- My 16" MacBook Pro M1 Pro long term review - I've been using the 2021 MacBook Pro to around 500 hours, and I've formed some opinions about what I would do differently if I bought this now. Should you choose the MacBook Pro 14 vs 16? M1 Pro vs M1 Max? I touch on all these things this week.

I have the 16" M1 Max for game dev and I honestly couldn't imagine giving up any screen real estate. The weight is negligible to me, and when I take demos to local meetups or other team member's houses, I like have a screen large enough everyone can see/play games on. I haven't taken it on a plane, so that might be a consideration for people that fly a lot, but I can say the only thing I regret about this machine is the price!
Idk much about game dev but does ARM architecture affect you at all? Its not known much as a gaming machine
@@kairyonaznable20 M1 Macs have the Rosetta 2 translation layer for Unreal games, and the performance has been acceptable. I think Unity is capable of making M1 native builds, but I'm not sure. For Python based Pygame 2d games, compiling the code for M1 is no problem since all the tools are open source and don't rely on API dependencies like NVIDIA shader libraries or rendering libraries like 3D game engines require. Before the M1 Max, I was using a 2020 iMac with a 10 core i9, AMD 5700xt and 64GB of RAM. The M1 Max runs circles around that machine. I commonly run Unreal Engine, Blender, Photoshop, Xcode, Firefox and Safari at the same time. It handles the extreme workload pretty well, although I have hit RAM ceilings a couple times. All in all, for game development in the Apple ecosystem, the M1 Max is the best you can get. It's still a niche market, but that's why I chose it.

16" MBP should never be lighter than what it is now. It handles heat greatly, unlike the previous 16". If you need to travel, get the 14", but for the rest of us who's usecase is mostly work/home, please don't change.
the comments that the 16 inch is to heavy , Ive been lugging a 17 inch 6 pound intel windows machine for years . 16 inch M1 pro lightened the load , wanted to stay away from the 14 inch because I despise fan noise
You've been doing it for years. You have to understand that most of us are used to carrying macbook airs or 13" pros (and using a desktop as a main workstation). It's much much more different from the 16". Your experience is different from ours
Tell me if the 16 fan noise is little compared to 14 inch. Am still rocking my 15 inch 2014 and still deciding the two or maybe the upcoming M2.

Got the 14 inch because if I want a big screen I can plug in my monitor at home. When I need to move around I have a small, powerful and quiet laptop.
Got the 14 inch specced out, such a beast in such a tiny package, all my friends went with the 16inch and seem to regret it based on its size. For people wondering definitely go see it in person its much larger then videos make it seem

I bought the 16" and don't regret it at all. Love the bigger screen. I don't travel much, only occasionally but it's not a burden.

Love my “16. Honestly it’s just more comfy to type on since I’m a larger guy.
I work in spreadsheets all day and the 16” has been a game changer. Whenever I work on a smaller display I feel claustrophobic now
what do you use to navigate spreadsheets seeing as excel for office doesn't allow us to use the keyboard to access the ribbon?

I cycle to work with a 16” 2020 model on my back and I can’t say it is a big issue. On the upside I never seek out an external monitor if it’s not already in front of me, which was the case with a 13” model back in the day. I use it for coding and occasionally for audio production.
Nice video! It def helps to make a more informed decision especially when it comes to its portability.
In the days of 13" v 15", I liked the screen on the 15, but found the chassis to be pretty hefty (but, hey, remember when Apple made the 17" MacBook Pro?). The 13" screen was a tad small. I always wanted a 14" screen in the 13" chassis. And here we are!
there's also the m2 macbook air which is about 13.6 inches and the same size/smaller than older 13in macbook airs.
I love the extra screen. I work remotely most of the time. Been on the 13inch m1 MacBook pro for 2 years and in the following months want to upgrade to the 16inch model. I used my iPad as a second monitor for my MacBook (it helps a lot when you are coding or editing videos). So yea I am hyped about it, just need to save a few more $$$ till I get it.
@kyle Erickson do you think there will be a new second-generation 16-inch model this year?
People generally underestimate the impact of the 16.2” screen on their workflow claiming that all you need is a 13.3” MBA. They have no idea what really matters to users

I love my 16 inch, the 14 is just tooo tiny for me.
I carried the 17” MacBook Pro for years… this will be a big improvement !! I just love the screen area !!
I got the 16" after spending a year and a half with the 13" Air, and for my uses, getting the 14" felt like buying the same laptop twice. So glad I went with the 16", the screen size is perfect and a great complement to my Air
LoL my cousin and I did and said the same thing. 14” is uncomfortable because of how much you have to bend your wrists. The m1 air is so thin you don’t bend your wrists that much. 16” is so big we can rest our wrists on the actual monitor itself. 14” is way too small.

