  • (2 Mar 2012) HEADLINE: Few Americans take immigrants' jobs in Alabama
    ---------------------------------------
CAPTION: Alabama's tough new immigration law isn't producing farm jobs unemployed Americans want. Many of those who have ventured out into the fields to pick crops have quit after a single day, telling farmers the work is too hard and not worth the pay. (Oct. 20)
    ----------------------------------------
[Notes:SOT Titus Howard, Birmingham, Alabama: "They think the work is so hard, so they just turn around. They up and quit."]
ON THE FARM FIELDS OF ALABAMA ... THE VERDICT IS IN...
THE STATE'S TOUGH IMMIGRATION LAW JUST ISN'T WORKING OUT.
[Notes:SOT Keith Smith, potato farmer: "You know, they're putting Alabamians back to work but I my experience that I've had that ain't too good at what they do."]
KEITH SMITH SAYS MOST IMMIGRANT WORKERS LEFT AFTER THE LAW TOOK EFFECT...
SO THIS POTATO FARMER HIRED AMERICANS.
PROBLEM IS ... HE SAYS ... MOST SHOW UP LATE, WORK SLOWER... AND ARE READY TO HEAD HOME AFTER LUNCH.
SOME EVEN QUIT AFTER JUST ONE DAY OUT IN THE FIELD.
[Notes:SOT Casey Smith: "There's a Hispanic that works for us. I say, 'He makes anywhere from $70 to $100 in a day.' I said, 'If you can keep up with him and do a good job, you can make that.' But they're not physically in shape to do it and probably not mentally tough enough to do it some of them."]
OVER ON THIS TOMATO FARM ... THE STORY'S NOT MUCH DIFFERENT.
[Notes:SOT Brent Martin, American tomato picker: "The bending over and if you're not used to working and kneeling down and bending over and constantly up and down all day long is the grueling part of it, it really is. Other than that it's not any harder than anything else you do."]
WITH A NINE-POINT-NINE UNEMPLOYMENT RATE ... ALABAMA IS ALMOST ONE PERCENT HIGHER THAN THE NATIONAL AVERAGE.
TOMATO FARMERS SAY SKILLED FIELD WORKERS CAN MAKE ANYWHERE FROM TWO-TO-THREE HUNDRED DOLLARS A DAY.
UNSKILLED WORKERS MAKE MUCH LESS ...
AND FARMERS SAY MANY AMERICANS ARE NOT PHYSICALLY FIT AND SOMPLY DON'T WORK FAST ENOUGH.
[Notes:SOT Jerry Spencer, chief executive of Grow Alabama: "It's just going to take body conditioning, mental conditioning in order to earn enough money to make it worth a day's work."]
POLITICIANS WHO SUPPORT THE LAW SAY OVER TIME MORE UNEMPLOYED AMERICANS WILL FILL THESE JOBS.
THEY INSIST IT'S TOO EARLY TO CONSIDER THE LAW A FAILURE.

Illegal immigrants work 12 hours a day for $70 and no medical benefits. And if he gets hurt then he’s out of a job. Pay them like Americans, $15 an hour, medical and paid unemployment for if they get hurt. The American worker will not lower their standards and they shouldn’t.

      Agree.
Prices of food will go up though. But fairness is more important.

If you're looking for a job and can't take a simple one, you just want the money. Tighten up, already! I'm a janitor/cleaner and have been for the most of the last 22 years...only now am I starting to "make it". And it's still a struggle at that. Life is ruff. I now own a camper, have a (somewhat) decent studio apartment, my own CD recorder, microphone, guitar, amp, Music Maker (& Deluxe version) for PS2 (a complete studio/mixer in one package...fill-in instrument samples and everything else), FM microtransmitter (Part 15), and Terk TV transmitter/receiver kit (2.4 MHz range). I also do all my own shopping (adjusted for recent Type 2 DB diagnosis in June 2022), cook my own meals, and have arranged/recorded my own material on CD (with and without guitar/mic) and DVD. And I'm a Yahwist Sabbath keeper who tries to read my Bible very day and attend worship when possible (in-person or livestream).

this just highlights the huge problem with obesity in this country I've been to Alabama I've never seen so many fat and out of shape people in my life it would do them a world of good to get out there in those fields

what American people don't see (Republicans) is immigrants are humans and after living in some place they institutionalize and at the end they start feeling love for that place, is not all money if you see this people, they live very simple they are not buying expensive stuff wearing Brands etc., probably this people feel more love for USA than many spoiled Americans., this people know a lot about farmland and giving them the opportunity to stay here probably they can rebuild the farm industry and help to create good things in the USA more farmlands will bring down prices in everything do you realize we pay 5 dollars for one pound of strawberries if we create eggs ,milk, cheese, etc etc we don't have to import and pay more , we also create jobs because not everything is picking vegetables , the industry is so big ., the 70% of the supermarket in Florida is imported ,you never though why the salaries in Mexico are so low and almost everybody eat healthy because Mexico create everything they import just a few things I am agree to deport criminals but some people are so hard workers., But this is just the beginning be prepare for raining days, they are cumming. mat are exactly and us debt is impossible to pay

It needs to rot simply because they would not give Americans labor's the same opportunities to work and support their families.like they did for the illegales.....Kerma

      @solarstone6641 4 года назад

......wow that's spelling needs work. First shut the hell up you can't even provide for illegal immigrants when your struggling yourself. Americans don't do shit for them because they don't need to. Ever of a work permit? Lol I wouldn't think youre that smart anyways...

How do you think Latino family's survive??? Apart from having to support themselves in your country and still send to support their family... Latinos will do anything to help their family that's a big difference between you white people who always find an excuse to b!tch about everything... Now if you make enough money in those jobs do you really think white or black people are going to willing to work in those jobs???

Why don’t America put the huge population of prisoners to use and get them doing some hard labour , instead of acting like gangsters all day in prison.

So in other words what you're advocating for is for law enforcement trumping up charges against minorities, the poor, etc..when there's a shortage of farm workers? Some people need to study history
