Queen contralto, very underrated! Her voice is honestly unmatched, inherited, sensual and divine. It's like she is always effortlessly gliding and whispering softly (or loudly lol) through the lower notes. The singing two notes at once is kinda scary lol but cool! Never realized she could sing so high either. She's mastering complex vocal arrangements they will go over folks heads lol who don't get it.
Alberto Maracheski great job on this! i love 'when you life was low'. she rlly is the first daughter of soul coz the apple doesnt grow far from the tree! i may wanna do a studio only VR of her and a live only VR of her
Alberto Maracheski And I usually get hypnotized when I see her singing live... Btw, search and watch she singing "Love Is All Around" with Rachelle Ferrell, Ledisi and Rahsaan Patterson... If you like jazz improvisation, this video is the HEAVEN.
MY WORD, her lower registry is phenomenal. The C3 harmonization at 2:28 sent me! 11:18 - 11:29 was SO stunning, 11:32 - 11:39 was gorgeous. qkshkhqecjlhqlcjlqkcjwlcjqwlcjqclwjchlqwcjqwkc @ her polyphonic singing. HOW THE HELL DOES SHE DO THAT?
I felt like you should have started with the HIGHEST note going down... THOSE LOW NOTES ARE INCREDIBLE! Who else on Earth can hit them? For me, that's the highlight of this video. ^^ Thanks for appreciating the real talented ones! =D
she is so underrated what the hell!!! now this is some real sanging !!!! Kudos to all other contralto singers Anita Baker, Toni Braxton, Brandy Jazmine Sullivan, India Arie and Kim Burrell that have been holding it down all these years but Lalah Hathaway you are awesome where have you been all my life its time to let her shine I'm need her to get a new Marketing and PR team this voice needs to be heard worldwide in every village and and containt
I used to nurse my broken heart to "I'm Coming Back", largely in part to her taking her time to give birth to each note of sadness, just as much as the lyrics themselves. Its like each note is a lyric of its own. Wasn't her mother a classically trained singer? So Lalah couldn't help but win!
Wow! :D She's such an excellent singer! Powerful low notes, enchanting head voice register and stunning polyphonic abilities!!! :O I bow to her talent...! o.O
Exactly, as was her D6. I'd say her range is G2 - C#6 which is impressive in itself, but anything higher than that was a squeal, squawk or squeak... unsustainable and not part of her range.
Lala is trained as hell and she is a master vocally it's definitely part of her range, she has done it in other performances and it sounded much better she just couldn't pull it off in the clip in this video
Honestly i think people should stop categorizing people into vocal groups cause people like Tina Turner's range is too widely to be in one so people fight over what they think she is and coming out with new terms. Lala is very wide in range
Actually, I might revoke that statement. I don't think she's an assoluta; the color is simpler & consistent. She's probably a rare type of contralto, like Annie Lennox - just translated to the purest of jazz / soul / gospel. Specifically, the coloratura contralto. That androgyny & low range, and scratchy middle belts are there for a contralto, yet she has no problem carrying through the fifth octave in head voice as through the third octave in chest. It's low-placed & androgynous, yet very bright & light for that contralto quality still being there. You know some people think Annie Lennox might be a mezzo for similar reasons? The same applies here. They're not mezzos; just *very* light *contraltos.* Like Annie she seems to carry her chest voice up to E5, but no more. So lighter than Cher, but deeper than Shirley Bassey, and as agile as Mariah. The pseudo-soprano head voice is also there like with many other contraltos -- as well as the "split" that creates it (and allows her to sing polyphonically, like in Diamanda Galás' work).
Lalah is a lyric mezzo soprano, her lows are slightly artificially darkened and not as resonant as they would be for a contralto (for example compare her B2 with Annie Lennox B2 in Little Bird), her voice has a typical size and a warm rich sound of a lyric mezzo, it blossoms and thins out in strategic mezzo places. Just because someone can sing brilliantly from top to bottom doesn't mean they are some weird rare fach, which are not even recognized amongst many experts (falcon, assoluta, dugazon).
@@violetsrayreikishop2shes a mezzo. Compare her to a true contralto and you will hear a difference. Contraltos have androgynous voices whereas if you hear them sing something without seeing them you will have to ask yourself is this a guy…she can sing low but it’s still girly
I think she sould use a more twangy aproach on her belts at least on the high ones. Her voice is dark enough to use it without becoming shrill. I think it would give her more ease up there. I'm not sure, I'm just speculating.
Clearly a lyric mezzo, her voice is medium sized and warm, her lows, especially below E3 don't have enough ease and presence to be a contralto (and they are artificially darkened), she doesn't sound androgynous in any area of her range, her belts sit in the comfort zone of a classic mezzo and her head voice loses tonal quality above A5. Wonderful musician with a trained voice, great ear and a golden timbre.
@@ThePianoguy89 oh yes! Dileesa Hunter, whom I love dearly, calls Sade a contralto because of her songs being set so low in the chorus/climax, but I disagree, if a contralto sung these notes, they'd be punchy, for Sade it's just sultry crooning, kind of underwhelming live (not because she's bad, it's just too low sometimes), she's a classic lyric mezzo to me too. I think people don't know how rich a mature mezzo actually is, because popular music is so oversaturated with undeveloped light lyric sopranos and they never get to hear other voices.
ImperfectbutRedeemed She's An Alto So Of Course She Will Use Her Lower Register More But That Still Won't Change The Fact That Bey's B2's Are Way More Easy And Just As Resonant As Lalah's B2's Plus I Actually Didn't Say That Beyonce Has The Best Lower Register I Just Said She Has The Best B2's And That Is True I Have Yet To See A Female That Hits B2's As Much As Beyonce