I got the m1 max 16" and I don't regret my choice, regarding the weight it's minor coming from a dell gaming laptop with 1/5 of the power, and for my use as a software developer the battery life is amazing
Thanks for your vid. I bought both 16 & 14 … deciding to go with 14. At first a little weird as I was used to old 15”… so 14 felt a bit small at first. But getting used to it now. Your vid helped me feel better about picking the 14. Keep it up. & I’ll be watching and supporting ad I would like to do my own vids too (diff topic).. and seeing you start up and being at 3k right now is a motivator… as I feel I can do it too😊

I write code for like 12 hours a day with my 13" MBP and it's never had an issue and I've never heard the fans - love it. But I also keep the lid closed when I'm at my desk and like to work on the couch at random points throughout the day so I prefer the smaller form factor.
MBP 16" M1 Max here, in 4 months time of use yesterday was the first time ever I heard the fans really working (I installed World of Warcraft and tested the 1-20 lvl world). Fans were working but there was no heat coming out. Another thing I'd like to add here is that the sound quality is really good compared to the previous Dolbi Atos certified Windows laptop I had. It was 14" power beast as well but had to change its' fans because of the constant heating they started to rattle. The MBP 16 is perfectly quiet and the only thing to consider might be picking 24 GPU cores over the 32 GPU cores , adding more or equal to 32 GB of memory and no less than 1 TB of storage, 2 TB preferably.
Thanks for the great video! I've been tossing up between the MacBook Air and the Pro, and after thinking about my particular use case I think I'm going to go with... sticking with my 2013 13" MacBook Pro.
The Air is a little thinner, a little lighter, the battery life is much better, and obviously my old machine can't compete on a technical level, but for what I'm using it for (MS Office 365 apps and Chrome, mostly) I can live with these shortcomings, at least for now.

I really liked your video. It was well done. I'm a bit late to the party but I have bought a 16" M1 Max. I am still awaiting it but I'm really excited to try it out. I will be switching from Windows to Mac. Never owned a Mac before nor have really used MacOs so I will be diving in the deep end.

I’ve got a 28” 4K monitor, keyboard, and mouse, so I’m also considering an M1 Mac Mini since the portability of a laptop is not a huge necessity for my creative work. I noticed you haven’t made or uploaded a review of the Mac mini. I’d be greatly interested in seeing one soon if that’s something you feel there is a demand for or worth making. I’m also waiting for the M2 Mac Mini (if it will happen). Cheers!

I’ve got a 14” M1 Max as my personal laptop and a 16” M1 Max as my work laptop. I definitely like the smaller size for portability, but the 16” screen is so much better for doing work on. That said, I have a Studio Display on my home desk and I’m only using the laptop display as an auxiliary display with most things happening on the bigger display. So a 14” might’ve been the better choice. That said, if I had a chance to pick again, I still might end up with a 16” for the bigger battery, better thermals and that extra real estate when using it strictly as a laptop. I just wouldn’t expect to use it on a plane.
I just running the M1 Air and not regret it, but I am not a Video Editor, just a Webdev and for Webdev this is more then enough, even on huge projects.

