In this lesson, I show a practice tip on how you can transition between the chords of E, A, and B7 -- specifically by playing bass notes that walk up and down between these chords. This is a very common technique you'll find in lots of country music, especially from artists like Johnny Cash (e.g., Walk the Line) and Willie Nelson (e.g., Angel Flying Too Close to the Ground). I'll show you the basics of how to play the chords used (E, A, and B7 -- including tabs) and then break down the fundamentals of this technique.

I am a 76 year old beginner and I have been taking lessons for a year now. I have learned more about walk ups and downs here than with my teacher.. Thank you.
Eek ! I thought it was just me . . . (76)
And I thought I had problems at 75!
Keep it going Im a beginner in my 50's
This is what “beginner” lessons are supposed to be like. Take it slow and don’t throw too much at us at once. Many thanks! 👍👍
I've been trying to find someone to teach these walk ups and downs between chords. I didn't even know that's what they were called. I just got lucky when I blindly stumbled upon your channel 2 years ago. It's funny because I had just started teaching myself. I was 59 years old and thought "I'll never get this!" But for some reason today I wanted to try those walk ups again and remembered your channel. Now I watch you play them and wonder what in the hell did I think was so hard about that? I'm gonna call that progression! Thank you, David. You've helped me with many other things also over these past two years. At this age, just finding something new that I like doing is a miracle in itself. Keep on teaching. People like me need you. Thank you, again.
Same!!!!!
I hated the B7 to begin with but really wanted to play Folsom Prison Blues. Kept plucking away at the song and the B7 magically became clear. I learned to NOT avoid it or I would never be able to play it. (I know i know DUH.) Great lesson for walking chords.
Thank you so much David , 6 months on chords, scales, key of this key of that,CAGED system, etc. Your help is what I needed with the learning steps to play songs which I hear all the time from guitar learners. I am learning on my own, tried some memberships here and there/ Your amazing teaching system is exactly what I needed. I just joined your Patreon for now while I continue to grow calluses on my fingers. Thank you!!
Thank you. 16 months in and have always worked chord changes, rather than walking between them. Makes sense and fun. Good lesson.
I just learned Merle Haggard's "Today I Started Loving You Again," an absolutely killer song that uses these same three chords. Can't wait to see if I can put some of this to work. The song itself is so easy to play, it definitely needs some embellishment. Thanks!
Love how simply you explain the different techniques with the fret board, learnt loads from watching your vids, thank you from a struggling 66 year old beginner 🌹
I just found your video series and love them! You provide easy to understand guitar fundamentals. From your strength training for barre chords to the walking baselines you offer training that I have not found anywhere else on the 'tube. Wile I am at it should mention that I really enjoy your tabs. You give a great high level of the lesson and I like how you show the tab overhead while describing it. Also like the fact that you put where index where different sections can be found in the video description making it easy to find certain sections. Great job!!!
Excellent, David. There's hope for a 68 year old lefty!
Great lesson and I Love that you count everything out loud so that we can do it in time ! Thanks and Rock on 👍😎🎸
I have to say i like your video, the fact you take you time to illustrate and simplify the steps then repeat them, it makes the learning process much more easier.
Agreed with the venerable Mr. Mello, I am only 53, been playing for about 9 months. I also just learned a lot from you on the Walk up and Down. I have it down, now I just have to perfect it and integrate it into Mr. Cash's "Walk The Line." Kickin' the ol' bucket list!
Thank you David for your awesome lessons on RUclips. Your Guitar sounds so clean. Every note is so clear. Thanks a bunch for such good valuable content on RUclips.
Hi David, it does take time to get it right, just had to remember we didn't just start running from the off, babies have to crawl, and baby steps, same with learning something new, guitar etc, can't just pick up guitar and play it properly first time... Following you gives great encouragement, play along, at least we can hear, see how it goes and sounds, eventually... Love Cash /Nelson etc. Thanks Richard
Thanks for the way you explain the use of the fingers movement, you are a great teacher, keep it up.
I'm so happy to have found you. I just stumbled on walk down's and walk up's.. in this covid-19 hole we're living in - bought a used guitar and piano, and pretty much all I do :). The B7 is intimidating - but you made it obtainable. I'm still in the frustration level, but will practice this like crazy. So helpful!
Thank you so very much! I play a lot of song with those chords and could never understand the walk down/ walk ups! I’ve been in limbo from beginner to intermediate! This will help make that leap. Great lesson !! Thank you!!!! From NB Canada!!!
Thank you, lesson was easy to follow, understandable...you did it slowly so we could play along. Love it. Thank you thank you thank you

You explained very well, not only I heard you getting that country vibe I actually could hear that myself while playing. thanks
just a note, B7 is also on Sticky shoes. for those who know the song ;) the ups and downs are there as well and the connection of b7 and E
David, I’m really learning my walk ups, and making ground against the mighty B7 chord! many thanks from north east England👍
You explain and demonstrate it so easy,I'm the one making it difficult......Dooooh! Now, I get it. Keep up the good work.
Glad I found your channel!

