I bought a gun from a magazine article in 1994! Smith &Wesson 640 Jack Weigand 4PJ Executive Part 1

  • When I found this, I was perusing the used guns on a local gun shops website. All it said was “640- Ported” and it piqued my interest.
‪@revolverroundup‬ said the 640 is probably the best carry J frame ever made being a centennial (internal hammer) and all stainless, so I wanted one.
When I got to the shop and looked this over, I realized it was something special. A lot of internet searching brought me to the American Handgunner article about the Jack Weigand 4PJ Executive 640, which is exactly what this gun is.

@@silenceismycanvas Yes 1999 was around the time I moved away from Pistolsmithing and primarily into the scope mount and tool business. It was a tough choice but it needed to be done. I have been doing work but not for the general public. That is an entirely different story, the general public is VERY hard to build guns for. They think it is McDonalds as far as delivery times and many times have no idea of what to expect when they receive the finished product.

It's a great piece of Handgunner history, worth far more than the $599 you paid. The "Cool Factor" alonr is worth $600 and I'm not even a fan of porting. I have a 640 no lock from the 1990s (my back up gun before we went to Glocks). It is buttery smooth from use over the years and "if I could only have one handgun" I would pick the 640. I got my second 640. The gun was nice and tight but it had some scuffs on the brushed stainless finish so I glass beaded it to a satin finish that hid all flaws. Mine I think is a bit older than that one. You better check for light strikes if they lightened the mainspring because the firing pin is frame mounted and the hammer does not have a great deal of mass. I don't see the point of ports on a .38 unless some kind of lightweight model.

    • @crankygunreviews

I only shot 10 rounds out of mine, but it was fine- the ports are just to make it more manageable- a lot of people hate the J frame in 38 or 357- I have strong hands so I’ve never had an issue.

I have a M640 38 special an it really is a nice gun. mine is unmodified and is a no dash. in the cylinder frame window it says "tested for +P+". it has and does spend time on my pocket. the weight aids in control of the gun, and the small grips still gives me a 3 finger hold. I don't really like the stretched 'J' magnum 357 versions of it. the slightly smaller (original ) "J" frame just feels better for me.