Man I hear you!!! i am in the exact same boat. I love USING my 16". The large screen is great. But I HATE CARRYING it around. if i could do it again. i definitely would go with the 14" or 13". Still hoping Apple will upgrade the 12.9 iPad pro and actually make it a pro iPad. Pro apps and external display port will definitely sell me on it

I got the 14 inch M1max 32 gigs RAM, 2TB SSD. I love it. I ordered the 16" online on the day it was announced but cancelled the order a week later after I remembered the nightmare of lugging a17" laptop around NYC years ago. But first I went to the Apple store and looked at them side by side. I knew on the spot that the 14" was the right decision for me. The sound is awesome on the 14" even though it's not a good as the 16". It's still amazes me. I'm not crazy about the Webcam but when I'm at my desk I doc it to an external monitor or two and a better web cam. I've had no issues with heat or fan noise. I love the size, the weight, the build quality. When my back hurts from a long day at my desk I take this thing to bed and continue working comfortably. I'll be doing some flying soon and this will be much better on the plane than the 16". It's just so much more versatile.
I think the 16” is a better option for traveling

My first laptop was a 15" monster from Gateway, easily outweighing the 16" M1 by 3-5 lbs. I'm glad I traded in my 2019 16" MacBook Pro for this for many reasons, but if I hadn't had one to trade in, I wouldn't have bought it.
The speakers and screen are worth any weight for the 16". I've travelled all over with it and it's fine in my backpack.
I was worried about the size and weight but man this screen and the speakers and the overall build and look... absolutely worth the little bit of extra weight.
I returned my 16" MacBook pro after a month of usage for the 14" model. I'm so glad I did. Same specifications but the compact size of 14" makes it so versatile for traveling. After switching to the 14", I would bring the laptop with me wherever I go. The 20,000mah Anker portable battery gave my 14" an extra 7hrs of battery life. I highly recommend the 14" MacBook pro! 🍻

Yeah love my 14" after coming from the old 16". 16" is fantastic once all setup on a desk but it's just a little too big and obnoxious if you take it out. It feels much more vulnerable for some reason... more likely to get knocked about.
Both great machine though obviously. I'd be happy with either. I think the sweet spot for me would be a 15" Macbook Air with as thin bezels as possible.

@@mynameistrd6841 I complained about the size of the laptop, not the weight. I assume you didn't read my comment. Using the 16" MacBook Pro on a small coffee table, the plane, or in the car is a pain in the ass because of its dimensions.
The 16" is perfect for remote work and when I need to photo edit. 99% of the time it's in a docking station. I really don't plan on replacing this machine for at least five years.
Just stumbled upon this channel & am so glad I did. Currently considering upgrading my 2012 MB pro to a late 2019 16" 1 tb/32gb. Two main things I do, both using Affinity: edit photos & graphic design. Just curious as to what you think & perhaps reliable source for used Macbook pro. Thanks in advance!
i got the 16" for the better speakers and screen size I don't think either one is better than the other they just appeal to people with different needs and wants in a laptop

Thanks for sharing your thoughts. I'm actually owning 2020 MacBook 13" Pro M1 and my new MacBook 16 Pro M1 arrived today. Great machine, great quality and indeed it's a bigger brick. Anyway, my first impression when typing is that actually the sharp edges of the bottom of the body are hurting my hands. Typing is not really comfortable. How they didn't think about making those edge less sharp... What are your impressions?

Lol went from 14 to 16. Just figured why not. I really like this new M1 fan hasn’t even come on. For all I know it’s broken. I got the pro. I do music I don’t need anymore.
Def 14“ is the size to go of you want to be mobile. The 14“ is already quite heavy compared to previous 13“ models. I didn’t understood all the yt who recommended the 16“ in the first place. Also, no heat problem on my end 🤷♀️

that's why light mac air 16 inch version would be a good alternative for a lot of people. I like the 15, but after seeing the chunky 16, it's much heavier and less portable so opted for a 14. Even if they're sold the same price, I'd still choose 14 because of how it changes to your daily life. it has the same chip with the 16 so there's not much reason. For 200 extra, get a monitor for at home use, and then carry your portable 14 while you're away. It's a great combo workflow
better battery, bigger screen, bestter coolling, better speaker and all that good stuff for just 200 dollars extra. I am a pretty tall guy, so the 16 inch is way better for me, and the weight is negligible tbh

I'm traveling/moving a lot, as a life style. And I intend to buy the 16inch _because_ of that. I live and work in different places for several months all the time. Not long enough to buy and external monitor though. So I want a big enough screen to be comfortable working on it all day. The size and weight are only marginally larger than the 16 inch surface book 2 that has been just fine in my last 3 years of travel life. Thoughts anyone?