her contralto voice is out of this world.. I love all the sopranos but when you hear a contralto voice imts seductive and unique
Mezzo*
Nope it's a mezzo
Contraltos voices are way darker & have a significantly lower tessitura than this. She’s a Lyric mezzo w/an excellent low range extension.

sweetchari I get it.And I also love her lyric contralto voice.Lalah can Sang her pretty little ass off.
She’s actually not a contralto
my vocal coach told me to study her discography if i wanna be a great R&B singer! WOW!
Lalah is GREAT to be a a vocal reference.
Her discography is pure quality.

Agreed.
her low notes are the best part of her voice
Aretha Franklin
Brandy Norwood aka Vocal Bible

Deleon Raye CSI true but I want too keep her all to myself I love this women voice sooo much omg
none of those people are contraltos except for lalah maybe
The Real Tamartian areeee mezzos with a strong lower register. i can see why youd say toni, im not 100% sure about that but jazmine is def a mezzo

Yes both parents are singers/artists 🎁🎁
Y'all all like beyonce, rhiana, and all these other female r&b artist are life... Child PLEASE get you Life! Lalah is the B.O.M.B
She is!!!! So is bey
Nothing against bey.. But I'm just saying lalah got it

14:00 Now that was perfection 👌🏾
Thank You!!!
Beautiful Jazzy Voice.
How can she make chords from her voice? I want to do that.

That C7 is inhaled tho.
The songs are from her complete discography.
She is amazing! The better
i wouldnt consider the C7 part of her rnge, it seems too squeezed

Is there anyway possible you could jus list all of these songs?
contralto for women. Tenor for men she's a female Tenor for sure 💙💙😁
It's like me. I'm a Countertenor...In other words, I'm a male Mezzo-Soprano range singer.
Chad Guindon Countertenors use falsetto not mezzos.
Edward E no they dont. Falsettoist use falsetto. Get outta here with that shit.
Edward Wheeler You sound foolish, what are you mad for sir? Why couldn’t you just say no they don’t and explain without all that extra stuff?
Contraltos are basically female Tenors and she isn't one. Low, dark voice but Contraltos sound basically like men which she doesnt. A lower Mezzo
While most people are trying to be sopranos, the contractors are enjoying life in the lower registers. Their voices dance across the music pages.

What song was the B2 of 1:19 from?
Her lower registry reminds me of Jazmine Sullivan, and that is a compliment as i hold her on a pedestal ;)
It's from "I'm Coming Back feat. Rachelle Ferrell".

omg sorry for not replying earlier and thank you!
she's unique
ate that C7
Yummmm....... chest notes
What does it mean when it says it's harmonized?
Different notes blended together coming out at the same time.

Muito louco esse negoco de fazer duas notas
How does that "whooooh"after 13:00 mark sound like she has echos every time?
