    I'm playing DD since it was available as Early Access on Steam, and Leper is still my favorite character. Since FilthyRobot only bashed him for not meeting with his standarts I think it's only right that I'll point out Leper's strengths and how to use him.
    He features a very clever design of someone who's shunned by others, it's clearly evident in his abilities and camping skills, so you should treat him as such, a lone wolf. He's entirely self-reliant, he heals his own stress and damage, buffs himself and can also take attention from others by marking himself. That's what he's meant for, he's a front row tank and DPS class.
    Filthy argues that his biggest flaw is inability to hit position 3-4, but what he doesn't point out is that Leper can "bring" enemies that occupy position 3-4 to a front row (position 1-2) by removing those who occupy front row currently. I had a lot of save files, but one that persists is the 260+ weeks one from Early Access, I have Level 6 Leper and I use him often. I used word "removing" earlier cause that's what Leper does, his damage is so high, even in Champion dungeons he literally removes characters from front row on the first turn, or at the very least sets up a kill.
    For example, let's take a party of Plague Doctor, Occultist, Crusader, Leper; on first turn Plague Doctor (who's fairly fast) can stun position 3-4 reliably, while the others deal with positions 1-2, on turn two all you need to do is clear corpses and the Bone Courtiers or Pelagic Shamans will be moved to position 1-2, where they will be dealt with by your DPS characters, very simple concept.
    He also has a bit of utility in him with Withstand and Intimidate, both skills, in some scenarios, can save the rest of your team from Death Door checks, cause he will mark himself and attract attention of enemies such as Fungal Scratchers with 100% certainty. The debuff on Intimidate is also extremely strong, don't let others downplay it.
    Funny thing is, his offensive skills, if you compare him to Hellion for example, only feature 10 less accuracy than hers, so his accuracy is not that atrocious. With Sun/Moon Rings and Focus Ring or Ancestor's Signet Ring he will hit very realibly without any problems, though using two trinkets for accuracy can be a bit of overkill, especially since he has the godly Immunity Mask, or something that suits your tastes. Get Leper with Quickdraw/On Guard, lock them in, also lock Natural Swing and you'll have the best position 1 character, in my opinion, after Abomination, of course.
    It's a long post, but if you read to this point, hopefully it was helpful, and thank you for reading this, have a good day.

    • @Mish844
      @Mish844 4 года назад +5

      It makes leper useful only under assumption that you stun back ranks and kill front first, which is completely reveresed. Front ranks are usually significantly less dangerous so they shouldn't be your priority. Now, while this approach of front first, back second, would be still viable if you were able to remove front ranks in turn 1, while you can expect to stun targets.
      Not to mention, why even bother? Stun back ranks, while killing them, it will give you better results than trying to oneshot tanks. And I didn't even mention that working front first completely removes your chance to heal and stress heal yourself, using the remaining 2 enemies, cuse you simply won't be able to outheal ranks 3,4 unless all their dangerous abillities are disabled, and there are enemies from ranks 3-4 that can still deal more harm to you than you can fix. Hence, target them first.

      @@Mish844 except those enemies become significantly less dangerous when moved to the front lines, were they can't use their best moves

    • @Mish844
      @Mish844 4 года назад +2

      @@theprofesser944 Dead enemies are even less dangerous, and if either you move attack misses or enemy resits move your Leper can't do shit with them. Not to mention that he 's so slow that those enemies will have a turn to fix their positions while doing some harm and you gain nothing. If you decide to stun them instead then they won't be able to do literally anything and if you take 2 regular dpses instead of someone with move and Leper then you'll be able to deal more consistent dmg.
      No matter whether you are looking for a kill on them using Leper or make them irrelevant for a short period of time, there are better ways to accomplish either of those - dps who can attack them directly and stuns.

    I really hope they rework the Leper in the sequel. He’s my favorite character design and personality wise, but he just doesn’t add up on higher difficulties. If there are any newbies watching, don’t let this video scare you off from using him entirely. The Leper can be an invaluable asset in certain combats, and will likely be an unstoppable force during your first play through. He’s easy to understand, his animations are badass, he has a humongous, fatass final fantasy sword, and he kills people with POETRY. Just make sure you pick your fights well when the Leper is on your team: never, EVER get shuffled. Grab a Focus Ring for him as soon as you can. Buff his accuracy and damage through the roof, and watch the bodies drop.