@@markg1531 Well these stores usually have two configurations: the base model; and the 10 core, 1 TB version. At least, where I live, if I want the fancier variants, I have to order through apple. Then, the wait is like 2 months.

How often do you replace your machines? My MBP is 10yo this year and my next MBP will have to last another 10 yrs. That’s why I’ll probably buy a Max with high RAM so that it’ll last and not run out of memory for apps like Photoshop. Does that make sense in your opinion?
Totally makes sense! I change machines quite often, I can’t help myself! Haha
I upgrade every 5-6 years. I usually pick the midline version, I don’t work as a professional photographer or videographer, and I’d be lying to myself if I said I’d use the super high end to its fullest potential. The extra $1k+ just isn’t worth it.
Now if it’s FREE that is another story! haha.
Depends on workflow. I have an iPad mini for "take everywhere", entry level M1 MacBook Air for when I need to do light work, and 16 inch M1 MacBook Pro Max for heavy work. That said, if I could only buy one, I'd buy the 16 inch because most of my work requires multiple windows open and 13/14 inch screens are too small for me when getting things done. Performance wise, the Max is great but unlike Kyle, my timeline DOES sometimes slowdown. I wish it were MORE powerful.
What are you using for a video editor?

I have the 16” pro and I love it. To me, it is not that big or clunky compared to a lot of Windows laptops that have this kind of power. Need the screen real estate. For travel, an m1 air is your best bet.
My cousin got the 16” but I told him when I do get one it would be the 14” for the portability since I still need it for uni. Rather put the $200 towards getting 32gb ram but now I’m debating getting the mid or maxed out pro chip
Really, I tried a 13inch which is not the 14 inch but the size of screen was pretty detrimental to me, I like having more space for more things.

Not really! It gets a little warm on the bottom at times, but nothing like the old Intel macs. But I haven’t consistently been pushing it to it’s limits or anything.
I use my 16” for a lot of transcoding x264 to x265 and although all 10 cores go up to 90% for up to an hour I’ve never heard the fan. It does this a lot better than the M1 MB Air it replaced.
I’m a interface designer and owned a 13 MacBook Air. Sometimes I work remotely out off the office and, unless I have an extra monitor, the screen size is a pain for me. I’m considering switching to a MacBook Pro 16. I need the extra pixels.. badly!
I bought the M1 Pro 16” with 32GB Ram and as a software developer, CPU is more utilized than GPU. M1 Max would have been way overkill for what I needed. Though, I still did get the full fat M1 Pro instead of the bin version with less GPU cores. Still wanted the better graphics in case I do get into any kind of GPU heavy tasks.
I have a hulking maxed-out Alienware A51 R2 that runs my full Adobe CC suite and Cinema 4D. For years, I have been constantly globe-trotting for work (this will no doubt resume soon), toting a work laptop that goes in overhead storage, so I have kept a personal tech bag that goes under the seat in front. The 11” M1 iPad Pro fits the bill. It sits in a slender but very stiff carrying case that is about twice the thickness of the iPad + Magic Keyboard, but I also have a Magic Mouse 2, AirPods Pro, a couple of power banks, a slim external SSD, a couple of dongles and a couple of leads. The bag still zips shut without effort.

I'd never want to take my main machine out of the house tbh, iPad Pro does the job although those new iPad Mini's lookin tasty..
I use a M1 iPad Pro with a magic keyboard case. Then again work for me is on the computer but not so intense that an ipad like this will be plenty good. I just use it for notes and dates appointments things like that. Surfing the web sending invoices, emails simple stuff. This works great and its nice because it goes back to being a fun to use iPad anytime I want.
I travel at least 3 days a week with a 16 inch M1 Pro. I consider it very late. Often times I have to double check my bag to make sure I didn’t forget to put it in there, because it feels so late. I’m not sure why people feel like it’s heavy. I had a 16 inch Intel before this, 15 inch before that, and still have my 17 inch personal MacBook Pro, so I don’t really use it that much anymore due to age. The 15 and 17 feel heavier, for sure.
Magsafe saves a port, and most of all wear and tear on your tb4 usbc ports.
You don't have to use it but you should for those two reasons alone.
And it may actually save your laptop from fall damage, which is the main reason it exists.
I was offered a second hand 14 and 16 inch m1 macbook pro 16 gb memory and 1 TB SSD for 1500$ and 1600$ and they look both like new really, no scratch at all ! I couldnt decide which one to keep and as they are both at such good price and state i kept them both … 😅 What do you think ? A bit crazy ? The 14 inch is more portable and i love the screen of the 16 inch !
I just went from a mid-2012 unibody to the MPB M2 16. Could never go with a smaller screen. The 16 is the exact same footprint as the 2012 just with the large bezels deleted. The 16 is for around the house and I have an M1 Air for travel. No reason to limit yourself to one laptop lol
I have chosen 16 inch model for music production with great battery life and great speakers. Most of the time (in home environment ) you can use it without need of using headphones. It's speakers feels you that, you are listening studio monitors.Also I use 16 inch along with my old 12 inch MacBook.
I wish I can afford it and I have a 2015 MacBook Pro and I have Logic Pro 10.7, but I got to accept on what I have. This is a good laptop

