 amg hmmm the ml is body on frame not a unibody and it has a Borg Warner transfer case with low range option also a 5 star crash test rating way more capable vehicle hands down
So the BMW wins the most pointless test for a luxury 4*4!!!
Next time drop the range rover down it will hold the corners better
Hey lads, how bout uploading some more fresh videos ?
Same old thing with any car programme - lets take a set of vehicles and do something they were never really designed to do and the rank them accordingly. Interestingly we dont see them being used as they should, but perhaps that just shows an agenda or bias.
Next review ...let's take 3 sports cars off road ...ffs
Y el tiempo se encargó de demostrar que LOS TRES son iguales en su pésima confiabilidad.
And time was in charge of demonstrating that THE THREE are equal in their terrible reliability.
ech III have you ever owned one of them?
@@marcwheels6718 of course. I have owned one BMW and two Range Rovers (never again). And several friends of mine with the same nightmares (MB, BMW and RR). Trust me.
Por supuesto. Tuve un BMW y dos Range Rovers (nunca más). Y varios amigos míos con las mismas pesadillas (MB, BMW y RR). Créame.

Don't forget a big 4×4 isn't a race car your asking it to be something it's not thats one of today biggest problem most are asking there vehicle to be something there not its like asking a body builder to be a ballet dance in high heels.
Yea but reliability for ranger rovers during that time was pitiful you do better buying the bmw 😭
X HAVANA STAR X Range Rover was fitted with BMWs 3.0 6cyl Diesel engine
And the BMW reliability of that era was still pretty bad, so you'd be better off in the merc
Dragon Butt Incorrect the 3.0d is a very reliable engine
@@Mr330d Very reliable "engine". One which parts of the world did not get. And the rest of the car was pretty much spit and kleenex lol
Dragon Butt Comfortable spit and Kleenex though
Driving my l322 fast is like sitting on an elephant and making it run. Can it do it? Yes but you really don't want it to happen.
The Range Rover is still the best off road. The BMW isn't really an off roader
👍
You have to wonder how dangerous a 17 year old SUV is on a sharp bend.
God 5th gear was shit wasn't it !
The X5 is USELESS off road
yeah, maybe but best on road by a country mile.
@@MrKeefrichards no doubt! But then why bother with an SUV? Just get an estate
@@angrymuffinsb try one, not bad off road.
Pointless test. Anybody drive SUV on test track.
it not a car!
A Range is a Range. The other 2 are council house fodder. Ridiculous test who the fuck drives like this.?????
? Really Tv shows from a few years ago now getting posted. And this is ment too be the current FIFTH GEAR CHANNEL.
Not sure where it says anything about being 'current'. Its nice for those of us who havent seen the series in its entirety.
@@dragonbutt exactly 👍
Range Rover is worse plastic shit I ever sit in, would not own one if it was given to me
But the BMW can't off road for shit