      Another thing to add in using Lepers (Which I finally used after months of avoiding them) is that thre argument of trinkets is null and void really.
      The high damage is what allows you to increase his accuracy instead and the high health and resistances and self heal is what allows you to use that high damage.
      The Leper does not need its damage buffed.
      So just to give the good guy some justice. The accuracy cap in the game is 95% as their is a hidden 5% done during calculation. This is 95% cap after enemy doge. Average dodge is somthing like 15% if you include everything (Appart form the 999% and 200% enemies you can't hit.)
      So Lepers end accuracy is 95%. You give him natural swing +5. Any of the slayers gives +10 accuracy to that type. Give him eldrich slayer, most of the game is now +10 accuracy. So we are sitting on 110%. Slap on a Petrified Amulet +10 accuracy. Now we are on 120% Accuracy.
      Remember that 15% is the average dodge, the heighest around 25-30. So against most enemies he has 105% Hit which is 95% in practice. Against high dodge 90% just 5% off max (Which the bonus"
      For the last trinket you can give him another accuracy the heighest being the class 8% or the rare 10%. Which would give him perfect accuracy against almost everything.
      As stated before you can do this because the Leper has High health and high resistances, or you could turn him into a self marking tank.
      Now we need to see if this is worth it.
      End game Leper hits for 13-26 and with max accuracy trinkets hits 130% essentially a very slow perfect hit. Or you can risk the biscuit and increase damage a bit taking you to 120%.
      Highway man hits for 9-16. Lets be fair and not use point blank. To get the next highest damage we need wicked slice (We are going for damage to see if a highway man can out damage a Leper with accuracy trinkets vs high accuracy highway man with other trinkets.)
      Wicked slice has 105% accuracy. Very nice. Plus the 5% we are at 110%.
      Assume that the skills are the same so we have a bonus 15% accuracy. give a Crystalline Gunpowder +20% damage and add on +10% damage for other trinkets one increases melee accuracy by 5% as well I believe. (Of course you would never run this as you can't, highway man has not got the health or the resistances but does have speed. A nice set is the 45% virtue chance 2 piece set. Or you go for accuracy again, or whatever.)
      So we have a highwayman with 135% accuracy doing +30% damage the highest hit being 22 damage. compared to our 26 damage 130% accuracy Leper.
      The highway man has perfect accuracy and so can the Leper with proper trinkets.
      SO on a torch run the Leper only has his speed as his downfall, which can be slightly sorted with luminous, quick draw or a replacement of a trinket that will bring him back down to 90% accuracy.
      On the Hardest difficults enemy dodge can increase between 12 and 30. Not sure how it is calculated. So lets be harsh. -30 accuracy to both of them.
      The leper at max accuracy has 70% accuracy at the highest dodge. The highway man has 75%.
      If the highwayman has accuracy trinkets he can reach 90% accuracy with 5% change to miss.
      Hence the Highway man is the safest option but will do less damage.
      The Leper can be played around with though and taken to stupid levels, with Jester or plague doctor you can do so interesting combos, either blighting and buffing or having 4 nukes, however with Jesters it is better to just have 4 but the Leper or 2 Lepers can provide a tankiness to the group.
      So that is the mathmatical analysis of the Leper potential. In light the Leper is let down by speed but is in turn a nuke, whereas the highwayman is safer. It can be argued that as a less damage Leper may fail to ohko low health enemy it is advised to risk the 5% miss on high light as the decreased damage would mean that the enemy would hit you anyways. (A sort of arguement against the "Leper can't hit and so he is useless.")
      In a darkest situation the Leper suffers but can be buffed. Take your pick. I used to skip on Leper untill recently and I had fun with my Leper, who proved to me singlehandedly why I should use him with some good RNG from compolsion giving him luminous and natural swing. Not the Hero I deserved but definatly one I now want.
      I apologise if my math is wrong.

    OK so let's see what you got wrong:
    1: "The crusader is better from the crew because his AOE gets a bonus to unholy" This is not true. Zealous never did bonus damage to unholy.
    2: "His base skills have 20 less accuracy that other unit's skills" Also untrue. His 2 base attack skills are only have 10 less accuracy that other units base skills. This isn't a very large number considering 1 trinket fills this difference and leaves you with a unit that not only will still have higher damage that whoever you're comparing them to with literally any other trinket in it's stead, but also benefits from damage buffs greater than any other unit.
    3: "The leper is too slow to be of any use in the rush part of the fight" This argument is only true if your party isn't running a high scouting build where surprising the enemy is quite frequent. When you surprise an enemy team with a leper on your team, he almost always grants you a kill on one of their front liners on his own due to his massive damage.
    4: "You could be bringing a unit that can control the fight like a stunner" The leper is just like any unit in the game, a tool with a job. You need to bring the right tool for the right job or else you'll fail. Using "Could have brought a stunner instead" As an excuse is a poor one due to the fact that he's not preventing you from ALSO bringing a stunner in your party. For example the bounty hunter works excellently with a leper due to flashbang being able to shuffle a backline unit into his line of sight. The plague doctor also works well due to the fact that the leper can deal with the back 2, the leper can deal with the front 2, and the other 2 can either use utility effects or assist with extra damage.
    5: "The leper can only hit the front 2 ranks" I hear this complaint constantly from players that don't understand how good the leper is. Sure he can only hit the front 2 apart from his debuff, but that's all he really needs. The leper will always have something to kill if you're good at the game, because you have 3 other units that wont be limited to the front 2 ranks that can take on the back liners in his place. And if the leper's out of targets than congratulations, he's done his job and the others aren't pulling their own weight.
    6: "The problem with reflection is you're bringing a leper" What I'm hearing is "This camping skill is incredible and makes up for the downside of the leper outright making him offensively better at damage dealing than any class in the game but I'm going to say it's terrible because I don't know how to use the leper"
    7: "The Leper is the worst" Learn how to utilise a strong unit.

