I sincerely hope that when he's fought this fight to its conclusion, he would consider going into politics and supporting wholesale systemic change. By forming a new political party with other morally responsible, empathetic free thinkers; a party that focuses on doing right by the majority of working people in this country. Not just the super rich.

The media are largely to blame for our situation. They should report with plurality and challenge government misinformation. Workers produce the goods, build the houses, build the roads, transport the goods, heal the sick, repair what's broken, provide the services, work out the balance sheets, fight the wars, manage, clean and protect society. We provide the dual roles in the economy of worker/taxpayer, producer and consumer, service provider and service user. We are collateral, cannon fodder and consumers. Why do we live in poverty while the rich siphon our taxes and provide little use to society?

Why? because people haven't been thinking the right way, and have coperated with many dynamics going this way for a long time, coperation can be another form of permission.

The reason Mick is so well informed and eloquent is because he has spent his life working actual jobs and in the process learned how to argue. Politicians typically don't have real lives before entering the world of politics and thus never learn how to argue, they get taught how to lie.

I think the effect is as you describe, but the causes are different. A lot of politicians have actual jobs before they enter politics, but once they sign up to represent a party they are subject to multiple conflicting loyalties and constraints. For most of them that results in them developing the ability to hold conflicting view on things and to lose sight of what they themselves believe (or once believed) and the overall result of that is - as you suggest - that they are often conflicted and can't make decisions or that they are forced to implement party policies that they disagree with and therefore are very half-hearted about things. The political life can have three outcomes. One, they get heavily into it and realise what a no-win thing it is at a personal level and they get out. Two, they decide that having their snouts in the trough is worth swallowing any integrity they had and live with the self-loathing that must bring or three, they find a way to be a tolerated sniper inside, but slightly outside the system (Tony Benn and Ken Clarke are notable examples).

@@Neil070 True enough - in modern times a lot of them go straight from college or University and into politics, but those who have had jobs do tend to be as you describe. The only two I can remember being the exception (though there will be others) were Dennis Skinner who had been a miner and Alan Johnson who had worked as a postman (I remembered the latter cos that's exactly the job I drifted into when I left secondary school!).

Not just that; his body language is attentive and respectful, and his manner is open and shows appropriate levels of humour, even with reporters trying to trip him up.
I can't get my head around the fact that, even after Mick has explained the reasons for the strike in layman's terms, the press continue to ask the same questions as each other and continue to look at the strikes rather than the reasons for their necessity. What is the hold up, for God's sake? Mick et al have explained that pay/ working conditions/ safety are not even up to "adequate" levels. The Government and the train companies just need to thank him for pointing it out, rectify the situation and we all get on with our day. If they are not doing this, is it obviously because they put profit before safety and wellbeing. Why aren't the papers vilifying the government and rail companies over this? Oh that's right, vested interests and greed. But it looks like a growing portion of the general public are seeing through the BS at last. Keep it up, Mick!

The fact MIck never tries to dodge the question or leave early speaks volumes about the credibility of his responses. More power to all the striking unions merely trying to get pay settlements and working rights they deserve.
The only people arguing against democratic workers unions mobilising are Tories. Anyone who says otherwise are obviously lying because how can you argue with a democratic system more fair than our general elections.
I've worked on the railway since 1999 and I've never seen a worse government response to a simple pay negotiation I'd happily have a 6% pay rise I was an essential worker all through Covid risking my life doing my job as most of the UK looked like 28 days later, I wore the masks and I accepted in 2020 no pay rise but to be told last year and this year to have not paid me for all my service feels like a total betrayal from this government that gave themselves pay rises and even the Current Prime minister was having illegal parties whilst I was having to miss my family over a lockdown Christmas.
Try working in a private sector company that don't give a fuck. Striking will do worse than nothing there.

Staff know the internal message being sent by Network Rail and what Mick Lynch is saying is miles apart and that the government and Network Rail are the real crooks in this! Network Rail continue to p**s money down the drain on poor mid to senior level managers.. sick leave open to people joining from from first day.. vehicle fleet paying ridiculous amounts in fines.. courses for courses and paying 3rd party training.. HS2.. the list is endless… why does Network Rail have soo soo many senior execs on ridiculous salaries and benefits.. why is it the lower end salary are affected.. then people want to give Qatar a lecture on migrant workers? NHS/Education/Transport/Emergency services/ civil service all under paid!

I think it's fair to say that one of the big reasons that public opinion has shifted in favour of supporting strikers, is due to Mick and his clear and simple communication. And I don't mean "simple" in a negative way, but communicating and explaining things in a way which the Common Man (and Woman) can udnerstand. There's no jargon, he stays on topic, and actually answers questions without diverting the interview to a slightly different scripted topic (which alot of politicans do - you'll notice that the vast majority of politicans do this - change the topic and resort to whataboutery, whilst avoiding the question).
The other reason is obviously the cost of living emergency, but Mick has played a big part in this shift as well.

This guy is an incredible spokesperson. I'm massively inconvenienced by the rail strikes in December, yet here I am nodding as he speaks because he is making complete sense. I think the RMT in particular can support Brexit lol. The EU's push for free-market rail is absurd. Even the UK's crappy privatization involves subsidizing costly franchises with revenue from profitable ones. If an 'open access' operator can run trains anywhere, they can compete on the profitable ones and keep the change, further underfunding construction and services elsewhere.
The Conservatives of course have been allowing more open-access operators anyway, but the EU would've required us to. Individual workers are probably still worse off for Brexit, but the rail industry as a whole can be better.

Twenty years served as a Guard, I wish that we had a Mick Lynch back in my day. Before privatisation we were fired in 1993. At that time my take home pay was £104 a week and my mortgage was £200 a month. We worked 56 different shifts and had to compete for overtime just to survive. I learned my lesson and I think everybody should do what I did in 2007 when I stopped working altogether because it was financially impossible to continue.

@@DrMontague I lived through the time when Heath was pushing to enter the common market. We knew that we shouldn't be joining but Heath was a greedy B'stard and wanted another yacht. There was a referendum to withdraw from the market back in the seventies and everybody voted to leave then, but they covered up the result.. When our currency lost its value by a hundred and forty pence to the pound, people faced the reality of this folly as they went into absolute poverty and couldn't pay their way anymore.

Very impressive articulacy and calm, thoughtful response to questions. When have you ever seen an MP/Cabinet minister give an actual answer to a question, instead we get side-stepping, disrespectful deviation. Mick is a breath of fresh air and the public must support people like him who are holding businesses and the Government to account. If it wasnt for people like him we would all be on zero hours contracts.

I'll fully admit that given I don't use the rail for transport (I live up north, not possible to get to my place of work by public transport), so it didn't always clock to high on my radar. I was aware that the previous strikes were happening, and that lots of people down south were having difficulty getting to work etc, but hadn't looked into it much further than that.
I'm trying to become more engaged with politics etc recently though, hence why I ended up here.
People like Mick change and save peoples lives.

@br5380 I’m a rep for the RMT and we all operate and conduct ourselves in the same way. The days of table banging and demanding are in the past. We all do research before our meetings and construct responses for anything put to us. We have a wonderful education centre that strives to train and educate us better than the people we are negotiating with.
