- Colossians 3:16 is one of the most well-known verses in Scripture about singing, yet we often fail to recognize how the command to sing fits in the broader context of Colossians 3 regarding the nature of discipleship.
The first fifteen verses of Colossians 3 could be summarized with these four commands. Disciples of Christ must:
1. Put to death earthly passions.
2. Put on spiritual affections
3. Live in loving harmony with the body
4. Let the Word of Christ dwell in you richly.
This is what it means to seek things that are above.
Which brings us to the focus on singing in the rest of verse 16. After all of those commands for disciples, Paul adds the following (I’m going to read from the Legacy Standard Bible here, which retains the Greek word order):
Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, with all wisdom teaching and admonishing one another with psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with gratefulness in your hearts to God.

Amen to this. I know these things and have conveyed them to my Pastor and the music leader, but some of the congregation rebel against music that expresses sound doctrine, and prefer emotional, unBiblical hot messes of so called Christian worship music....grief....
and....singing is worship and praise to Him. Music was created and designed by our Lord as a language to communicate with Him and express our heartfelt emotions lovingly. It is not entertainment. Singing with music, has an orderly tone with sound biblical doctrine in words.