      Actually, being that I use lepers regularly and love them to death, I agree with everything said in this video. The leper's kit is actually inferior to the kits that other classes could bring. The hellion fulfills the lepers role much better than the leper does, being able to not only stun the front row (instead of attacking it), but also being able to quickly dispatch the backline. Additionally, if you bring alot of herbs, you can use breakthrough to deal with not two, but three enemies with absolutely no downside because you can use the herbal medicine to remove the debuff next turn over. In the event of high protection enemies, if you have someone else stunning them, the hellion can also apply a bleed to get through it. The only thing the hellion can't do is provide itself with high protection and self stress relief. But compared to the lepers weaknesses, that's nothing.
      Their only saving grace is their high damage scales well with damage % buffing. Since they get the most out of each buff. Which unfortunately, is a situational benefit, which is what this video is explaining. The lepers bad situations are more common than their good situations, which is why the class is bad.
      There will be more fights where you want to stun someone, more fights where the front line has high protection, and just enough party shuffle attacks to make the lepers life a living hell. But most importantly, there are more situations where you will want something that the leper can't provide.

    It's worth noting that Withstand and Solemnity got reworked slightly since this was recorded. I think people like him because they hire him early, before they fully understand the game. Admittedly on Apprentice dungeons he pretty much one shots everything with his high base damage, but as soon as you go up to veteran/champion enemy speed, dodge, HP and damage increase severely, prioritising the back line stress dealers becomes crucial, and the leper's shortcomings become painfully apparent

A good synergy is a stun focused houndmaster in rank 2 with a damage focused leper in front, the houndmaster attacks first and stuns, and then the leper uses his greatsword and nukes the boss or enemy. I know you're judging character from the "hardest difficulty, low light", but you have to remember the developers weren't. Low light is meant to be a strategic choice with negative tatical consequences for later gain. Not a difficulty setting. He may not be good for self imposed chalenges, but his Acc is more than bearable when you have light (which, ironically, shouldn't affect the leper, as he is factually blind), and his damage pays dividends. So this is really a just case of you trying to use a chainsaw to carve a bronze sculpture instead of cutting trees.
    TL;DR: he overperforms some classes at high ligh, where his strengths are accentuated, and underperforms at low light, where his weaknesses are most visible. The exact opposite of the antiquarian, in whom the high light nulifies the loot advantage, but low light accentuates it.

You basically use any trinkets or teammates you can to compensate for his glaring weaknesses: accuracy, speed, inability to hit back rows, and being moved. And then you have to make the case for why you're compensating so hard for these shortcomings, when you could use a more flexible character that fits with more compositions, has more utility, and lets you push their strengths instead of covering weaknesses.

      Yeah, you can use his ability to buff his accuracy, or you can bring another character that doesn't have accuracy problems and use that turn to kill or stun an enemy, or heal stress or hit points.
      Leper is a niche character, and I'd argue his niche is the early game, where he doesn't miss as often and he can carve his way through the front ranks with ease. As soon as you reach the more difficult missions, though, he simply becomes not as good as other front-line characters with a more diverse toolkit and/or less glaring downsides.

    Let me fix him for you:
    1. Give him accuracy trinkets (e.g. CC set) + his camp buff before important fights.
    2. Put him in the front rank. Have a plague doctor in the back rank.
    3. Stun enemy back ranks with plague doctor.
    4. 1-shot enemy front ranks with leper. Note that this might sometimes require outside help. But not too often.
    5. Tank the rest of the fight while simultanously healing yourself (yup, you can buff your prot and distress with a single skill! Also heal + buff resistances!). Other characters can use their time for healing/distress if they need it or just, you know, take a break to play cards or something, because at this point he can handle the fight alone.
    6. 1-shot remaining enemies whenever you feel like it.
    You mentioned how abo's healing/distress skill is better than both of leper's. You are forgetting one VERY important thing tho - leper is a few times better tank than abo. Leper using both of his skills can survive much longer (both health and stress-wise) than abomination using his every round, mainly because he can distress while AVOIDING heavy damage (prot buff), instead of having to heal it a lot. Well, except now he is even better at this, since his prot skill is battle-long and the other one does heal and distress at the same time.
    Really, you should have just said that leper doesn't suit your playing style rather than saying he is/was garbage. I'm quite happy with my 70dmg crits, thank you. And even more so with my 40dmg double-crits.

