as a 41 year old that lives on his own, I just can't afford to injure myself. My employment relies on me a lot too, i look after a few employees, manage a fleet of devices at an offsite contract and i also coach a bunch of kids on the side. However I love MTB but these days I'm happy to just ride the easy fire trials and watch videos on youtube of pros. Best of luck and speedy recovery sir

I totally agree mate. We are responsible to a lot of people . People rely on us being at our best and finding the balance of getting enough out of it is crucial . I’m almost 55 and have had these conversations with myself often .

    • @malmtb

Agree with you both, Abs and Mick. I am lucky to have a public service position that does afford sick leave. After 20 years in a role, I have a buffer. But most are not this fortunate. With sick leave depleted in recent times, the risks of any feature, or day out on a bike are increased with consideration going to those that rely on you. The risks just got higher, but I don't think the stoke increases the same.
In short, we ride for our own enjoyment and needs (physical and mental) beyond that, you might say is showing off.

Hey man 44 years old here had a few gnarly crashes double member of the clavicle club. My first big crash resulted in Dr's finding a 10cm tumor on my heart meaning they didn't worry about the fact I had broken my clavicle and concentrated on open heart surgery and reconstruction of the right ventricle in my ticker. I guess you could say why would you want to ride after that well I ride for my mental health it's me time away from the world phone gets turned off and it's just me mates and the trails.

Snapped the end off my collar bone, cracked a rib and broke my wrist 12 months ago. 6 months with a hook plate in my shoulder.
At the end of it all the thing I realised was that for me, not being on a bike was far worse than being injured and all the recovery.
I can't stop riding but I do need to be more carefull.
I guess eventually I'll have to give up enduro. That's why I've built a fully rigid steel MTB, so that its actually entertaining riding green trails and something I can use for a bit of bikepacking and gravel.

Hi mate, this video resonated with me. I’m the same age as you and 12 months ago I had a crash with similar consequences. Came off a jump doing about 35 kms/h. Big concussion, about a dozen stitches around my eye, 4 broken ribs, collapsed lung, damaged spleen and heart complications (pericarditis) as a result of the heart swelling from being bashed around by the crash (felt like a heart attack - scary stuff). That happened in July 2023 and it was a slow, painful recovery. But you do recover. I was back on the bike about 7 weeks after and at 10 weeks I went back and rode the same course I crashed on slowly. By the end of the year I was riding regularly and pain free again and I even went down to Tassie and rode the Bay of Fires trail (43km) in January of this year. No doubt at the place you are at now you are still feeling like complete crap but I can assure you it does get better.
I know how you feel about the guilt of worrying loved ones though. I was riding by myself (as I often do) when it happened and don’t do that too much anymore as it causes my wife too much anxiety. Not sure how to get past that after effect of a bad crash tbh.

    • @malmtb
      @malmtb  2 месяца назад

How did you get help from that crash? Did someone come along by chance? Sounds horrific Brendan. Glad to hear you're recovering. I can imagine (quite easily these days) the conversation you must have had with your wife when you announced you'll be going riding tomorrow/weekend or when ever.
Riding pain free in 7 weeks is astounding. Well done!
Getting past the after effect as you put it. I expect it is a personal journey, individual to each of us.
Is there a way I can get in contact with you? Thru Insta? Dont put a number here. My Insta is instagram.com/mal_mtb/ if you could DM me. Cheers.

I'm not sure anyone knows how to come back from what you described. Holy Hell! But it is clear you found a way. As others have said in several different ways - the risks of not riding are greater than riding. SO we find a way to meet our own needs on the bike, and carry our loved down the trail (metaphorically).
Its not always an option ride with people, but minimising the stress of our wives is our responsibility.
Cheers Brendan, so glad to hear you have found your way back. Thank you for sharing, it is inspiring.

Heal up well chief! Few years ago I broke my tibia. Clean fracture so it healed up nicely. Then back at the beginning of this year I blew my wrist up pretty good in an urban crash haha! Still feeling it just a wee bit, but I got back on the saddle much earlier than the doc suggested. So the extended healing period is on me. Whats crazy, however, is the broken tibia playlist on my mtb channel Better Than Not Good MTB was a huge help for a lot of poeple. The inspiration for others going through something similar was really a unique experience. Folk asked if I'd sign their names on my cast. It was a lot of fun. I hope through it all you are able use this time to remind others there's still plenty of things to learn and do despite being off the bike for a little while. I had a good stack on that track 2 days ago - thankfully just scratches and bruises.... this time. I've been through it before with a Navicular in 11 pieces. Not fun. For me, it was 3 months no load bearing, no driving either.... I was back on the bike (off road) in 4 months, much to my doctors and partners dismay. While I was off the bike, I started watching the mtb youtubers of the time (2018) like BKXC, Seth'sBikeHacks, SingleTrackSampler etc. They got me through the depression of not being able to ride with my mates. All the best with your recovery, it'll be long but those first few rides will be so so sweet. Oh and to answer your question about why I ride, I ride for mental clarity. Nothing helps me beat away stress and anxiety like a few hours in the bush on my bike.

