Wow - beautiful playing! All sorts of cheekiness hidden within too - especially at 4.55 and 5.07! I could listen all night.

Incredible. That shifting! And he kept throwing in surprises that worked! Like the tune choice, in minors and majors?? I love it when music goes different way than you expect but that totally suits it :D well done!

sad reflection on the state of traditional music in scotland - very little traditional about this playing.

      How so?

    • @neilgow77

Celtic music is a living tradition, Scottish fiddlers are historically encouraged to create new tunes and add to the “tradition”. It is not museum music. Do you think Nathaniel Gow knew he was writing and playing “traditional” music. No, he was making new dance tunes and writing airs he thought sounded good. Do you think Robert Mackintosh was writing trad music when he included minuets or other “classical” music in his collections? Or JS Skinner writing traditionally as he was challenging us fiddlers by pushing our technical limits. The beauty of our “tradition” is that it is alive, we can play a 600 year old Gaelic air then follow it with a tune written this morning. This music doesn’t belong in a museum where it collects dust and dies, it belongs on programs like these, in a pub, or in your kitchen.

It’s Human nature to evolve and that reflects trad music because you can put your own stamp on it (like our accents) but never forget where you came from. You’re entitled to say what you like or dislike but to make a comment like was a bit rude to be honest. Benedict is clearly an amazing fiddle player and while his style may not suit everyone it’s evident that he respects it and that wouldn’t happen without him growing up with Scottish traditional music. Music was around a long time before we came along and it will be around a long time after we’re gone. So don’t own it, just enjoy it