  • @themaniomarian
    @themaniomarian 7 лет назад +11

    But lepper skills and traits are what his lore give to him. Lepperosy cause blindness, so that's a reason why he have less accuracy, etc.
    The whole thing is that FilthyRobot said something like "high priority targets are at 3 or 4 position and they are need to be killed first". These monsters are harmless on 1 or 2 position, so killing their mates on that position's (and clearing their corpse) eliminates high amout dmg to party health, and nearly all stress dmg (exeption is critical).
    Lepper is some about "High risk, high reward". It's risky to use him, becouse there is no 100% certainty that he hit and kill frist two targets and shuffling is risk when there is lepper in party. But if player menage to take care of it (use accuracy trinket etc), lepper brings death to all high hp monsters, even those with high PROT are not secured against his sword.

      @themaniomarian 7 лет назад +2

      Maybe You'r right, but I see him as good part of team if only player take care of his bad traits. It's matter of player strategy to decide that he is good or bad. Your strategy is to deal with stressful monsters first while 1 or 2 position should be stuned. It's good strategy, but stunning that stressful monsters and dealing with those damaging health is also reliable strategy. It's even easier to stun two last position with one move if you have witch doctor on team.
      Mayby I'm wrong becouse I don't play the hardest version and mayby there lepper suck, but I don't think he suck that much. If on dark mode he is usefull, that must be also true on dd+.

      This work on normal difficulty. Opposite of what work in ng+ but still. Stuning those stress dealers and killing their tanks fast enough (this is why i think lepper is hero that fullfill his role) brings high priority target on 1-2 positions. Only madman could do stress from that position. There you could recover more hp and stress. I know that even this strategy don't work when monster party have high hp tank in it (giant, lobster etc).

  • @noone7863
    @noone7863 7 лет назад +5

    An easy way to balance the leper would be to give one of his abilities riposte (while marking him at the same time). You'd deal damage to all enemies that attacked, negating that problem of having limited range, with the trade off being that he'd have to tank a lot of damage and stress. Like a tank should. It would make him useable.

    • @CtisGaming
      @CtisGaming 7 лет назад

      He is usable. He's not a tank- he's a damage dealer first who does far more damage per round than any other damage dealer, eliminating threats immediately, and can self sustain himself with both healing and stress. His camping skill reflection completely negates his downsides.
      His accuracy is also only 10 points below the crusader's as well.
      The only problem with Leper in this video's scenario is that you're going without light, scouting, or camp skills on the hardest difficulty and this youtuber doesn't account for using other party members' multi-target stuns instead of rolling with a comp where everyone has a stun. In this scenario you can never depend on any character to stay in any position ever and so specialists are doomed immediately. It's also the stupidest strategy as it guarantees you'll be ambushed every battle and that precious speed he loves will go to waste anyway. This is also why acc is a precieved problem here as that's HEAVILY debuffed in no-light. This is akin to throwing a character into a spike pit with a flashbang and saying how well they'll work in a team while ignoring the rest of the team.
      He also overemphasizes the back row. They're easy to stun and kill with everyone else.
      The Leper can also be placed in position 2 if 1 is required by someone else.

    • @noone7863
      @noone7863 7 лет назад +4

      CtisGaming, I'd argue with him having the highest HP in the game, and self-heals, stress heals, and self-mark abilities he is a tank first.
      He does have high damage. But then, the front two rows are also typically the tankiest units, coming with high health and protection, and skills to even buff this (which they can use because the leper often goes last with his poor speed) and so it's rare that he will deal optimal damage, let alone eliminate threats immediately. And if he doesn't kill a target, which his poor accuracy leans towards, then more damage and stress will be taken, making it harder to recover. If he's primarily a damage dealer then he's, more often than not, terrible at his job.
      Filthy explained that he rates this based on the hardest difficulty, which makes it easily applicable to easiest, but I see your point. If you do play with plenty of light it would make it less of a problem.
      Killing the back row is important. Though they're easy to stun with the plague doctor for one round there aren't many heroes that can kill them in a single shot reliably (despite their low health). So you will still have to deal with them next round, which the leper cannot do, and as they're often stress dealers it is important to get rid of them. Stress is a far more precious resource than health - if your heroes become afflicted, they start to act beyond your control, making poor decisions that cost a lot of time to recover from. Worse still, if a hero has a heart attack they lose all their health, and are likely to lose it again, and no amount of healing can fix that. So having a leper smack the front row while the stress dealers drive your party insane isn't often helpful. It won't matter how efficiently the leper dealt with the damage dealers in the front, because when he inevitably has a heart attack from the rampant stress, that spared health doesn't count for shit. This problem is negated by having a damage dealer that can hit more than the front two rows.
      Furthermore, the front two targets can be exploited for recovery time. Some of the high protection mobs don't deal much damage, so leaving them until last allows you to stun, or leave them, to give your other members time to use healing abilities or buffs. If the leper does his job and kills the front line then there will be no good recovery time; sometimes you can bring a stress dealer to the front row where they are useless, but by that point they've dealt far more stress than can be healed, making the recovery time completely redundant.
      You can get trinkets to help his speed, you can use his camping skills to buff his accuracy, you can bring team compositions that debuff protection so that he can kill front row targets, you can get stress healers, you can buff heroes to deal with the back rows, but by that point, why not just use another hero? If he's such a handicap that you have to spend precious resources on him just so he can be adequate, why not pick someone else? That to me makes him more of a burden then someone of use.

