  • The primary work of the Holy Spirit today in a Christian's life is his sanctifying believers to be “spiritual”-to be characterized by inner life and external behavior that conforms to the will of God.
However, another result attributed often to the Spirit in the New Testament is gifting.

John Piper's book with the title Providence is definitely worth reading, though it is 760 pages long.

I’ve always struggled with the idea that there would be a partial removal of spiritual gifts, as in the ending of Apostolic gifts, but the continuation of the more normative gifts.
It’s sort of an awkward stance to argue in favor of because there’s not really an explanation of this in the Bible. It ends up being a dead end to “agree to disagree” and I hate ending conversations in that way, where both sides aren’t left contemplating.
But I do see value in claiming that the Holy Spirit gifts providentially. Our church structure is very different from those early churches. I think that some churches may be more healthy than others, where the body is working together as one, and other churches, where the Holy Spirit places godly men to “snatch” others “out of the fire.”
1 Corinthians 12:7 says, “7 But to each one is given the manifestation of the Spirit for what is profitable.”
And verse 11, “11 But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually just as He wills.”
One might be able to say this specifically for miracles, based on verse 10.
I think providence is overlooked on a lot of occasions because of the lovely term “Narcegesis.” People want to read themselves into scripture in certain ways they’re not supposed to be. People strive after the power of the Holy Spirit as if it’s something to attain, when it’s something that is given according the providence and profitability of the church and, most importantly, to the profit of God.
While providence is miraculous, I don’t think it compares to a miraculous act in the sense that miraculous acts done by Jesus or the Apostles had specific purposes, while providence is a miraculous state of grace that we, as Christians, live in.
Like Paul says in 2 Corinthians 12:9-10, 9 And He has said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for power is perfected in weakness.” Most gladly, therefore, I will rather boast in my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may dwell in me. 10 Therefore I am well content with weaknesses, with [c]insults, with distresses, with persecutions and hardships, for the sake of Christ, for when I am weak, then I am strong.

I’ve often wondered why it’s so hard for everyone to agree that the sign gifts have ceased considering the fact that nobody sees the sign gifts anymore.
We have plenty of fakes and charlatans and misunderstandings about what those gifts were but we don’t have the gifts in action

@@ryanvanwey6367 I think that’s a hard one to argue against. People see what they want to see, especially in postmodernity. I’m not saying you’re wrong, in fact, I’m saying you’re right, it’s just a difficult thing to go against when the veil is over their eyes.
From our perspective, we may see that they have ceased, but the reality is that there are many people out there claiming to be something or claiming to do things in Jesus name, which really aren’t. The even bigger problem is biblical ignorance and illiteracy of the people who follow these spiritual leaders or “apostles.” This is far bigger than NAR or Jehovah’s Witnesses.
I think the world is desperate and crying out for God, but in its desperation, seeks the path of least resistance instead of the the one which is promised hardships. The path of least resistance leads to the “itching ears.”
We have examples of this all throughout the Bible, namely, the Israelites being the number one subject. Though, on any given night, you might be able to search for some sort of RUclips live feed of a revival where an “apostle“ is “healing” or giving a “word” from God. You can see the desperation on peoples faces for whatever they’re seeking to be true. The reality is that they are placing their hope in that man or woman and not in Christ. They’re placing their faith in that man or woman and not in Christ. This always leads to “deceiving and being deceived” unfortunately.
There is a real faith problem in Christianity. What’s crazy is that the New Testament is filled with examples of what faith truly looks like, the prime example of our Lord, Jesus Christ-the one whom these people say they believe in.
Some people might think they have swimming pools of faith. Why would you need swimming pools of faith if the Lord said that the faith of a mustard seed is enough to move mountains? It’s a difference of authentic faith and synthetic faith.
I think the deeper problem with the topic of spiritual gifts or desiring the power of the Holy Spirit is that people are putting more faith into their faith, which is vanity, than they are putting their faith into Jesus. I hope that makes sense.
People want the bread and fish Jesus offered miraculously, but not Jesus Himself.
