I think the thing that’s so devastating about this song is that she’s not the only one in her family without a gift/ power. She’s just the only one who isn’t appreciated because she doesn’t have one. Her dad and uncle don’t have powers and don’t feel left out. Her Abuela doesn’t have a gift/ power. But she’s in charge so ppl still respect her. The thing is the Mirabel gets no respect because she doesn’t have a power. If ppl respected her like they do the other non powered people she wouldn’t care. That’s what’s sad. She’s not even saying she wants a gift bc she’s jealous they have powers she doesn’t. She just wants one so she can belong. So she can be seen and appreciated.

Partially yes, partially no. Her dad does actually talk about it, saying he "gets" how Mirabel feels because when he first married he was an ordinary person surrounded by people with powers. And Abuela doesn't have powers but she's respected as the person the miracle first came to, creating the safe haven for the town. It's never really addressed how Felix feels about it.
i mean abuela is the REASON they have their gifts…

She is feel left out.
One of the really poetic touches in this song is how they frame Mirabel throughout. There are a lot of sources of light throughout the song from the camera flash, the sparklers, the doors, the candle, fireworks. Yet through all of this, Mirabel is constantly framed in the darkness, seldom touched by any of the light. And the few moments she is in direct contact with the light, she is horribly backlit as the light behind her drowns her out to little more than a silhouette.
Yes!! Noticed it also in the scene just before Antonio tells Mirabel that he needs her. Abuela can be heard saying "-as another one steps into the light", referring to Antonio, but Mirabel in that scene is covered in shadow
This song hit pretty close to my heart when I first heard it. With my old friends, I would be talking to them, and as soon as someone else they knew came along, they ditched me. This really made me feel like an outcast and that I wasn't good enough for them. Long story short, we haven't spoken in about 4 years.

I love this song in a personal level. The amount of feelings the voice actor put into her voice as she sang made me feel like I was her asking to be appreciated. Today I know I'm definitely loved by my family, but there were times where I've felt like Mirabel when I was younger.

Honestly i related to this song the most, feeling like an outcast in your family, always needing a chance to prove yourself to others , and because of 1 mistake i made sometimes i would honestly wait for a miracle so i would reverse time ,always waiting for something to make that situation better, not knowing what you are suppose to do with life and like always feeling and begging god if they can just show us the path of the life.... YEAH THIS SONG HIT SOME SPOTS FOR ME
Tbh I can rlly relate to this song, something like this happened to me when I was in elementary school. I had moved schools like a month or two before and I had amazing friends whom I loved and they loved me. Then this girl from my old school transferred and she used to bully me. She told my current friends that I used to bully her and she showed them scars and they believed her. They ended up telling the whole school. I was suspended for a week because my mom helped me get out of getting expelled. I was bullied by everyone in the school and eventually started to eat lunch with the lunch lady (we became like besties). Now I’m in middle school, my old friends found out the truth and asked for my forgiveness. I forgave them and we are kinda feigns again but we don’t talk much at all.

I think it’s interesting that this is one of only two soliloquy’s (when a singer has a solo number with them dancing or walking around but the other characters don’t move or acknowledge their presence or that they’re singing, as if time stopped) I’ve seen in Disney. The only other one I’ve seen is Speechless in the live action Aladdin.
It definitely highlights Lin-Manuel Miranda’s influence and his musical theater backgrounds.