    • @CtisGaming

    Small error at 5:32, the Crusader's AOE, Zealous Accusation, does NOT have a +%DMG against Unholy, only Smite does.
    In fact, the only difference between Hew and ZA is a +10ACC buff on ZA and a +2% Crit on Hew, against each other.

    Just want to add that the Leper is INSANE in the endless harvest, being able to one-shot almost every enemy that does not have prot (and some that has low prot) with the right party composition. His crit % if buffed by jester and man-at-arms (the way I approach endless) and the right trinkets (such as focus ring) can score numbers close to 80% if you are able to keep up the buffs. If he gets shuffled you are damned. But since the enemies keep spawning in pos. 1 and 2 in the endless harvest, not being able to hit pos. 3 and 4 is not going to be a problem for the Leper. The only down-side of this tactic is that stress-damage dealers usually spawn in pos. 3 and 4. so be sure to bring some virtue rings if you are using the jester only to buff. Oh and when I meant he could one-shot enemies, I meant 2 enemies at the same time, not 1. If you strike only 1 enemy, even high prot enemies might instantly die or be brought to very low HP. Also with his battle-long buffs, he becomes almost immune to blight, bleed, debuff, stun and get very high defense to move, if paired with Immunity mask (which you should use). His speed is of course the main problem, but battle ballad increases the whole team's speed, so even if the Leper is the last of your party to act, stacking 3 battle ballads will still ensure that he is going to play before the 4 enemies. Unless you are facing something with very ridiculous high speed, which is extremely rare outside of boss-fights. So yeah, I would not bring either a Leper outside of parties with no healers or stress healers (which I love, as weird as that is. Nothing beats 4 grave robbers in my opinion for example), but yeah, he IS solid.

      use a man at arms with a buff build, and the purge completely negates the low range as it gets rid of all corpses. leper is great if used rightly, he can self heal, do insane amounts of dmg and again he proves a great utility with purge. i like leper, he is a good tank and doesn't need help from other classes meaning your healer can focus on the other 2 heroes.

    Good job, Filthy, really good analysis. One thing: I don't enjoy torchless stygian or bloodmoon because it seems the only way to play those modes involves long and. tedious stress-heal 'cheese.' Mayhaps Leper is only good versus bosses and other limited scenarios... but regular enemies and scenarios are simple and easy! I don't worry much about min-maxing against spiders and grave maggots. Plus, who doesn't love see big crit numbers? #LeperDidNothingWrong

  • @TheSp0kesman

    Perhaps I don't play optimally, but I quite like having a Leper around as a high damage tank. Unlike the Abomination he can work with a Vestal and Crusader. I also love to run a plague doctor with him, which coincidentally is good at keeping the back row busy with stuns or putting them down with blight over time. Just because the Leper won't hit 100% of the time doesn't mean he is completely useless in a fight. High alpha damage may look bad on paper, but in reality, the chance at taking an enemy out of action can make a real difference, before dps starts to matter. Personally I just stack damage buffs on him and eat the misses when they happen by stunning with other characters or using my healer.
    I just felt that the leper needed someone to stick up for him is all.

      graverobber is really awkward for me, the flashing daggers lowers bleed resist but she doesnt have a bleed move. The throwing dagger has a dmg bonus on marked but its only 25%, her lunge is great but it throws the team comp out of order. and she doesnt really have a 4th move.

    • @volodymyrboitchouk
      @volodymyrboitchouk 7 лет назад +6

      what do you mean she "doesn't have a fourth move"? She has pick to the face and poison dart. With the dlc you get a item that makes her melee attack deal insane damage and she has one of the best items in the game (i think its called the raiders talisman; +scouting, +trap disarm, + dodge, +acc and it just makes her eat more.) I don't even bring lunge, I prefer bringing shadowfade if I'm worried about enemy shuffles getting her out of position 3. Her basic ranged attack even grants bonus acc, she is by far one of the best options for wiping out back liners effectively.

    • @RopeDrink
      @RopeDrink 7 лет назад +5

      If you consider 'shuffle' as a problem, you're running immobile comps. Graverobbers as far as I'm concerned are in the top-tier for great damage, arguably the best mobility (2 fwd, 1back stunner), can fit into DoT comps, mark comps, or just raw damage/CC comp, best trap disarm for free stress heals (when not critting like monsters), attacks for all rows.
      Take Pick to the Face, Throwing Dagger, Lunge, Shadow Step. All you need to get her where you need her without moving others - or, you can do what I do, run GR>GR>GR>Vestel and lunge like a pro.

    • @161patox
      @161patox 7 лет назад

      I like the GraveRobber but i also hate the GraveRobber, she is pretty versatile being able to hit every enemy position from every party slot except for first, that said, her character is based around crit, dodge and speed (mostly dodge) since she has pretty high of those but that makes it so she can completely shine and destroy everything and be untouchable or be a really sub par character since she has mid to low raw stats like health and damage.
      TL:DR she's kind of inconsistant.

