I graduated in 2002 and had not studied at all or looked at questions online and a month ago I took the prep exam of 200 questions and finished in 1.5 hours and passed! I guessed mostly and only knew a small percentage of questions! I guess I was lucky!

I really appreciate this THANK YOU. I just paid to take the exam so will be spending time studying. I studied for months before the holidays but since then have bogged down awhile. Now I am inspired to get going. I do have Howard Rosenthal's materials and that was encouraging - I will be glad to use the sites you mentioned and maybe even buy the flash cards. I graduated in 2006 but last year took four extra courses because my PA Master's was not deemed enough. Had to supplement. Did it during the pandemic. Now on to studying. I took notes as I listened - but I might listen again in a month or so. : )

Had to give you an update.... I passed! I graduated in 1996 with my masters and had not looked at a counseling book since - really. Thankfully, your commitment inspired me and I passed. I did take it from home and loved that option. Thanks for your help!!

@@martymichelson I had to stop in my career bc I had a special needs child with rare issues. I graduated in 1995 wit masters but went back and began some classes in EDS around 2006 and 2007. I was working in Behavioral Health. My son passed away 4 years ago. I have come out of the fog and ready to go forward and take the exam. I was told too many years have passed from someone at University and that the board would not okay me at this point . I have been distressed about this. But I see you have been able to do so . Please advise.!!!! Thank you kindly... I REALLY need direction
@@DearDana Peace to you. I'm sorry to read of your son's passing. And, sorry for how things are complex. I'm happy to give you more direct experiential perspective, and we can talk about that if you want (www.peaceandflourishing.com to find me). Noting that - the *key* issue is what credits and courses you took *when* you got your degree. And, if the program was accredited. I can't give you a definite answer, and I'm sorry for your distress, though my guess is, at best, you'll have to add/take a course or two . . . though, if you completed an accredited program you *should* be okay. Though, I will also note, that 1995 was quite a while ago and course curricular programs *will* have changed! 100%! The question is, how you might be able to be "grandfathered" in and/or what "deficiencies" you would need to make up.

Awesome video. I have been procrastinating. More fear of failing I think since I haven't been in my field of counseling for so long. It seems that every time I make up my mind to take the test something else comes up. I Like the strategy, and you have motivated me to stay focus and just do it.
Stick with it Rosemary! It is *not* an easy test for the vast content and timeline of the test itself. With study, and deliberate preparation, you can succeed!

Super, Ambrose. In my opinion, and it is just that, my opinion - a person should begin to study for it and take it as soon as possible. The work for the exam has overlap with clinical practice, though it is different also. If a person takes the exam early, there are only three outcomes (1) they pass and the test is behind them! Woot! Move on with life! (2) They don't pass and yet they realize they were very close, and they can use their next weeks and months to focus more carefully while in clinical practice to pass within a short time after taking the exam the first time. Or (3) They don't pass and they realize they missed a lot of points, it was very hard and then they make conscientious and intentional decisions about clear and programmed study times over a longer period of time to insure they *do* pass the next time! Fortunately I’ve got good resources and tools to work through. I think major exams like these are often more daunting than what it’s meant to be, and that makes it seem so overwhelming, but with a solid strategic approach it’s all doable. You can do it! I'd encourage you to get study materials early and find some casual way to make reading and engaging routine. Becoming familiar with theorists and their theories [and all other professional areas, ethics, practices, etcetera] takes time and the more time you have, the better you become acquainted with them.

If you sign up for the web based practice tests - my encouragement is to take lots of tests quickly - and not get bogged down in what you miss. Of course, on the test, have your timing practiced and focused! :-)

I passed 2 weeks ago. I listened to the Howard Rosenthal CDs to and from work every day and read the encyclopedia of counseling. Studied like that for about a month. The exam had a lot of stuff I didn't recognize but I knew enough about everything else to reason my way through to the right answer. Understanding the concepts and theories of psychology in general will benefit you just as much as memorizing names and facts. My overall experience, it wasn't that hard.