    G'Day mate,
    Hope you are feeling OK.
Ourimbah has bitten me a couple of times pretty decently. Last one in about 2019 (slow fall on some sand on the Roller Coaster section that destroyed my shoulder) had me sell my almost new Rocky Mountain after just three rides as I had at least an 18month recovery ahead of me (that took three more surgeries and about as many years) and didn't know if I'd ever ride MTB again. I was away from MTB for about four years until this past March when I finally got back on. Bought an eMTB and have been getting back into it at a leisurely pace. I've quite literally just been doing Amaroo runs and the odd XC lap plus tootling about on teh very large reserve near my place.
At 55 I've finally gotten to the stage where I'll stop and look before blindly going over something. It feels like a double edged sword though. One side - I feel safer in checking. The other, I feel like a bit of a wuss and that I've lost my edge and have walked down a few drops that I previously would have not thought about.
I suppose age does catch up to us all. :) And the older we are the longer it takes to heal...
Hope you heal up well mate and can get back out there.

Thanks Mikey. What a journey. Amaroo must have seemed a world away for a long time. Clearly Mtb is in your blood. You dont choose your passions, they kind of force themselves upon you. So whether you walk a few features or whatever - a life without your passion is ...... empty.

Hey Carl, I’m 63 and my wife Sue is 61. It’s the easy ones that get you. I’ve fractured my neck, c6 and c7. Sue fractured her pelvis. We both have many other injuries. It’s a bugger being injured. In recovery Sue would push her bike up to the letter box, lean on it until she could get her leg to rotate on the pedal. As soon as she had one rotation she was off. I was on my mtb bike after 12 weeks even though I was meant to be off for a min of 6 months. Mtber are wired differently. I hope the recovery goes well. Ribs are hard to over come. Time and patience. I will keep following your journey.

@@malmtb true Carl, at my age, I only have to worry about us. We are in a unique position and the carries a certain freedom. We are headed back to Narooma, Mogo and Eden at the end of November for two weeks. You have reminded me that getting through two weeks of riding needs to included risk management. 😁 at our age Sue and I are still pushing our limits. Sue just did the enduro line at knapsack on the mushroom farm successfully. 20 minutes later she crashed on an easy section. She went from being high to being pissed off in a split second. 😂 A broken neck made me rethink everything for about 4 weeks. At 12 weeks I was riding in Bright, Falls Creek, Beachworth, and Yackandandah. I don’t recommend it. I’ve had a fratctured c6 and 7 (high impact), concussion (no memory for 45 minutes), snapped Achilles, 4 broken ribs, right shoulder and elbow are buggered, left wrist ligament damage (permanent), double groin hernia, stomach hernia, dislocated thumb 4 times (fixed it myself last time) and over 300 stitches and 23 cuts requiring stitches and two broken fingers (snapped at right angles). Then add permanent facial paralysis from a virus 9 years ago just to complete the F me factor. I go to the gym 2-3 times a week and ride every Saturday and Sunday because Sue insists. Every annual holiday is a Mtb holiday. God, I love this sport! Get well soon and let’s go for a ride! A nice cruise, xc ride around Wylde 😁. Cheers

I tore ligaments in my shoulder pretty badly, 5 weeks ago. I still have limited range and strength in certain zones, but was allowed to start road riding this week. As frustrating and annoying as it has been, it was magic to get back on the bike! Just cruising around felt like a dream. The early days after injury are always rough, but time heals most wounds (getting old means accepting not all things will return), but that doesn’t dampen the enthusiasm or joy I get from being on a bike. Goals have moved slightly, but not the love of mtb. Whatever your journey, make it yours! My family always tells me to stop, saying I’m too old to be doing it, but that’s not me. I dislocated both shoulders after a crash that scared a few of my mates from continuing to ride , I have also broken my tibia and fibia and dislocated my ankle whilst racing motocross (41 yr old) 6 months after recovering I got straight back into it ready for the start of the next season of racing and I broke my other tibia and fibia 😂. Yep the older you get the longer it takes to heal but you will never fully heal if you don’t get back on , the trick is to not think you will be as good as you were and take it easy memories can scare you and make you make mistakes but the biggest mistake will be giving up and you will forever look back in disappointment.

All the best for the recovery, I’ve had a similar list of injuries about 4 years ago now. These days my skills outweigh my confidence, it definitely used to be the other way round. I’d rather walk anything I can see myself crashing on…..

I think my problem was just not respecting the feature. I've done several times previously and just took it all a little for granted - without warming up properly. Lesson learnt. And some coaching to improve my technique wont go astray either - just to ensure my skills outweigh my confidence. Thank you.