    Hey FilthyRobot, just discovered your channel and as a
    darkest dungeon enthusiast I love it already, but I can’t help but push back on
    your arguments. On week 15 of a dark
    run, I did a long cove veteran quest, with 4 level 3s all at level 2 weapons and
    armor. My comp was 2 lepers, a bounty
    hunter, and vestal. I cleared with no
    deaths, only one hero above 50 stress, and an inventory with literally every
    slot filled with heirlooms. I did the
    same thing the next week. These two
    weeks gave me over 250 heirlooms. I specked
    damage and accuracy on the lepers, and stun on BH, and scouting on Vest.
    Yes there is opportunity cost in giving accuracy items, but
    the 2nd damage item you give up is accounted for in the leper’s base
    stats.
    Yes they can’t hit the back row, but if you run two lepers,
    and give them stress increasing items they get targeted almost all the time
    anyways and they can both heal their stress.
    Moreover, even if others get targeted, their Quarantine camp skill is
    very strong to counteract this (especially if you have two).
    Add in a BH with hook and stun balm to get targets in range
    (heeling stress with ~100% trap disarms), then as a whole, the comp is more
    stress resilience, and a does hell of a lot more damage than any other comp I’ve
    played (in my 220 hours).
    And I know the damage feels like overkill, but that
    translated to higher probability to one-shot, and great value damage on SOME of
    the bosses. I’m not sure if I’ve articulated
    this well (I should really get off of RUclips anyways), but I would be honored
    if you could give me your rebuttal to these point. I have no doubt you know more about the game
    than me. :)
    Good Hunting!

    • @BunnyHoppin-
      @BunnyHoppin- 7 лет назад

      try it with a Plague doctor instead of bounty hunter. She can shuffle and clear corpses, 2x stun back ranks, and brings DoT to the table to deal with high prot enemies. My last character of choice (with 2x leper and PD already slotted) is Arb. She can mark enemies to reduce high dodge (madmen and squiffy ghasts), can outright 1 shot crit back liners, can boost the healing of both lepers as well as the PD's usually insignificant heal, and if the party gets shuffled she can move back 2 spaces saving the party time. All of that + arb also has very high health for a back liner which just adds to the party's silly high health pool.

  • @Althemor
    @Althemor 6 лет назад +1

    In the early/mid game I found him somewhat useful when combined with a bounty hunter (primarily thinking about ruins here). When you knock back the front guy and pull in the former last rank the enemies will spend half their turn doing nothing particularly useful. If you are really lucky and one cultist walks past the other with his stumbling scratch or something like that, this may extend even to enemies that weren't hit at all.
    The more experience I gained with the game, the less I used him though. Nowadays I use primarily hellions as front ranks, then crusaders (stress heal + light is good for more casual farming runs as it saves money) and men-at-arms.
    I'm not particularly experienced though, haven't ever gone into the darkest dungeon itself since I only rarely play the game (and I started the file before Crimson Court and don't use that either).

    This is a very bias review of the leper tbh. He makes valuable points but he only focuses on the negative points of the leper. As well he doesn't talk about the group combinations that the leper excels in. Honestly what it sounds like is that he didn't equip the leper with the right group/items and found himself in awkward situations where the leper had no good target or missed. In some points you actually argue against your earlier statements. The whole point of this game to create a party that offsets the weaknesses of the other characters in combination with other items.
    So sure if you're comparing Leper as a solo dungeon running hero, then yeah your review is spot on. But then you could go down the list of shit heroes that don't do well. I mean I could go and say oh I don't recognize the vestal because she's ONLY a healer. She doesn't have any stress heal and her stun is shit most of the time with a relatively low stun chance past the early game. And if she gets rotated out of position 3 or 4 then she does nothing and you spend time trying to shuffle her back. Focusing on only the negatives becomes really easy without talking about why you really include her into the group.
    You include the leper for strong nuke damage to the CURRENT pos 1 & 2 with a lot of self sustain. He stress heals himself much of the time through his crits on his heal or attacks while being one of the most durable front liners in the game.

    • @TheKnyght123
      @TheKnyght123 6 лет назад +7

      Considering they fulfill completely different gaps for a team, that statement is absolutely false. I know you may listen to this mans word as gospel but heads up, it isn't. There are plenty of speed runs that use a leper because this niche he fills. Hellions aren't even NEARLY as tanky or self sustainable as a leper, not by a long shot. Also Hellions have no self sustain, their heal is a joke with a really nice buff attached so to say that hellions fill the role as leper would be to say jesters fill the role of hellions.
      Secondly, clearly you missed the point of what the initial comment was about. If you listen to him talking about the Leper, he complains that you have to basically waste items to offset is incredibly bad accuracy but never references back to the point that the lepers have higher than average starting stats that already compensate for using one decent ACC trinket. Also regardless of everything, he doesn't even bother to talk about where the Leper does fit in because of his personal bad experience with him.
      So no....any team good for a leper is not instantly good with another. I recommend you put some time and research into the game before you decide to reply with another hair-brained comment that is based purely on one youtubers feedback.

