  • Part of the Twelve Cars seris. A test of two true 80's icons, the fabulous Lotus Esprit from the 007 movies and the fearsome Porsche 930 Turbo!
    We take two iconic cars to the Cheddar Gorge in the UK and compare how they have fared in the 30 + years since they were released. Comparing the Lotus Turbo Esprit and the 911 Turbo was fabulous fun!

    I am lucky enough to own both an Esprit turbo and a 911. My 911 is n/a but has full engine rebuild plus upgrades and a bit of weight lightening and is pushing out about 255 bhp. My Esprit is standard with alloy fuel tanks, header tanks, elise seats etc so a fair bit of weight shed.I love them both but so so different. funnily enough I use the 911 for pottering about town and when I want a real drive I always take the Esprit. It feels so much nicer to drive, almost intuitive , all the instruments are at your finger tips and driving is effortless. the 911 I had to install a short shift kit as the throw was ridiculous, to me the 911 feels like driving an 80's car, the Lotus feels more modern, The 911 is heavy but more powerful. they are actually almost neck and neck performance but you have to really wring the 911 and take control, the Lotus is more natural.I am also a trained emergency services driver so I do use them both at capacity when permitted, both great cars..... however I also owned a TVR Chimaera which I recently sold with a custom 4.7 Engine that would performance wise destroy both of these and was my favourite by far albeit the hardest to drive.

      the 911 is a 1985 3.2 and the Esprit is an '88 stephens but the same engine as this one

    • @Number27
      @Number27  7 лет назад +2

      Hey James, thanks for the comments. Totally agree that the Esprit is by far the more natural car to drive. You have drive around the 911's characteristics whereas the Esprit is far more neutral. Thanks for watching!

    I've watched this video more than a few times are really do love the contrast between these two fun cars. I'd go for the Lotus but am physically too big for it. While the German car is built to accommodate much larger people, and that choice would not be a disappointment at all.

    80's Turbp Porsches are all laggy , I have an 86 944 Turbo and it's ho hum boring until 3000 rpm and then the boost kits like a sledge hammer. I was going around a city street intersection in first gear and was getting on the gas pretty hard, when it hit three grand it broke lose and I got almost sideways without really trying at all. The 911 Turbo was knick named the widow maker for a reason (lift off over steer had something to do with it as well, lol.

    Drive wise, the Lotus wins, built quality, Porsche wins. Look wise? I personally like the Lotus more. Price difference? The Porsche cost about 3 times more than the Lotus. Does that make the Porsche 3 times better? Maybe...

      Shoddily made beautiful cars. Power to weight ratio was remarkable for its day plus it handled quite well and had lovely styling but the build quality was rubbish as were most British cars of that era.. I was never so glad to sell my Esprit S 2 with the possible exception to the big valve Europa I had before it. Now I own a beautifully designed and constructed Porsche 981 Cayman S which is pure nirvana compared to those shoddily made dreams turned nightmares.
