The movie doesn't specifically say but the flash back is meant to be the War of a Thousand Days (1899-1902) which was a civil war in Colombia
Colombia is still in war and this happens here everyday since those years until now, people leaving their towns due to inner wars. Beautiful that Disney showed this reality that still affect us in their movie.

You are making that fact up, it has nothing to do with that war at all, it may be based on the forced displacement of people during a war that has lasted more than 50 years in Colombia, forced displacement still happens, but the movie doesnt have a real historical placement in time, is just inspired in many elements of Colombian culture.
@@waterdragon55 Not really, is mostly inspired in guerrilla type conflicts of paramilitary armed groups that forced people to leave their towns to survive because they were trying to get more and more land for their political, economic purposes like getting areas to cultivate illegal psycotropics and other evil purposes ( I am Colombian so i know my history) Forced displacement still happens to this day, but since the "peace signing" some years ago it has diminished inmensely but...some "obscure remnants" of those illegal groups that didnt want to sign the peace treaty still harm people and towns though in a "minor scale". Is not really towns vs towns, that is waay more older in time. The movie has some slight inspiration in those conflicts in Colombian history but never really talks about it directly nor does it explain it ( is a Disney movie after all ).
I recommend listening to the full version of this song. It's gets even better towards the end. Sebastian Yatra's voice is just sublime. The audio is on RUclips. 💕

The river is a real place in Colombia, it's the river of the 5 colors, some say 7, it's open to public but really hard to get there since they don't sell a lot of things to go, they try to keep the human interactions there as minimum as possible
The second I saw the scene of the town on fire…I was *SO* taken aback. I genuinely did not expect to see something like that in a Disney movie. And then the part where they came up to Abuela Pedro and then- you know. I was speechless. That scene was heartbreaking

About the people attacking everyone, it's not said in the movie, but it's referring the La Violencia. From what I understand, it was a civil war and neighbor turned against neighbor in Colombia because of politics. It's so incredibly sad.