At age 40, I tore my Achilles at Mill Creek. I could not walk for 3 weeks, and then another 4 week of crutches. Stay positive, the first 2 weeks is the hardest, then you will be itching to get back to riding. You ride because you love to. And now you know what is the worse that could happen and you will look back at this period as being nothing.

In between - one knee reco, one elbow reco, tore all the nerves off my left foot, blew two discs in my lower back and lost the use of my right leg for a month and still can’t feel my toes. And before that - two knee reco’s torn rotor cuff, snapped bicep. And I’m getting PRP in my right knee now to keep moving. It’s not a look at me, its you are dead a long time mate and as we get older and our mates start disappearing you just say f*ck it and live life the best you can. Speedy recovery mate. I'm 4 weeks post surgery from
High speed/high impact ejection that broke my femur, 6 ribs, punctured and collapsed a lung and grade 2-3 ruptured liver.
I'm 51 and want nothing more than to be riding again...... it may look a little different post accident, but as long as I'm able to share rides with my partner and mates, have a few laughs over a frothie or two and slowly progress back to pain free life.... I'll be happy!
Not my first rodeo and have lived the risk reward of our sport for nearly 2 decades!
Push on, push hard..... the body and the mind will recover! You will ride again!!

Ok, so.. 1st, I'm so very sorry this has happened to you. Absolutely SUCKS..no question about. I pray you recover fast and perfectly and that you DO ride dirt again. For me, I've reprogrammed my brain somewhat and brought everything back to riding for fun, not for progression. That's not to say there will be no progression, it's just not the goal for me. That, for me at 50 is important. I can't afford to hurt myself, too much is at stake - BUT, I don't want to stay stagnant either. It's a fine balance - i'm happy to walk a feature or take the b line, or c line lol... I've removed that pressure on myself. I've been injured and thankfully not as bad as you by a long shot. My advise is from a personal view and that's the point isn't it? Everyone's MTB journey is different and enjoyment from MTB comes from different levels of skills - it's legit to them and that's the thing, it is legit period. Why do I ride, 4 reasons.. (in no particular order)
    1. I LOVE IT. SO much so that my secondary hobby of fishing is being ignored.
    2. For the fitness and health
    3. The mental reset - call it mental health.. whatever is it... it let's me focus on what's ahead of me on the trail, what obstacle I need to manage and all that comes from MTB - it lets me FORGET about the baggage I carry in life (we all have it, in some form or another)
    4. The friendships and comradery that comes from it - this is special and probably the most important thing.
Can I encourage you to reset you mind, understand the fear that you will now have - and rediscover the MTB feeling, manage the risk, don't feel like you need to do that "feature".. enjoy MTB for what it is. I'd be happy to be part of a recovery ride - being that I don't hit the features you all do - and build the confidence back. YOU GOT THIS. You are right, the story isn't over!!
Sorry for long comment - maybe it'll help with more views and the algorithm thing :)
Edit: Yes, I have the support of my family... it helps my youngest son rides with me as you know, and my wife is amazing - but she ALWAYS worries about us - but that'll never change, no matter what activity you do.

Thanks Rotorman. I think you hit a few nails on the head. If your listing the benefits in order I might do 1, 3, 4, 2 but all are vital reason reasons why we juggle the MTB scales of risk Vs reward.
And yes, no matter what I do, my wife will worry. It may as well be something with the benefits of MTB.
A recovery ride - sounds great! We'll make that happen.

You can still ride etc just have to make an assessment of risk vs reward. Maybe do less technical trails. Get into something different for fun but still bike related. Maybe gravel racing events or more XC stuff?, whatever etc. I'm 51 and 6yrs ago I did similar on a road bike touch of wheels ahead of me meant I pile-drived into the ground head first at 52kph. 5 months off the bike. 6months of work. 18months to get my old pre-crash fitness back. Got back into racing but then got crashed out again by a guy who hit a pot hole and lost control - so neck injury and broken collarbone. Did a few races again last season(NZ) but know that often crashes happen on the straight bit of road with good visibility. So now I'm tossing up if I continue racing as know the sensible thing is not too. Its tough though! Good luck with the recovery etc!

You know you're being selfish yet you continue to do it. I had a similar crash chasing a KOM, it was on a MTB but I was on road, full power sprint, chain skipped and I went down, about 50kmph into the ground up a hill. Shattered my collarbone into pieces and broke 4 ribs. On my honeymoon. My 6 month pregnant wife had to drive us home while I was doped up on drugs. Yeah. Anyway, I ride a lot more carefully now, and I don't do big jumps or drops. I mainly stick to XC single track. We have a new MTB park nearby but I only hit the small ramps, the big drops and jumps I just B line. It's literally not worth it. Accidents can still happen even with the riding I do now, but at least I can honestly say I wasn't being risky if it does end up in hospital. Get a smart trainer to keep your fitness up and your sanity in check, I think a big part of the appeal is the endorphins/whatever it is that you get from exercise.