My colleague passed the exam days ago, and she's planning to create a video to share and she'll link, etc with this one. She shared with me that one thing she'll highlight in her ideas is to *not* take the exam until a person has had a few years of practice because, in her opinion, many questions could be answered by experiences in the practice, as much as study in a textbook!

I graduated with my Master’s in 2006 - well MORE than a decade as well. I failed twice - the first time I did not study AT ALL, actually thought my education would help me pass. Second time, I didn’t study enough. Hope to get some tips here!
Graduate programs have a lot of variety in what they cover! Persons should certainly plan to study for *this* text, in my opinion, understanding what is expected for the NCE specific categories. :-). I hope this gives you keys to study, though you'll need to get into books and other resources like those that I share! Wishing you success on your third exam day!

I wish you success. *** I read somewhere in a comment thread or something from Dr. Rosenthal, something about how he has resisted making his content in digital download, because of piracy. Sadly, he's correct! After I bought my copy of his work, I had a former student who is an audio expert, create a personal digital copy of Rosenthal's work for me to use as my private copy, since I had paid for the content. I don't know how to do this and had to have an audio expert help me. I wish Dr. Rosenthal would digitize his content, though, he's certainly correct that it would get pirated - such is the nature of a Napster and post-Napster world!

Correct, Tim, the NCE. I only took the NCE, though as I understand it, the NCMHCE is based on ten case studies and the test taker focuses on assessment, diagnosis, treatment and clinical practice. The NCE is more broad in scope, and covers more theory, history, and other issues within the 200 multiple choice questions.

Yes. And I hope knowing this, you can create a strategy that works for you. As shared, my strategy helped me remain calm, even as I was feeling pressure. I hope this helps you, too! I think if I were to make the video again or re-test, I would note that I had three functional categories (1) confident (2) questioning confidence and (3) not confident or not known.

I studied (on my own), prepared and passed the NCE in one 4-hour sitting. I didn't buy any study guides, just kept thorough notes in my notebook, organized and studied everyday. The key for me was studying everyday and quizzing myself. By the way, I took the exam while I was pursuing a doctoral degree. It can be done

I'm preparing for the test now; however, I do not graduate until April of 2022. This was very helpful because I am trying to create a plan to achieve my goal.
Planning is the way! If you have a year, I'd encourage you to just plan to pick up a book/resource a couple hours a week intentionally set aside! Taking lots of time will give you the advantage for your success!

Joe ! It's been enough months ago now, that I can't be precise in my answer to your question. Though - I do remember a few things. (1) The test questions and their answer prompts at both websites were *different* and I think there was value to me in using both of them! (2) Neither of them was "precise" to questions on the NCE itself, though I did feel that the NationalCounselingExam dot com website had "fuller" and "longer" Q and As that "felt" more like what I experienced on the real test. (3) I liked the brevity of the tests dot com site. (4) If you forced me, I'd say that NationalCounselingExam dot com website offered more, so may be a better deal, though I felt both were helpful and each had variety and difference that helped me "feel more at ease" with what I might face when I took the exam. I hope this helps!

Do you have a list of the mnemonic devices anywhere? I got audio study materials but about 5 hours in and they haven't listed any... :/
I'm sorry that I don't have a good list of mnemonics. :-( I did create several of my own and I do think personally created ones are best, since they make sense to the person making them. My encouragement is to create 1, 2 and not more than 3 mnemonics on days studying. And then practice them or reinforce them for the next day or two until they settle in - AND - be willing to change them if you come up with a better mnemonic. I played around with several!

@@JD-kv3qo I passed! Praise God! Thanks for asking. Marty gave good advice and tips. I had to tailor some of His advice to my ability to answer and read questions within my time limit. ( meaning I'm a slower reader and took time for me to process the questions ) However, I did take a break the 1st two hours and remembered to keep my play list in my head as well as positive affirmations. I had about 60 plus minutes to go back and look at my flagged questions. All in all Marty’s advice was a great way to help me with my anxiety.