    • @Badbentham

      It clearly has to do with the approach that Filthy found out to work best for him; - namely crowd control, and win the war of attrition. what is for most RPGs the safest way to master high difficulties. In this sense , the Leper is about the opposite of the Vestal: Awesome (front liner) stats and DPS, but low utility. Also, if you fix his Acc, his low speed and movement still remains.

    • @huntersuper98
      @huntersuper98 6 лет назад +3

      You have to take into consideration that this is from the highest level of play at the highest of high difficulties. The leper deals high dmg and can tank well yes but why have a leper when you can have a crusader who does good dmg and can tank but has so much more that he can do like stun and stress heal unlike the leper. Personally the leper is my favorite class but even with all the changes that has happened and buffs he has gotten I can still see the glaring weaknesses.

    So I did a little bit of thinking and came up with a list of small changes that would make the Leper significantly better. Chop and Hew: Give them a normal crit modifier (+7% at lvl 5). Purge: Make it stun in addition to the knockback and corpse clear. Withstand, Solemnity, Revenge: Make these skills usable from all 4 ranks, and make Revenge move the Leper forward. Intimidate: Remove the self mark (often does more harm than good), and increase the damage to something like -50%. (Debuffs are generally weaker than stuns, and most stuns are only -60%).
    Now he has a stun, a skill he can use to fix his positioning, and a way to at least help finish off backline enemies. I don't know if these changes would actually make him good, but they'd make him feel a lot better to use, and wouldn't make him overpowered in the slightest.

    You are analyzing the Leper in a vacuum. I can rely on other cc chars to bring the casters in the back to the leper, and the leper make sweet sword-love to them. My most powerful combo is 1 Occultist, 1 Plague Doctor and 2 leppers. Whatever is in the frontline just melts from the leepers, and whats in the back is plagued or shuffled. I call them the "meatgrindinders"

      it not true Filthy why is a hellion better than a leper 1 an 1 compared? the hellion needs a damage item the leper an accuracy item what a different story ...
      the leper has more hp then hellion and crusader at the frontline (im not sure with crusader)
      yeah he only hit 1-2 but you can build a team arround the leper and it works fine
      with this strategie i could say the abdomination is garbage because you need to build a team arround the champ or the stress from the morph kills your crew...

    • @RopeDrink
      @RopeDrink 7 лет назад +6

      Meanwhile, other compositions are mincing priority targets without having to play around babysat Lepers. Tell me how awesome your meatgrinders are when the two of them are in back 2 and you're using move to get them where they need to be. I think it's safe to say everyone has a soft spot for the Leper in DD - but just because you can compensate enough for them to become situationally awesome does NOT mean everyone else isn't doing a far better job than he ever could.

      My initial point that judging team-intended characters in a vacuum is pointless, still stands. While switching chars around by enemies in various circumstances consumes 2 actions of the backliners, its not that bad, tbh. Everybody's tanky and healing goes all round, let the good times roll!

      His self heal now helps deal with stress, revenge only needs to be used once for the whole battle, and I feel his accuracy in later dungeons isn't his big problem.
      He is slower, and he REALLY wants to be in the front two ranks, but holy moly, he hits so fucking hard. Have other members in your party focus the back, while he single handedly nukes the front.

    2 years too late, but the Leper is a Tank/ Damage dealer. He was also reworked to be able to heal AND stress heal at the same time, so with a party comp of Vestal-Jester-Crusader-Leper, you can buff him to obscene levels and completely eliminate the party shuffle downside. (Dirk Stab/Finale, and Holy Lance to fix the shuffle.) In that comp or similar ones, he's incredibly reliable as a damage dealer, a remarkable tank, and autonomous in his own right. I'm always a fan of the odd one out, so the Leper has easily been my favorite class since the beginning. Just play to the character, and form your party with his weaknesses in mind.

    I actually personally really like the leper, as he does a massive amount of damage, and is good against multiple bosses. He also does do good in basic fights if instead of running intimidate and solemnity, you run purge and withstand. My favorite party to run is Dented Steel, where it's leper in the front, followed by crusader, bounty hunter, and vestal. Vestal has enough healing that his self heal isn't necessary, crusader has the stress heal, bounty hunter has the flashbang and finish him in order to partially deal with the backline. Purge allows him to clear all of the corpses in the way to get to the back liners. I would recommend trying this.

    Dude, just wearing Sun Ring + Ancestor's Pen and running Withstand instead of Intimidate makes him a consistent self-contained unit with huge damage, good accuracy and self-healing/self-stress healing. He's just so autonomous, and because of it he's my favorite character.

    I played this game way back in the early access days and can say that Lepers were much better back then. The devs just didn't seem to account for the fact that the addition of things like corpses and prot were huge nerfs to Lepers. The class needs a reboot to get with the times, imo.
    I know the devs aren't that concerned with making all of the classes perfectly balanced, but when you've got a class that this bad, it's pretty clear that something has to be done. The Leper might as well not exist. There's no actual reason to use the class that's based on logic, and not emotion... and that's a problem. The Leper is basically dead content.