Thanks David, very helpful
Ideal RUclips teacher !
You made my day, really, today. I was browsing your site after work, and came across your lesson War is Over (merry xmas) from John Lennon. That song means a great deal to me as it was a standard for a musician friend of mine from many years ago. He died early in his life, and I always meant to get the words N chords to that one and play it. Now, I will. Cheers. Email me if you have time, I subscribed to ur list, if you are still doing this stuff...I'd love to speak with you. CM

I'm just beginner, but yesterday I found out that my new song need B7 chords and today I found this useful lesson. thnx
+jan tibis nice, glad to know! Anytime a song needs a B chord you can usually substitute in a B7, especially if the song is in the key of E (using E and A and B).
Good job!
Thank you so much
Thank you!
Very good, thanks

Man I ask for a lesson on Uriah Heep, the Wizard please. I have read it has a different tuning, but I am not positive. I appreciate your lessons you do s great job!! Thank you.
very helpful
This basically enough to play Willie Nelson’s famous Blue Eyes Crying In the Rain
Excellent video. Do you have one for Desperado?
on the strum portion of the walk up, do you strum the bass note or skip it?
If the B7 normally resolves at E...what's the walkdown from B7 to E ??
I have a D28 Martin. But love the sound of your guitar. What model of Taylor is that? Love that sound.
Great video! You deserve more subs & please upload more often. :)
+Hussain Rangadi thanks!! Appreciate it. I wish I could upload more -- trying to find ways to get into a good groove that works with my other job / family / life responsibilities. For 2017 my goal is a video each week, without fail. Thanks again!
McCartney uses walk ups a lot ,cool technique
Thank U,,,thank U very much,,,
Great lesson - maybe need to include walk up and down between E and B7? Think Willie Nelson "Blue Eyes Crying In The Rain" which contains these chords but moves in different order.
Good feedback, thanks! Without fail I probably listen to redheaded stranger during dinner once a week. Every week. And I’ve definitely been meaning to make a lesson for that song.
Is the way you're doing it a 12 bar blues?
David can you help me with some Elvis oldies? John Rainey has several covers on you tube. Could you please do a tutorial on Hound Dog and one night?
please provide the tabs or songs chords in PDF in the description.
Hi David, great tutorial! Are you going to make a tutorial lesson someday about Willie Nelson Angel Flying Too Close To The Ground?
+Simone Felli yes indeed :) it is in my practice rotation right now. Probably coming in the next few weeks.
BRILLIANT
+Go For God thanks!
Kindly make some vdo for walking through G D C chords please....You are awesome. Regrds from India
+Krishnendu Datta thanks I will def do that!
These three chords make up “Till I can gain control again” Blue Rodeo or Emmylou Harris.
Great lesson, what is the model of your Taylor, please?
+Lorrae Wright 310
on the B7 is there a walk straight to the E like in Folsom Prison Blues? not the intro riff but something more simpler perhaps?
In the key of Emaj, the chord scale is E, F#-, G#-, A, B, C#-, D#o where “-“ is minor. In the example, he is simply walking up the chord scale from E to A. The walk from A to B7 uses A# which is a tension note. To walk from B to E, play B, C#, D#, E
u bad ASSSS!!! dude.....
Blues also does this.
Big city by merle Haggard
ll Jay Ho guru sarkar aapka Jay mahakal sarve mangal mangaliye ll dhanyavad sir
Cool. But don't you want to go from B 7 to E to bring it home in the key of E??
Thump up
Hey , make a video of how to play audition , from la la land pleeaaaseeee
+Maxii Lavaque yes yes it is coming :) stay tuned.
Songnotes yassssss, thanks 🤙
I have hated the B7 chord and still can't get by it. I know it is a must or it wouldn't be there. But great lesson
B7 cord is better played on a seven string guitar I have a schecter demon-7 seven string guitar and it's standard tuning is B.E.A.D.G.b.e
W
Creeker by Tyler Childers would be a good song for this.
Their easy trust me.