Since I didn't take this exam, I can't reasonably give you precise advice. Noting that, studying weeks in advance, with various sources of material, and with a plan for how you'll regulate your emotions and experience during the exam will help you, I am sure!
I just took in January and missed passing by 22 points. The purple behavioral health app is a good tool and the thick book study guide by Helwig I believe was helpful. I just didn’t give myself enough time to study
@@2000eryn Thanks for your note! I'm curious how many months/weeks in advance you studied and found that insufficient? Can you share? I think persons seeing the comments would like to know. I took 6 months, with serious concentration in the last 2 months, and deliberate focus in the last 2 weeks.
This is the graduate student version of the NCE (basically the same, content-wise) so any NCE study material will work I believe :) Good luck!

I failed my test this past Saturday by 7 points. This is my third time failing since 2016😪 I don’t know what else to do, and whether I should just consider an entire diff career path. I studied my butt off, did fairly well on practice tests, and am beyond discouraged and depressed at this point. I’m in debt behind a degree that I can’t even put to use in its totality all because of this stupid test. Also, I can’t retest until at least another 3 months, because Pearsonvue makes you wait at least 90 days.
I am sorry! I am certain this must be so very, very stressful for you.
Let me try to be the "voice" of "calm" to you and consider this. While it must be very, very discouraging - and while it must feel defeating - the couple of hundreds of dollars to take the exam is the small, last bit of the many thousands of dollars you have invested. Even if you have to wait and spend money again - if you don't pass, your debt is for nothing.
WHEN you do pass, your debt has meaning and can be paid off with what you earned!

I’ve taken the NCE twice and have failed both times. I have one more shot to take it or I’ll have to figure out another career. I think the biggest challenge for me is retaining and memorizing what I study. I used Rosenthal book to study and every time I took the test everything I studied wasn’t on there. Any additional advice or suggestions to help me pass?
N E I'm sorry to hear about you not passing. There is a LOT to memorize! A lot to retain.
As you know, the test has so much information, it requires study across a lot of content areas. I would offer two suggestions, both of which are more critical for you since, if you don't pass, you have to face professional choices of great magnitude.
(1) I would suggest you review the online testing sources I share at the end of my video. Even thought these cost money, and subscriptions can be hundreds of dollars for 6 months or more, this is something you should seriously consider as an investment, not an expense. If you don't pass the test "every dollar" you've already spend is "lost." I'd encourage you to get good subscriptions to these websites and practice the tests they offer.
(2) The test questions come in "subject specific areas." I would encourage you to become aware of what areas you can answer more successfully - and less successfully. Focus your study on the weakest areas since those areas are where you will be missing the most questions, and you don't want to miss questions!

Can you please describe how on test day you were able to flag the questions that you needed to come back to? On the software that the test is administered, are you able to flag a question?

The test has a tutorial to "the layout and format" for the test that you complete before you start the four hour exam.
For me, on the test day, I arrived about 20 minutes early. Waited.
Then, a test administrator in charge of "me" and "my station" took care of my Identification, Confirmation, Palm Scan and explanation from the test administrator on orientation in the waiting room. This took 10-15 minutes.
Then, she set me up for just a few minutes at the station, headphones, how to adjust chair, explanation on "raising my hand" for a break, etc.
Then, I took about a ten minute explanation to the test itself. In this set of prompts, on the computer screen, it shows you how to answer questions and the "flag for later" category. [I don't remember the exact term, "save to review" or something.]
As I type this, I realize it's a 20 minute process at minimum before you even start the test, and that might not include 20 minutes or more waiting by arriving early etc.
To answer your question, a pre-test computer tutorial explains how to flag questions for review. :-)
@@martymichelson thank you so much for the feedback and information. This detail is so miniscule but for anyone that has dexterity issues, it is not minor at all. The whiteboard they give you, is the marker the big chunky dry erase marker or is it the thinner dry erase marker? This is legitimate question I have re: writing on dry erase boards because they require more attention then a piece of paper and pen.
@@katiebabcock6037 I don't think this is minuscule at all! It's important for accessibility! I can only write to *my* experience. I was given two "pages" of "white-board." They were slightly larger than a "page of paper" with some kind of lamination. I'm 90% positive they had "graph lines" on them. The pens, as I recall, were "standard" size pencil/pen size (thin). I do know for certain the pens and dry-erase-graph paper I was provided were imperfect. I don't recall precisely, but I think one pen did not work at all - or one of the "pages" had spots on them that didn't allow the "ink" of the dry-erase marker to stick. The pen/paper was imperfect, for sure. And, I was told that if I filled them, I had to ask for the person to erase for me, as I recall. I did not complain nor ask for assistance, as I elected to "work with it" and focus on the test questions, not my imperfect in quality dry-erase pens/dry-erase markers though, your question prompts me to note that if I were taking the test again - I would check these items *before* entering the testing room and get good pens and good paper from the testing administrator.