      No, I meant exactly what I said. If you look at him from a logical standpoint, he's terrible. You'd only use him because "Ooh, he looks cool and sometimes he hits things really hard!". That's an emotional reason.

    One thing you are overlooking is how party speed synergyses. Purge away the front as the last action in the round because he's slow, then kill the former rank 3 that got moved up with a higher speed recruit like one of the Highwayman's melee abilities, or stun them with Barbaric Yop? I don't recall if the highlander or barbarian or whatever her name's speed is.
    Hew is also okay against The Flesh.

    Well while he's critting and one-shotting Crimson mobs left and right while also never getting diseased or bled I'll take this information into consideration. With one acc buff from a jester or a man at arms this guy immediately becomes a powerhouse.
    Same thing for pulls. It's almost like party synergy is as important as character statistics, who'da thunk?

      If you want to be technical most people considered animated projects that come from japan as anime. Although not limited to exclusively japanese an example is Shelter although that was animated by a japanese animation company called A1-Pictures Most children unless not allowed to or can't in Japan has seen or watched One Piece. A lot of people over there STILL read and watch one piece since it's still the largest bought manga at around 12.5million chapters bought a year. And if you really studied in japan for a year and have NEVER heard of someone named Rin before then did you lock yourself in a closet and study that entire time? Also you did say that people who watch anime and make anime are degenerates, want me to quote you? "Hunter Super people who watch anime are degenerates it is made for degenerates just get over it and i know it is a hard pill to swallow but that means you are one too" I'd suggest you stop backtracking on what you say when there is proof that you said it already. If you had actually been to japan you would know how big of a thing stuff like One Piece is over there. I think you are just bullshiting to try and save face since your fragile ego can be shaken by one guy who decided to call you out.

    Did Crimson Court change much in terms of the gameplay of DD? I felt Antiquarians were even worse than Lepers after gold gain was buffed in the Stygian-patch, though I suppose that discussion is kinda moot since those are the worst two classes by a large margin.

    • @RakusoTheTroll
      @RakusoTheTroll 7 лет назад +1

      Antiq class is not a good class, but still better than the Leper. They have a job only they can do (Gold+) and have weak but decent skills. A heal for all pos to save Deaths Door, a self-guard which synergies with Riposte classes, a decent Blight Dot against all positions. They are like a bad version of a Plague Doctor

    • @glaive120
      @glaive120 7 лет назад

      Having one or 2 is nice when your money is on deaths door from upgrading skills and weapons often

    • @volodymyrboitchouk
      @volodymyrboitchouk 7 лет назад +1

      RakusoTheTroll the riposte synergy with HWM or MaA is absolutely monstrous. it guaranties that against almost all front liners these classes get multiple attacks per turn and all but guaranties the death of all aoe dmg dealers.
      it also guaranties that one party member will be taking extra damage while another will take none. this means that you can focus your heals more and makes items like the book of rage pretty decent because you can kinda guarantee the item holder will take damage.
      frankly I would not consider antiquarian anywhere near as bad as lepper as long as you have a good party comp.

      Eirik Bager Sundmark Imo she has her use, namely taking her on suicide missions with throwaway characters you picked from the stagecoach for the sole purpose of getting as much gold for as little investment as possible. That strategy may not work that well in the highes difficulty, but on the lower two where you have all the weeks and deaths to spare it's very effective

      Anti's purpose is to farm no light apprentice runs with your level 0-2 characters for 40k cash stacks. She's not a combatant, she's a utility character. That being said- I have defeated the heart of darkness with 4x antiquarian in normal.

      Why does no one ever bother to mention how tanky he is when he uses "Withstand", or how fucking god tier his camping skills are?

    • @RopeDrink
      @RopeDrink 7 лет назад +2

      Because other classes have equally good camping skills and withstand is pretty pointless - nobody would ever really take it over Intimidate and solemnity. Using a turn to get tanky when you COULD be controlling/killing enemies or contributing to recovery. Tankiness is like Healing - the game isn't designed for you to outheal or outtank content. An MAA gets tanky by guarding someone else - ie. it's actually useful. If you're taking Withstand or Bulwark (Crusader version) over other abilities, it's a huge waste.

    • @youtubeisdead1858
      @youtubeisdead1858 7 лет назад +1

      If you're tanking, you're still controlling their damage and reducing it.
      Also, no other character has skills like Leper. Reflection only costs 3, and makes the Leper more accurate and gives a high crit chance while reducing stress. Quarantine can give a huge amount of stress healing at only a cost of 20% of their hp, which for a very tanky character, is amazing. Let the mask down gives a negligble stress to the rest of the party while allowing the leper himself to recover stress, and Bloody Shroud adds resist.
      If you have a good tanky character, you can prevent effects from being transfered over to allies who aren't built to deal with them, like DoTs, stunning, movement, etc.
