A local DJ in my hometown recently retired. She was the DJ for a rock station for over 40 years. At her retirement party, a bunch of bands and singers sent videos of well wishes. But Nickelback sent a video wishing her well in retirement, but also said, "Sorry for making you play our crappy music." (this was the height of the hate meme) Just goes to show they love the publicity, and will gravitate to whatever it may be

I think it's primarily the age range of people that used to listen to Nickleback grew up and tried to distance themselves from the younger teens getting into it. It happened with Nu Metal when the older fans started getting into _actual_ metal and took the piss out of nu metal teens, even though they probably still secretly liked it.
