PURE Street Photography With the Lumix S9 (Black & White POV in Edinburgh)

  • In this week's POV photography video I take the Panasonic Lumix S9 for a street photography walk around the beautiful Scottish city of Edinburgh. I give a first person view on what catches my eye in street images, how I wait for the right moment and how I try and shoot quickly to avoid being seen.
    I shoot using the Leica Monochrome black and white profile, with extra contrast and the images you see are all JPEGs as Lightroom doesn't support raw files from the S9 at the time of recording this video.
    I used only a 50mm f/1.8mm Panasonic lens, shooting in aperture priority mode and face detect autofocus.
    The thing screwed into the camera isn't a gimbal or stabiliser, it's just a mount to allow me to record these POV videos.

    After that week of the selected influencers going to Japan to test / review this camera, there was a LOT of people hating, complaining, crying, and whining about this camera being this, or that, or for newbs, or for tiktokers, etc... I just wanna say, Lumix is SERIOUSLY onto something, especially with the picture profiles and the real time luts. More importantly, the Lumix Lab app is going to be one of the MAIN reasons that I believe the S9 does successful numbers. What you did here in his video, was great. Awesome images, along with proving a point !

      Maybe those people just wanted more than only walk through streets and take pictures of anyone sitting on a bench 😉
      No pictures are nice, and I am sure even for Landscapes and architecture the camera will perform well. But that is maybe then almost the end of the story. Recently I walked around, doing something similar, but pictures became better controlled after I disregarded the screen and used the EVF which my camera has

    You really show that the lack of an EVF is not quite the deal breaker it is made out to be. It would have been nice to have had the option of a hot shoe mounted one though. Great video.

    • @AndrewLanxonPhotography
      @AndrewLanxonPhotography  4 месяца назад +3

      Thanks so much! I shoot more often without an EVF so this is quite natural for me. I do a lot of street photography on the old Sony RX1R which came out 11 years and was extremely expensive yet did not have an EVF. As a result, it's small and easy to shoot with. I also find that a lot of street photographers like to shoot from the hip anyway to make it less obvious so I don't know why people are quite so up in arms about it here. Agreed on the hot shoe though!

    I especially like your videos because they are shot (mostly) in Edinburgh where I was born and lived for the first 48 years of my life - running a commercial photography business for 24 of them. It's also unusual for street photographers to shoot with such a wide aperture but that gives you a style which I love. Look forward to the next one.

    • @AndrewLanxonPhotography
      @AndrewLanxonPhotography  4 месяца назад

      Thanks so much, that's really kind! I love using wider apertures in street photography and using that shallow depth of field to isolate my subjects more. I know it's more 'expected' to go with f8 and then shoot from the hip in street work but I'm not sure that style really works for me. I'm really glad you feel it gives my shots a more alternative look! Are you not in Edinburgh these days?

      Hey Michael, I found the 50 1.8 fine on this camera. It's not a big, heavy lens so it felt fairly well weighted. There's a small nodule for thumb which helped the grip but I didn't feel like I needed anything more than that. Thanks for watching!

    • @AndrewLanxonPhotography
      @AndrewLanxonPhotography  4 месяца назад +2

      I don't think you'd see any benefit at all in this over the a7c ii to be honest. Panasonic doesn't have a decent pancake either. They launched the 28 for this but it's f8 which for me would be very limiting and I wouldn't go near it. The S9 is a solid camera, especially for someone wanting to upgrade to full frame for a fair price but I think you already have the better camera. At least, that's my opinion on it!

    • @AndrewLanxonPhotography

      Well it's interchangeable lens, so it has that as an advantage over either of those. And for these photos, no, you probably don't need full frame and the profile could also be applied in Lightroom. This video however isn't aimed at being any kind of commentary on the camera, but instead just shows it in use, and people can make their own mind up based on reviews seen elsewhere and the pics I've taken and shown here.

    Great shots out of camera. But you should try your walk about with a Nikon Z8. Because when you shoot in mono raw, you also import into Lightroom in mono raw. None of this jpeg noncence.
    Oh, I bought my Z8 from one of the may offshore sites (Hongkong) for £2 600. Bargin. I also broke the front element of a Nikon S lens (600mm PF) bought from Hongkong. Nikon repaired it, no problems.

      Hi Andrew, yes I picked that up from your feed. But is seems that all the cameras you have used for mono street POV do not import the mono raw file. This is certainly true of your Sony compact full frame. Perhaps it may be your settings in Lightroom import for the Sony. But my point with the Nikon Z8 is if you shoot in mono you can import the files with the mono profile attached to the raw umage. You import the raw mono image you shot. It is like having a dedicated mono camera, and Nikon's mono profiles are as good as any, including Leica.
      I would like to see what you could do with a Z8. The shooting and subsequent edit.

    So, when I finally saw the specs for the S9, my heart fell… no EVF, no mechanical shutter, no hotshot, and most importantly, no weather sealing too!

      Yeah I agree. I was really excited for a full frame compact. Something to rival the Q3 or to offer what the Sony RX1R (that I still use) offered 11 years ago but with more modern specs. I wonder what happened, given that so many rumors suggested a premium compact was on the cards. It's definitely not the camera I hoped it would be but that's not to say it's a bad camera and I've enjoyed using it so far.

      @@AndrewLanxonPhotographyThere’s still room for an S7 in the lineup! And that could be a more full-function rangefinder with weather sealing and shutter etc. Time will tell. But in the mean time I find this a mostly compelling offering but primarily as a light-carry video tool rather than for photography. Open gate is a significant leap over the competition, along with the MP4 Light and the much tighter phone integration for quick processing and posting. It’s not a form factor I had on my radar screen because I didn’t expect an open gate option at this size and price point for a while yet. Now that it’s here, I can’t wait to get started. On the video side, keep in mind that open gate 3:2 filming is still a rare option relegated to the highest end cinema cameras apart from the Blackmagic CC 6K which is in a DSLR form factor, $1,000 US more with a lot more bulk.

    Super ! A camera you only can use with fixed subject and by day ! For this price it’s a joke …. So many people will be disappointed with banding and rolling shutter …

      It’s not a stills-first camera for sure. It’s very much a hybrid trying to become an up-sell option for phone users rather than as an inexpensive rangefinder for photographers. In theory there’s room for an S7 in the product lineup by the way. Maybe that one will give the photogs what they crave. But in the mean time, this will be a compelling light-carry option for those who do a little of everything (some stills, some video, some vertical shorts) and only work outside when the weather’s fair. When you factor in the flexibility of open gate video, there’s nothing in the market which comes close to the S9. As of this posting, Sony only offers 3:2 video in their Venice line, Nikon/Red only in their most expensive cine cameras, Canon has nothing in the prosumer space. By that measure anyway, the Lumix is one of a kind, and it will push the other manufacturers to accelerate their open gate plans. And in general, I think the Lumix Lab app may set a new standard for camera/phone interaction which will have firmware and app departments scrambling for years.