I'm surprised you didn't have a tutor present during the exam or pay someone else to take it for you. I can sit here and think of every possible study method and resoource known to man (and make some up). It must be nice to have that kind of money and time available. Peace to you. I'm not sure what it means that you've "been getting B" though do you know that the test is Pass or Fail (?). If you are getting 80%, in the traditional "B" grade level, you should be in passing range! I hope! Does this help?

i was thinking there was no actual math on this test,. Do you mind telling us what kinds of problems we will be required to solve?
You do need to know how to distinguish percentile data from percentage data, and have a good working "sense" of how standard deviation data works. You don't have to calculate the deviation or percentages, though if the content is in a question (and I think it will be!) you do have to understand what it means and how it functions.

When I completed my exam, within the next few minutes they handed me the paper I show folded in the video - so I knew "instantly" that I had passed. Are you inquiring about the page I show with my test scores? If so - that paper was printed for me at the PearsonVue Testing center and had my test scores by category. In some way this data is transferred to whatever State you work with based on what you submit to PearsonVue with your personal information that is then provided to the State Board Licensure process.
I should add that I live in NJ and will have to do 4,500 hours under a supervisor. Also - I am going to be 70 in January. Ha ha. We will see. I'm adding PRAYING FOR GOD'S HELP to your excellent list. : )

How many questions can you get wrong on the test and still pass?
Forty questions on the NCE are unscored questions that are being field-tested for future exams. Those questions will not count towards your score, which means the maximum score you can receive on the NCE is 160.
If you receive a score of 160 on the NCE, it means that you correctly answered every single one of the scored multiple-choice questions. That almost never happens, so don't be discouraged if your score isn't perfect. You just have to meet the minimum passing score for that exam. So, what's the minimum score? Unfortunately, there's no single number that is used. Each version of the test is different, and the minimum score needed to pass is calculated by a panel of experts who consider the difficulty and scope of that exam. This is a scoring method known as a modified Angoff method, and it's meant to ensure that every exam is scored fairly.

Time wise, how long is the exam?
John ~. My apology that I don't remember this exactly and I know there is an exact answer. I think it is 4 hours total - and a person can finish as quickly as they like. If you'll listen to the video (which I'm not going to engage myself! ha!) I share that I took something like 120 minutes to complete the exam and then I took two strategic breaks over the next 120 minutes or so as I methodically went back through the exam. I hope this helps! I'm blissfully so far removed from the exam now that I don't have to retain all the specifics! ha! 🙂 ~ marty

Yes. There are 200 Questions. However, it is something like 40 or 60 of them that are NOT scored against you as they are being sample tested on the test, by the Board Administrators. 200 Questions have to be answered. However, only 160 or 140 are scored.

Ha! Yes! In retrospect, I was a bit over-zealous on that repeated statement in my video! ha! I recorded this days after finishing the exam, after two solid months of daily study for hours . . . so I was still both celebrating my excitement at passing - and - "coming down off my adrenaline" of hours and hours of study in the previous 60 days, daily!
