    Can I just say, I have to admit, most of the D&D youtubers out there have pretty poor production value and don't articulate themselves well, plus the videos are super long and not that useful. I did not find this to be the case with this video, thank you! I hope to keep seeing more RotFM content :)

    Don't lump the town videos together, it's better for you in terms of searches and views, and better for us DM's that may need a quick specific info video on a given town quickly and could choose another video of shorter length because we are trying to get up to speed 30mins before session start. :D

    • @BobWorldBuilder

      Yeah, the more I think about it, it seems like having the single videos for each quest is most convenient. I may still put the two town-neutral starter quests together, but each town may get it's own short video after all.

    Auril really cannot prevent the sun from rising, because then this would be a wolrd-wide problem, but it only affects Icewind Dale.
    I GMed this as Auril blocking off the sunshine with a very powerful darkness spell. With this distinction, the black cabin adventure ended with actual sunshine and warmth, at least for a small area, and for a little while.

    16:06 I know that dragon! It's not Drizzt strapped to her back, but her former rider, a wizard I think, who she had a very deep and creepy respect for so she always wears him into battle. She also talks to him frequently.
    I'm 80% certain that this was from an RA Salvatore book though. I totally forget which one, not to mention the dragon's name. I think Drizzt is still alive. He cameoed in Out of the Abyss I think (I never played it) and fought in the War of the Silver Marches which was 5 or 10 years before the Lost Mine of Phandelver.

      The mysterious rider is, in fact, the corpse of its former master, a wizard called Meltharond. The dragon talks to him as if he was alive and it is believed by many that she's lost her mind due to that.
      There's a tiny bit about her on Storm King's Thunder, as she's a random encounter there as well

    I really appreciate you suggesting how to make the adventure more fit for smaller parties or single pcs - I always dm just for my partner, so it’s always hard trying to figure out how to balance things without creating and running a cast of NPCs. For this one we were thinking of their character being well not so great and playing up the paranoia aspect to make her adventures either sole adventures or most likely not all of their “party” would return either by the adventure or by them. I think this kinda play fits so well in Icewind’s themes that I think it is totally doable to run for a single person, which is so nice !

  • @davidjay7116
    @davidjay7116 4 года назад +21

    Ok, so now that I actually finished the video--I'd love to see a GM video for each of the towns like you did with the DOISP quests.
    Since you might end up running some of them as one shots for Patreons, I personally wouldn't mind if they're released out of order either (as in, five of the Ten Towns you go through with your group, the rest of the campaign, and then circling back to finish up the rest of the towns). Although I'm not planning on running this anytime soon (I'm only 60% the way through DOISP) so I'm biased there. It's always entertaining and interesting to hear how other GMs plan and run their games though and I'm looking forward to this new series and the time travel! What?! I love the Netherese Empire!

    • @BobWorldBuilder
      @BobWorldBuilder  4 года назад +2

      Yeah, currently I'm thinking one video for the two town-neutral starter quests, and maybe like 3 towns per video after that? I still have to read them more thoroughly to see which ones make sense together. I'm just afraid doing them individually will take so long (minimum 10 weeks if I only made videos about this haha)

  • @ChadHensley
    @ChadHensley 4 года назад +9

    I just recently found you while preparing for DoIP. I love the quick flyby you do if each quest in that campaign. As many of us look to start Icewind Dale, it is unlikely that most of us will move through the ten towns that quickly. If it's anything like my current Tomb of Annihilation campaign, my group might make it out of the Ten Towns after a year. Anyway, I would love to see short 10-15 minute videos that hit the high points of each town and the main quests. I also like your idea of limping the wilderness and weather stuff into a short video. Once you get out of the Ten Towns, it might be nice to focus in on individual quests. No matter how you do it, I plan on watching it. Wish I had the cash flow to support you as I really like the way you create and present content for 5E. Keep up the good work!

    I have started to read the first chapter so far. I am currently reading the Ten Towns. From what I can see there are a few quests involved that don't have any maps. I expect theater-of-the-mind as a way to get the players involved. Perhaps bunching some of these together may be a good idea. I think one video for the two starter quests would be fine. Frostmaiden has a bunch of stuff to work with so this will be quite interesting how you do the guides. All I know is that you will rock this out like your last guides. Perhaps keeping in mind that this is darker and not as light as DoIP. Have fun with this! I know that my players are currently working on their characters now and seeing how to get them involved will be so much fun! Oh and the secrets? I love this concept so much! A video on these would be fantastic as well.

    I'm reading through the adventure and the only thing I don't like is the dragon just automagically flying out no matter what the characters do. Even if you chase the dragon back and beat it, the result is the same: ignore the Ten Towns, do this other thing. I like to think at that point the players would feel sort of involved in the survival of the Ten Towns and the character (Vellynne Harpell) that gets forcefully shoehorned in at that point wouldn't have much grasp on the players, it would feel extremely railroaded. I think you, as a DM, need to replace both Tali and Dannika (Both smalltime researchers characters that don't amount to much) with Vellynne Harpell from the beginning creating a connection with the players, then, I'd make the fortress open up and the dragon being in the final stages of assembly, with a timed forge battle as the Duergars rush to power up the dragon construct.
    I'm also going to mix RotFM with SKT, so I'm still figuring out how to do it, but I want the Duergars to be under the influx of the big bad of SKT, which I won't spoil here.
    IF and only IF the characters completely fail to follow the Duergar track and do anything about it, then at that point have the dragon fly out and show the characters the human cost of inaction. That's fine. But forcing the chapter to play it that way no matter what would feel SO HEAVY HANDED after so much time spent in the Dale.

I'm guessing the intention is to somehow seed chapter 3 & 4 somewhere in the middle of chapter 2? then use chapter 2 quests to close the gap and get people to level 7 to be able to move on to chapter 5+ it's kind of contradicting in the level ranges it gives in those chapters.
