Yes, you can import custom papers in PNG file format to Rebelle via the 'Select Canvas' window. These papers need to be tileable so that there are no seams visible when creating high-resolution files.
I think blend modes are not intuitive. I mess with them and have no idea what they're going to do, so it takes a lot of trial and error for me to get any desired effect, especially with dual brush. This tutorial helps, but I think I have a long way to go.
