Hey one month later but I have been studying android development for a couple of months and I learnt a lot. Currently Google adopted Kotlin as the official language therefore all the new learning material is being written having this language in mind. But when you analyze APKs, as this girl did, you have to decompile it using tools like jadx which gives you the filestructure containing mainly java files. So in my opinion you need both java and kotlin: Java to understand what the code is doing, and Kotlin to create apps in order to test / send requests or intents to the atacked app if that makes sense. You can also use java for the last thing too, but I suggest Kotlin.
Related to prior knowledge, I would say you need to know how apps work,i.e. their file structure and a bit of architecture (MVVM, MVP) and how receive / send data. I suggest you study the book Head First Android Development, 3rd Edition - O'Reilly. Read it from cover to cover and create one or two apps containing everything from the book focusing on data transmission, persistence and external storage. A bit of data transmission between apps too (I think the book doesn't cover that in depth). That would take you like 2-3 months.