I finally decided on the 16 as well. If I was carrying it as a commuter, or student, over my shoulder I’d maybe go 14. I will be on my ebike, carrying it a short distance. If it’s horrible I will trade it in.
Do you have eyestrain using this mac? I have been using it for almost a year and get red eyes everytime I use it for 30 minutes.

First off : i am a mac book pro 15 inch mid 2014 owner and an Iphone XR owner and i love them ! BUT :
Apple needs to be taught a lesson and that lesson needs to be taught soon !!!
People need to stop buying demonic Apple products for 1 year or maybe 2. Straight , no macs , iphones , heck , no adapters nothing!!!!

i love using logic pro BUT!!! they soldered the SSD onto the motherboard ever since 2016. I recently went to an apple certified repair shop and asked them : what if i get a m1pro macbook pro and as soon as the warranty expires , the ssd fails me . How do u go about repairing it ? They said it ll cost me a hefty sum cause they replace the whole board . I was like WhAT ? Like dayum , replace 5-6-7 parts just cause one don’t work , there ain’t nuthin logical about that . Another point is : on windows : 1tb ssd --> roughly 110$/€ . 2 tb --> roughly 2x 110 $/€ . @demonic-apple --> 2tb costs 800$ …?!?! What ? And you can t even replace it . I have a dream : :” that for 1 year straight up nobody buys any apple products , not even an adapter . Let s see those execs shit their pants and start asking questions like : oh my … what are we doing wrong ? To me they seem like money hungry apes that can not quench their thirst for money . It walks along the lines of unethical . There s isn’t even any real advantage to having the ssd soldered. I ve heard people say that it s faster . No it s not . We have the internet . Anybody can check the numbers and the speeds of different ssd s out there. Oh and just to put the cherry on top : iphone 13 : amazing processor and hardware but it s rocking the lightning port 🤣 usb 2.0 speeds . Apple 🍎 i really hope u get yours and the EU puts you in place with regulations on ports and on right to repair . They got hundreds of billions offshore like liquidities …. This got outta pocket a long time ago … out of their consumers pockets to be exact. They answer to no one and lack moral discernment . Take care y’all 😃🙏🏻🤗. But the processors are amazing and I respect the integration of the cpu and gpu and RAM 🐏 . Cause that actually wields a big boost in performance. I bought the 14” M1 pro… I’m returning it. I’m coming from a 15” late 2013 MacBook Pro… will get the 16” m1 pro - it’s approx the same dimensions as the 15” MBP, slightly lighter and has more screen real estate due to very small bezels
The 16" as a home computer. 13/14 inches for travel.
I love lugging the size around. Take it everywhere.
It's funny that you mention getting the 16" because you thought you'd be at home and the weight wouldn't matter.
If i'm at home most of the time, i'd probably get the 14" since i'd just end up using an external monitor if one is avaibale. Whereas i'd want the larger size screen if I don't have the option of an external monitor.

