When birds get away if close enough, try to hose them down and they won’t be able to fly when their feathers are wet.

@@ddelv583 yes, to an extent. When birds get soaking wet, they are weighed down like you wouldn't believe. My conure has a hard time flying in a straight line after a bath, and you can literally hear how labored his wingbeats are bc of the water

Had a nice pair of Yellow Golden's many years ago,my male was skittish and flew right past me, watch him soar into the woods. Those hens are missing grit or oyster she'll in their diet that's why they eat the shells. I'm a poultry judge in Michigan, have had birds all my life. I never saw the male again. That happened 30 years ago. I am so thrilled that you are teaching your family about small farms. Anytime I can help just reply to this comment I will see it.
    Good LUCK!!

I didn't read any comments so I don't know if you know this but you only need trim the secondary as you said on the video but also you should only trim 1 wing as they can't adapt to missing the feathers on 1 wing but will learn to adapt a sort of flight to both wings trimed.

    • @whitehouseonthehill

So glad you caught the pheasant; I am sure he was just as scared as you. The security measures look like they will be effective. I really think the banding is a good idea (sometimes a regulation is logical and not simply a useless expense). If you raise many pheasants, perhaps they might be marketable enough to make you a profit. (Note I am a retired physician and I have no idea regarding the pheasant market although I know some people just love the taste of pheasant).
Your new little one looks well as does Becky.
Mail time was nice. There are some talented people who are so nice to share their production with you. I also enjoyed the cultural exchange with Japan.
So glad you all are happy & healthy & still having fun.

  • @ChristianBrandoni
    @ChristianBrandoni 4 года назад

You should have tried to seal the egg with some breathable film like parafilm.
If you leave it open like that it will be too try for the chick and also expose it more to bacteria.
I saved some eggs that I accidentally open thinking they were dead while they were simply few days behind other eggs(can happen if eggs are not fresh or different breed because of different thickness).

I dont remember how he did it but growing up I had a neighbor who had a little farm like yours and like you he had l types of chickens, quail, pheasants, Rolling Pigeons. And one crow that could talk. The crow he clipped its wings somehow so it couldn't fly away. I remember it didn't seem to hurt the crow because I was mad thinking he was hurting the crow but it never mad any sounds or movement that would make you think it was in pain but since it could say a few words and he wanted to teach it more he didn't want it to fly away if it got loose somehow. He had one before that could alot of words and one day when his daughter was feeding and watering the birds she forgot to latch the latch on the crows pen and it got out. The wife noticed it wasnt in its pen several hours later and seen a crow just walking around and it would get close to her but wouldn't let her pick it up. She was convinced this was Pete the talking crow so she called her husband at work again to update Pete was still there but she cant catch him. Her husband told her to try Nd keep and eye on Pete and hopefully he sticks around until he gets home. He told her to put a pile of corn out and that should keep Pete happy and stay around for the next three hours til he got home from work. Well Pete few up in a tree and started doing crow talk and she said that about three blocks away there was a woods that was about 20 acres and there were at least two other crows in the woods she could tell they were both talking back and forth to Pete and Pete eventually flew over to the woods and they never seen him again. Hubby was very upset but not at his wife or with Pete but himself because he told his wife to lay a pile of corn out for Pete but he should have told her to lay the pile into his pen and when he went into the pen close and latch the door. Pete may have went into his pen at any time during the hours of his freedom except for the fact when wifey first noticed Pete was loose and out of his pen she wasn't thinking right and her first response was to shut pen door and latch it back up not like another bird would escape because Pete was only bird in the pen she didn't even realize what she had done because that pen was home to Pete his feeding place and his security so he may have tried several times to go back Inside but just couldn't get in. Sorry so much blabbering but maybe a vet can clip the wings so if they get loose least they cany fly off

@@whitehouseonthehill Order yourself a large cast net (fishing) on Amazon. You can cast it when you see him and catch him that way. Just stand in your yard practicing casting. You'll get good at fast. You can also open it and set it 6 feet or so above an area that you want to set bait and if he comes to eat. Drop the net. They're light and won't harm the birds.

@@johnchase4408 That's actually a good idea. However, wouldn't the weights be dangerous if they popped a bird in the head?

Ashley Godfrey most of my cast nets have a separate rope tying the weights to the net so you could just snip that rope and pull the weights off

@@zakarymcleod1850 I wouldn't think you could get it to open or really go a distance without some type of weight. It is a good concept, though. Hoping the giant net he bought will help.

The most common problem in broody hens is when you see them "eating" a chick, is from them knowing that it didn't develop all the way and still has a sack left or because the chick has other complications that won't allow it to live long. The mother instinctively kills the chick in order for t not to suffer and die slowly. If you see a mother pecking at a hatching egg, leave it alone. If she kicks eggs out fork under her it's also because they are bad eggs and won't hatch, unless you have candled them and know there is life, leave them be.

The first day we had our Golden Pheasants I found out how easily the tail feathers come out 😫 But they have grown back now only a few months later.
My female Pheasant has laid one egg, that's it. I have put it under a broody hen. I keep checking for more eggs but it's been a week now and no more eggs.

The tail feathers will grow back after they molt. Had the same thing happen as well. It does take a while.

....JUST DOUBLE-DOOR...DOUBLE-GATE...DOUBLE-SCREEN...ANY ENCLOSURE WHERE PRECIOUS ANIMALS ARE KEPT....I rescue dogs, and my main entry has 2-gates, so that if I screw-up and a dog passes by as I am fumbling to close the 1st-gate, the dog is prevented from escaping by the 2nd-gate....Works Every Time.......ALSO.......Most Birds will Gravitate Back to their Familiar Home, where food and water, and especially their Mate/Mates are kept.....You can always put a Female in a small cage, open the door to the Coop, and most-likely, the Rooster will simply wander back inside the Coop for food, water, and his Mate.....Best to You.