BIG TIPP: Get at least 32GB of RAM if you intend to use this laptop for photo / video editing purposes. I have people in my photo class complaining all the time about their 16GB not cutting it and they are disappointed with their brand new "super machine", I have the M1 Pro with the 32GB and haven't seen a beachball or stutter while drawing masks in PS projects with multiple layers & 100mp images or cutting videos in Premiere (at the same time) ever since. :)

get curtins problem solved , as for the 14 to 16 2 inches is a huge thing for sure but then again you have to ask your self is the cost fo the 16 worth it or is the 14 better for price, both have the same display other then size. the notch is anoying for sure on any of them period, what i hate the most of the 16 which keeps me from it is the trackpad is way to big on it where the 14 is more reasonable tho still a bit big but at least you can type properly on the 14 with out hitting the track pad as often.. i ended up for now with my mac mini m1 maxed out the ram and a 512 ssd and i bought the base model air laptop more to prove to people why you dont buy and 8x256 config in any mac but it is usuable for me for doing email and the very min of other things with 8x256 that config in any mac is not going to last long expecially in the M1 you have to make sure to avoind swap aka virtual memory at all cost the more you go into it the faster that SSD is going to toast on you SSD drive tech is not yet good enough to handel with alot of sawp use so be carefulll with swap on any mac not just the base config systems of the lower end configs

I had the 16", returned it and got the 14". For an extra 2" of screen size, the weight is insane. I travel for work alot so weight matters. Now I just use my 14" + a 4k oled 16" display that weighs about 1.5lbs.
So you're actually carrying around 5lbs(14" MBP + 16" screen) as opposed to 4.3lbs 16" MBP. PS.: With the 16" MBP you're also carrying around extra battery not just screen. MacBook Pro 14 ″ battery: 69,6 Wh vs. MacBook Pro 16 ″ battery: 99,6 Wh. Also, better cooling.
@@coIorpanda I don't carry the second monitor around all the time, only when I work on-site at a region for many days. Even if I do, I have a locker to leave it. Don't need the extra cooling with M1 Pro, battery life is more than sufficient. Nice try to justify usage without knowing what I use it for.
@@tirosc If it fits your needs, great. Then the 16" wasn't for you in the first place. And complaining about 0,8lb difference? I will agree with you that it's harder to manage it but due to physical size, not weight. Anyway, I hope it covers all your needs and it helps you do great work. Cheers!
@@tirosc you need to spend close to the cost of the MacBook Pro to get a similar quality display. I would rather have the best 16 inch display built in (always with me) than to hook up a 14 inch to an inferior monitor. (Unless you’re shelling out a few thousand for a display that gets toted around- doubtful)

I have 16 M1 Max, 64 ram and 1tb ssd. I’m pro photographer and use it strictly for photography. But I have problems with it. When I open Psb files, it takes between 2 and 3 minutes for them to open in Ps. Psd files generally are also not snappy, it takes between 10 and 20 seconds for them to open.
In addition to that, when I’m in the process of saving the open file, and then in the same time go to create a smart object, a dialog box pops up with the forward moving progress bar, it takes about 4-5 minutes each time for this to finish. Can’t to anything but wait.
I tried resetting and redownloading photoshop. But didn’t help.
Try traveling with a gaming windows laptop once 😂

with the M1 we can not use VMs anymore, at least not with Virtual Box, when that changes I ll be interested.

You've never owned Dell Precision series laptops I take it? I have a Precision m4800 that I still use a 7530 and Latitude 5491, a neat little 6 core, 12 thread beast. But none of these are as light as your mac pro. Sure ok the 5491 is a bit smaller as it's only a 14 inch laptop but it's also thicker and the m4800 is only about a half poound lighter then the m6800 I once owned and that was a back breaker. A royal PIA as a portable. But so is the m4800. It's beautiful tri-metal fit and finish makes up for the absolute girth, and the 7530 is absolutely powerful and crazy in every way imaginable. But it too isn't the most ideal portable. Like the m4800 you can take it but your also going to need a power adapter once you do anything substantial and that's where the Latitude 5491 comes in to play. It's 100 linux compatible too. But if I am just going to do lighter work, I'll opt to take that one over my other two beasts deoending on my clients needs. Notice I mentioned I still have an m4800 and that's because many of my clients still use old VGA style adapters and usb docks. Somewhat old school and thus the need for ports and lots of processing power. But none of these are very nice on the old back..
i have ipad pro 12`9" , there is no sense to me to get 14" instead 16 ^^
Why not purchase a smaller model and connect it to a video monitor. I do that with my Dell Laptop. I connect to a 32” monitor.
